Egyptology - Pyramid Construction
Subscribe to Naked Science –
The Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu, is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact. Its sides climb at an angle of slightly less than 52 degrees, rising to a summit of 480 feet. But how did they manage to manoeuvre 2.5 tonne blocks to such an incredible height without the crane or the block and tackle system? It was a challenge to the ancient Egyptians and still remains a mystery to modern archaeologists.

The Great Pyramid was conceived as a tomb for Khufu whom you may probably know as Cheops. It remained the tallest structure created by human hand in the whole world for more than 3,800 years! Btw, it’s hard to believe, but in ancient times the crypt was mesmerizingly white...
???? And guys, you probably know that Ancient Egyptians held cats in the highest esteem. So we hid one at the beginning of the video! Try to spot it! ????

SUMMARY:
- It was only in the 27th century BCE when the concept of a pyramid with smooth and evenly tilted sides that we all know today was introduced.
- Originally it rose about 480 feet above the ground, while the sides of its base were over 750 feet long.
- It was comprised of about 2.3 million blocks of stone, and each of them had an average heft of over 2 tons.
- The main stuff used during the construction was different types of limestone. The exterior covering that you can see these days was built up from dark limestone.
- These long rows of craggy slabs that resemble stepped pyramids rather than the usual ones were actually the inner coating or the core.
- The pyramid was lined with sparkling white limestone. That’s what initially formed the outer layer of the pyramid.
- In 1303 CE a major earthquake hit Crete. Cairo was affected as well, and the Great Pyramid met a similar fate.
- For hundreds of years, the ancient monument was wearing away in the wind and the sun. In the 19th century, the remaining pieces of limestone that once covered it were seized once again.
- Many adventurers who explored the site later stumbled upon the big stacks of strange debris at the foot of the pyramid.
- One of the mysteries of the Great pyramid was the way the precious materials got to Giza in the first place.
- The fine white stones that were really valued came from far away. They were extracted at Tura which was located on the opposite bank of the Nile, about 8 miles from the necropolis.
- It’s likely the workers used to put the stones on the wooden sleds to move them closer to the construction site.
- The people who worked on the pyramid’s construction were, despite the popular belief, skilled and well-paid employees.

The Pyramids of Egypt - How and Why - Naked Science Documentary (Full)
...Built during a time when Egypt was one of the richest and most powerful civilizations in the world, the pyramids—especially the Great Pyramids of Giza—are some of the most magnificent man-made structures in history. Their massive scale reflects the unique role that the pharaoh, or king, played in ancient Egyptian society. Though pyramids were built from the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the close of the Ptolemaic period in the fourth century A.D., the peak of pyramid building began with the late third dynasty and continued until roughly the sixth (c. 2325 B.C.). More than 4,000 years later, the Egyptian pyramids still retain much of their majesty, providing a glimpse into the country’s rich and glorious past.
During the third and fourth dynasties of the Old Kingdom, Egypt enjoyed tremendous economic prosperity and stability. Kings held a unique position in Egyptian society. Somewhere in between human and divine, they were believed to have been chosen by the gods to serve as mediators between them and the people on earth. Because of this, it was in everyone’s interest to keep the king’s majesty intact even after his death, when he was believed to become Osiris, god of the dead. The new pharaoh, in turn, became Horus, the falcon-god who served as protector of the sun-god, Ra.
The pyramid's smooth, angled sides symbolized the rays of the sun and were designed to help the king's soul ascend to heaven and join the gods, particularly the sun god Ra.
Ancient Egyptians believed that when the king died, part of his spirit (known as “ka”) remained with his body. To properly care for his spirit, the corpse was mummified, and everything the king would need in the afterlife was buried with him, including gold vessels, food, furniture and other offerings. The pyramids became the focus of a cult of the dead king that was supposed to continue well after his death. Their riches would provide not only for him, but also for the relatives, officials and priests who were buried near him.
No pyramids are more celebrated than the Great Pyramids of Giza, located on a plateau on the west bank of the Nile River, on the outskirts of modern-day Cairo. The oldest and largest of the three pyramids at Giza, known as the Great Pyramid, is the only surviving structure out of the famed seven wonders of the ancient world. It was built for Khufu (Cheops, in Greek), Sneferu’s successor and the second of the eight kings of the fourth dynasty. Though Khufu reigned for 23 years (2589-2566 B.C.), relatively little is known of his reign beyond the grandeur of his pyramid. The sides of the pyramid’s base average 755.75 feet (230 meters), and its original height was 481.4 feet (147 meters), making it the largest pyramid in the world. Three small pyramids built for Khufu’s queens are lined up next to the Great Pyramid, and a tomb was found nearby containing the empty sarcophagus of his mother, Queen Hetepheres. Like other pyramids, Khufu’s is surrounded by rows of mastabas, where relatives or officials of the king were buried to accompany and support him in the afterlife.

