Santiago, Chile: Atacama Desert to Upscale Providencia
It's an easy 1:50 flight from Calama back to Santiago, Chile, leaving the fantastic Atacama Desert behind. Back in Santiago, we haggled with taxi drivers waiting inside the domestic terminal for a ride to new hotel in Providencia area. Either make a deal or walk outside to the Official Taxi Line for a metered fare into the city.
I like to mix up areas and selected Casa de Todos B&B Boutique Hotel in upscale Providencia for a three night stay before flying on to Easter Island. Casa de Todos is nicely situated and also within walking distance to the Bellavista neighborhood with many more restaurants and hotels.
Discover all that Chile has to offer!
The world's longest and thinnest country, measuring over 4300km (2700 miles) from north to south and only 240km (150 miles) from east to west, Chile is a land of beautiful contrasts. In the north lies the driest desert in the world; in the south, immense glaciers crawl slowly over the wind-swept Patagonian terrain; and in between, volcanoes, lakes, mountains, rivers, valleys, and forests prove that the world's most unique and breathtaking geography is Chilean. Adventure, great food, and excellent wine abound, and the warm and hospitable people are eager to welcome travelers into their homeland and into their hearts.
With Santiago Adventures, you are guaranteed an authentic, personal, and extraordinary experience from start to finish. Santiago Chile 2019 Travel Guide. Inc Valparisio and Andes
We spent 9 nights in Santiago and have included the musts in this video. Let us know if you have any questions. Enjoy!
And pick Valparisio over Vina Del Mar if you're choosing. Vina Del Mar is nicer and more upscale but just like any other beach town. Valpo is unlike anything else!
Atacama Desert, Chile: Flora, Fauna and Hot Springs
The Atacama Desert may look barren and desolate but there was always something to see with a good guide like Alex. Llamas, Alpaca, wild and endangered Vicunas, and even a Vizccacha (a cross between a bunny, squirrel and kangaroo).
Puritama Hot Springs was on today's itinerary, owned and operated by Explora, a corporation who operates exclusive lodges in remote areas around the world, e.g., a double room for (3) nights costs $4,000 but does include meals and tours; I did say exclusive. Don't bother visiting their Hot Springs. For $30 US a person, there are more interesting ways to waste money than soaking in tepid water.
Atacama Desert, Chile: Charming Little Town of San Pedro de Atacama
Would you believe (yes you would) that I completely forgot to upload one of the most important Atacama Desert Videos, all about San Pedro? Duh...
That's what happens when one comes home with over seven hours of video to put in order, edit and upload. Unfortunately, I had to reimport all the clips, reformat, yadda-yadda and was unable to smooth out the bumpy parts and edit the way I would have preferred, On a positive note though, the video does show restaurants, tour operators, hotels, hostels, etc.
Hope you enjoy San Pedro as much as we did.

Chile's central regions offer culture, diversity and unforgettable memories
The central regions of Chile consist of coastline, the booming capital of Santiago and the ever famous Chilean wine country.
Chile's breathtaking coastline offers spectacular views of crashing waves, jagged landscapes, and smooth white sand beaches. Anchored by the affluent resort city Viña del Mar and the historic port of Valparaiso -- declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architectural and cultural importance -- a number of charming beach towns spread to the north and south. One must-see is Isla Negra, where Pablo Neruda's former home looks out to sea and provides a snapshot into the life and mind of Chile's most beloved poet. All along the coast, elegant homes and hotels are nestled into the hills, and a number of excellent restaurants serve some of the best seafood you'll ever taste.
Chosen by the New York Times as 2011's #1 destination to visit, Santiago is a dynamic and contemporary metropolis located in the heart of Chile's fertile central valley. Chile's capital is a vibrant city full of character, with a thriving arts culture, trendy restaurant scene, and lively nightlife. Embraced on all sides by mountains -- the mighty Andes to the east and the smaller coastal range to the west -- on a clear day Santiago boasts one of the most incredible city views in the world. With world-class skiing, wine tours, biking, and trekking right its doorstep, Santiago is a city full of exhilarating possibilities.
Chile is an agricultural paradise whose bounty of fruits and vegetables supplies the world's marketplaces and whose wine graces tables on every continent. A Mediterranean climate and increasingly organic, sustainable farming practices combine to create high-quality wines which are the purest expression of their privileged terroir.
Santiago Adventures is Chile's premier wine tour company offering the most comprehensive selection of wine tours of any Chilean tour operator. With expert guides, local in-depth knowledge, and personal contacts in over 100 Chilean wineries, we ensure that your custom itinerary will exceed expectations, whether you are new to wine, a life-long enthusiast, or a representative from a wine society, gourmet club or professional organization.

