Fall Scenes at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary (Ingleside, ON - October 2017)
The Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary is located west of Cornwall, ON. It is a fascinating place to visit in any season, as you can spot a variety of bird species and other animals on its trails. However, a visit in fall allows the visitor the added bonus of seeing the leaves change colour. Dragonflies were also easy to spot during this October visit.

Winter at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary (Ingleside, ON - March 2017)
Winter returned to Eastern Ontario, just in time for my visit to the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary. For much of February, as well as the first day of March, temperatures were well above zero. In fact, there were days where the highs were in the double digits. This was not the case during my visit, as I was greeted by a frozen landscape, brisk winds and even blowing snow! In the Seaway Valley just 24 hours before, it was above 10 C. The windchill during my visit was easily in the minus teens, about 25 degrees below the previous day's high.
Visitors had to contend with yesterday's rain having frozen over, turning the trails into skating rinks in spots. Once that was conquered, there was still plenty to see at this park, west of Cornwall. The chickadees were out in full force, swooping in from all directions, hopping from spot to spot. Flocks of geese could be seen above, flying in various formations. A solitary blackbird was on a high tree branch, shaking and swaying with the strong wind gusts. However, even at the bird sanctuary, a squirrel stole the show.

Summer Scenes at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary (Ingleside, ON - July 2016)
The Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary offers many different opportunities to observe birds in their natural habitat. However, it is much more than a series of boardwalks with platforms to view our feathered friends. There is an extensive network of nature paths, where you can experience both wetlands and upland forests.
This video was shot near Ingleside, ON (west of Cornwall), in late July, 2016.

Spring Scenes at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary (Ingleside, ON - May 2017)
A large portion of the Red-Winged Trail was underwater during my visit. However, the southern boardwalk was still accessible. The flooding was caused by a beaver dam. It is very likely that along with the inconveniently-placed beaver dam, heavy rainfall and high water levels have not helped matters.
I was able to spot red-winged blackbirds and common grackles on the boardwalk. I was also able to spot one Canada Goose. Perhaps it is not surprising that I was also able to spot a beaver.

Returning to Umingmaktok
This week, we had the wonderful opportunity to visit beautiful Umingmaktok, an outpost in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. The visit was particularly emotional for our participant Pamela Gross. Pamela's family grew up in Umingmaktok and she spent part of each year there as a child, but hasn't returned since she was eight years old. Learn more about our visit in our new video.

Thousands of birds flock in China's northeast wetland
As temperatures rise, hundreds of thousands of birds, over 40 breeds, gather in the National Nature Reserve on the estuary wetland of the Yalu River in Dandong, northeast China’s Liaoning Province.
The sanctuary is the largest migration hub for birds flying from Australia and New Zealand between April and May on an annual basis. After nearly a month-long leg there, the birds will continue their journey to northern breeding grounds like Siberia and Alaska in mid-May.
Currently, the number of birds arriving in this wetland has reached its peak. They could be seen gathering in flocks and swirling in the sky in synch with the tides, or landing on the beach foraging for food. The spectacular scene has drawn large crowds of visitors and photographers to capture the beauty of nature.