MYSTERIES Inside the Pyramids
No other monument has created so much intrigue other that these feats of engineering that we still couldn’t reproduce to this day. These pyramids displays nearly perfect symmetry and were constructed around 2560 BC, taking an estimated 20 years to finish. It stands as a symbol to the mysteries of ancient man and remained the tallest building in the world until the Lincoln cathedral was constructed in 1311.

5. Chambers of the Pyramids
The pyramids are not just like lego structures with blocks stacked up on top of eachother. There are chambers, air shafts, the king’s chamber, queens chamber, various other passageways and even a subterranean chamber. The granite stones in the King’s Chamber in the Great pyramid weigh up to 80 tons, and were somehow transported over 500 miles, without the help of the wheel or metal tools. However one of the biggest mysteries about the pyramids is what’s known as the big void which is basically like a large empty cavity above the grand gallery. Since it’s not easy to access, no one knows exactly what’s inside. Japanese and French scientists confirmed its existence by using various methods including radiography, gas detectors, and nuclear emulsion films. Some theorize it was just a gap that helped reduce the amount of resources needed for construction, while others believe it could contain answers that we’ve been looking for.
4. Visible From Moon?
Back during the time where in their peak condition it would have been a mesmerizing site to see and it’s possible that you could have even seen it if you were on the moon. All of the limestone would have polished and reflected the sun’s light, making it visible from outer space. It would have also had a smoother and flatter appearance than it does now after centuries of erosion and being used as a source of stone for building materials. It lost it’s mirror like qualities sometime around 1300 BC when an earthquake hit the area. This caused much of the outer polished stones to loosen and later be used for mosques and fortresses. What we see today is only the inner shell which definitely wasn’t polished. Could the reflections have helped extraterrestrial life become attracted to the ancient land of egypt, allowing them to become an advanced civilization? Who knows…
3. The Pyramids Vessel
Archaeologists discovered a rare funerary boat near the Abusir Pyramids, located just south of Cairo. Since the Nile gave ancient Egypt many of their resources, boats played a vital role for transportation and fishing to the civilization. With egyptians taking their burial ceremonies quite seriously, there’s no doubt that’d they want to bring a boat with them to the afterlife. The discovery of the 4500 year old ship most likely belonged to an upper class citizen since timber wasn’t always that easy to get in the desert at this time. The archaeologists were clearing an ancient mastaba, or tombs, and found parts of the 60 foot ship lying in the bed of stones. This could be key in further understanding the Egyptians ship building techniques as well as funerary traditions.
2. We’re the Pyramids a Power Plant?
Could the real reasons the pyramids were built be hidden in history so we don’t revert unlimited energy sources? Could corporations or elite families be suppressing a cheap way to gather power so that we have to rely on their sources of energy? Would thousands workers spend years building a massive tomb, or could there be some other reason they don’t want us to know about. Recent studies have shown that the great pyramid in giza have shown that the internal chambers are actually capable of concentrating electromagnetic energy under the base. Tesla often felt as though this was a possibly theory and took this consideration when he conducted his own work. The top of pyramid is also missing a capstone which some feel as though is necessary for tapping into the cosmic powers of the building. People are banned from climbing to the top but a man named siemens claimed to have notices a mysterious electrical power while being there.

The first monks came here the end of the third, the beginning of the fourth century. They came here because this was a harsh desert. It provided them with the silence and the austerity that they were looking for to devote their lives to prayer and fasting. But this is also the place where God appeared to Moses, first at the bush that burned without being consumed, and then at the peak of Sinai where God gave Moses the ten commandments.

The monastery has never been destroyed and never been abandoned in all of its history, and through the years many manuscripts were written here, many manuscripts were brought here. The community has been predominantly Greek throughout its history, but it is also been the goal of pilgrims from all over the world and that is reflected in the library. We have manuscripts in eleven different languages. The five largest categories are Greek, Arabic, Syriac, Georgian, and Slavonic. No other monastery library has manuscripts in so many different languages.
