Bhojtal, formerly known as Upper Lake,is a large lake which lies on the western side of the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal.
It is a major source of drinking water for the residents of the city, serving around 40% of the residents.
Bada talaab, along with the nearby Chhota Talaab, constitute Bhoj Wetland, which is now a Ramsar site.
The lake was known as the Upper Lake or Bada Talab (Big Pond) until March 2011 it was renamed to Bhojtaal
in honour of the Great King Raja Bhoj who built it.
A huge statue of Raja Bhoj, standing with sword, was also installed on a pillar on one corner of the lake
to cement the name of Bhopal as the city of lakes.
Bhojtal is situated on the west central part of Bhopal city and is surrounded by Van Vihar National Park on the south,
human settlements on the east and north, and agriculture fields on the west.
A trip to the ‘City of Lakes’ is incomplete without a boating session in the pristine clear waters of Upper Lake.
The M P Tourism Boat Club is the perfect getaway for your family to spend some quality time amidst nature.
Open for the whole week, it is easily accessible from the various landmarks of Bhopal.
This getaway provides pedal boats, motorboat rides, parasailing and even jet skiing.
The rides are very cost efficient and can be embarked on with your whole family.
With a plethora of rides and activities available, the club will keep you captivated and busy during your visit.

Bhojtal ( Upper Lake ) also called Bada Talab is a prime sightseeing attraction of Bhopal. The large lake - front is ideal for taking a stroll and watch the speed boats carrying tourist cruising rapidly on placid water. In afternoon one can see colorful sailboats gliding smoothly on lake water. Tourists with more time at their disposal hire paddle boats and move on the lake at their own leisurely pace. In the evening the motor-launch looking like a mini-ship carry a lot of passengers in its upper deck for a cruise with fun, frolic and music. The snow white swans are not shy to come on the shore for the food - the tourist may offer. There is a model of mini-railway station named as 'Bhojtal Junction' with a locomotive in display. The large model of ship 'Shivalik' in glass case serves as a backdrop for tourists taking memory picture shoots.
Critical Days of Upper lake of Bhopal
A beautiful water body of the 11th century, Upper Lake is the oldest man-made lake in India. Locally called as Bada Talab, it is a massive earthen bund constructed across the Kolans River. Legend says that King Bhoj constructed this gigantic lake, which is believed to have cured his skin disease.
A massive lake with a catchment area of 36.1 sq km, the Upper Lake happens to be the major source of potable water for the people of Bhopal. An attractive royal garden called Kamla Park in the vicinity makes the surroundings more scenic. A favourite spot of the water enthusiasts, this lake is the hub of all water sport activities in Bhopal.

Bhopal is the capital city of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and the administrative headquarters of Bhopal district and Bhopal division. The city was the capital of the former Bhopal State. Bhopal is known as the City of Lakes for its various natural as well as artificial lakes and is also one of the greenest cities in India. It is the 17th largest city in the country and 131st in the world.
A Y-class city, Bhopal houses various educational and research institutions and installations of national importance, including ISRO's Master Control Facility, BHEL, and AMPRI. Bhopal is home to the largest number of Institutes of National Importance in India, namely IISER, MANIT, SPA, AIIMS, NLIU and IIIT.
There are many places of interest in and around Bhopal. Bhimbetka Caves are about 35 kilometres from Bhopal city. They have evidence of dwellings of pre-historic man during the Paleolithic era. Rock paintings in the caves are specimens of pre-historic settlements in India. There are about 600 caves, but only 12 are open for visitors. The caves are located in the midst of sal and teak forests. They were discovered by Wakankar in 1957. UNESCO declared Bhimbetka Caves as a World Heritage Site in 2003. The Museum of Mankind in Bhopal exhibits tribal and folk houses from all corners of India. The 2 lakes (the big lake and the small lake) attract tourists from all over India.
