Upper Fort Garry tells its story through heritage wall
A different kind of wall has arisen in Winnipeg. More than 400 feet of steel and light, this new heritage wall marks the height, depth and location of Upper Fort Garry’s west wall, which was demolished in the 1880s.
Its layers scribe three continuous lines tracing the history of western Canada and of Upper Fort Garry. Viewing from left to right, the imagery begins with First Nations, Métis, and the fur trade. It then portrays European settlers and the events surrounding Red River’s entry into Canada. Finally, it depicts the remaking of the prairies, the building of Winnipeg, and the development of northern Manitoba.

Upper Fort Garry Alive Again After 130 Years
On October 18th, 2014 - Friends of the Fort Garry unveiled for the first time a glimpse of the provincial park that will mark the first time since the early 1880's that Upper Fort Garry was represented on the site despite being the most historically significant place in the city of Winnipeg.
Upper Fort Garry, built in 1835 and extended in the 1850's was the third fort to carry the name Garry named after Nicholas Garry. Built near the spot of the original Fort Garry (previously Fort Gibraltar) at the Fork of the Assiniboine and Red River, Upper Fort Garry brought people from far and wide to the Red River Settlement making up what we today know as Winnipeg and its many neighborhoods.
For decades, either a gas station, a parking lot or a construction zone sat on this site, an incredible disservice to the history the land held. With the historic north gateway still standing in tyndall stone it always had a lot of potential. Instead, condos were planned on the site. Friends of Upper Fort Garry pitched the money and the plan to stop the development and create a historic park, museum and educational area in part of the footprint of the Upper Fort Garry.
This land once decided the fate of Manitoba with Louis Riel taking over the Hudson Bay owned fort during the Red River Rebellion.
The Upper Fort Garry was demolished in the early 1880's to make room for Main Street so the street could be straight.
Josh Sigurdson spoke to Garry Hilderman, an architect, on the board of directors for Friends of Upper Fort Garry and an Order of Canada investiture. He told us of the nearly 40 years of work that's gone into this educational and historic development.
Josh also spoke to Jerry Gray, the chairman of the Friends of Upper Fort Garry and dean emeritus at the University of Manitoba Asper School of Business who told us about the celebration and why they opened up this long shut off site to the public early. The plan is huge and will really bring life and Metis education to a very busy part of Main Street from Broadway to Assiniboine.
Josh also caught up with mayoral candidate Robert Falcon - Ouellette who came for more personal reasons. His ancestor Joseph Ouellette fought with Louis Riel at the Upper Fort Garry.
We want to make sure to remind everyone that we are working on an in depth comprehensive documentary on the historic Upper Fort Garry due for release in 2015.
Fair use on any music accidentally recorded in the background from the celebrations. We do not make money from our video reports.

Upper Fort Garry 2015
In the fall of 1869, 400 Metis rode through this gate, took control, and began a process which saw Manitoba come into Confederation under Metis terms.
Engaging with Upper Fort Garry- Education Webinar
In this webinar Matt Henderson uses Upper Fort Garry to discuss historic sites in the classroom. Upper Fort Garry is arguably one of the most historically significant buildings and intersections of activity for the fur trade, the development of democracy, and for Confederation itself. It served as the headquarters of the HBC, the first offices of the Provisional Government, and the site of one of the most controversial executions in Canadian history. Now, all that is left is one wall, but through the efforts of many Winnpeggers, Upper Fort Garry is reborn and serves as an urban provincial park and state-of-the-art historical installation. Matt Henderson will walk you through this impressive site and provide ways for engaging your learners through transformative and rigorous experiences.

Lower Fort Garry HBC Fur Trading Post at Dusk Urban Exploration #44
One of Canada's National Historic sites Lower Fort Garry situated 20 miles north of Winnipeg Manitoba. This was a Hudson Bay Fur Trading Post built in 1830 to replace Upper Fort Garry 20 miles down the river which is right in the center of the City of Winnipeg now. And which flooded in 1826. Beaver Pelts were very highly prized for the making of Beaver Hats. And this Post acted as a Store and Supply Depot. The Treaty 1 for the safe settlement of the Prairies, with the Ojibway and the Cree, was signed here at Lower Fort Garry in 1871. In the Summer time, they do a lot of interpretive programs for visitors. That gives the true feel of how it would have been like, back then. Be sure to hit the bell button to be sure to get notifications when I upload or go Live.