Tour Santiago, Chile Like a Local: Visit Lively Markets
Santiago is filled with markets and we visited four different ones with guide Christian in just one day. If you exit the Metro at Patronato and walk to the right out of the station, you'll be right in the center of the Textile Market; this is where to go for cheap anything. Walk to the left and you'll see the Mercado Vega Centrale with five different food and flower markets.
If all that isn't enough, visit the weekend Bio Bio Flea Market in Barrio Franklin but watch your belongings and take care. A salesman warned Christian in Spanish that someone was following us. Over 20 blocks of stuff along sidewalks and inside buildings is available including stolen and pirated merchandise. Still lots more to do in Santiago? You bet!

Atacama Desert, Chile: Tiny Towns of Socaire and Toconao
Socaire and Toconao are little stops along the daily tours through the Atacama Desert of Chile. Socaire has a restored church built of volcanic rock and views of traditionally terraced land for agriculture.
While Toconao is known for its construction in Liparita, a white volcanic stone quarried nearby. Houses and this Eighteenth Century Bell tower are also built of this stone. Its local church is cared for by nuns who give liturgies. We really enjoyed the charming Christmas manger which took up half the church, had traditional decorations of cacti and a tiny lagoon with flamingos.
I'll keep repeating for those viewers who are not watching all the Atacama videos; the Atacama Desert is the highest, driest in the world and the annual amount of rain wouldn't even fill a tea cup!
Chile: from lakes, to rivers, to volcanoes!
Heading south through string-bean Chile, the colors become increasingly vibrant. Deep blue lakes, stark white snow-capped volcanoes, and lush green Araucaria forests compose a spectacular landscape. A stronghold of the native Mapuche people and home to thousands of colonial German immigrants, the Lakes District is an area rich in culture -- festivals, artisan craft, and traditional food. Chilean hospitality is at its absolute finest here, and the pace of life is slower than in Santiago, making the area a popular destination for city-dwellers looking for a relaxing vacation. But don't get too comfortable; the Lake District has some of the best outdoor activities in Chile. From trekking to rafting, climbing to biking, soaking in hot springs to scaling active volcanoes, there is no shortage of exhilarating adventures to be had.

Chile! A land full of diverse beauty
Chile is a land of diversity and contrasts. Its geography distinguishes it from other destinations. It's a tri-continental country, possessing territories in America, Antartica, and Oceania. Its territory runs 4,300 kilometers along a narrow strip between the Andes Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean. It also offers a wonderfully varied mix of landscapes and climates that range from natural wonders like the most arid desert in the world, to glaciers and straits in the Pacific Ocean. There are few experiences as rewarding as admiring gigantic masses of ice, or contemplating one of the clearest skies on the Planet.

Tour Santiago, Chile Like a Local: San Cristobal Hill
We finished up our Santiago Like a Local tour by taking the Metro back to Baquedano, tucking into what was supposed to be the best ice cream in Santiago (which we give a -10 rating and was very expensive) before walking through Barrio Bellavista. I will be uploading a separate video about Bellavista later in this series.
The walk led to the funicular up to the top of San Cristobal Hill and its park. There are good but smoggy views of this huge city from the top. Admission to the park is free except for the funicular but visitors can also walk or bike up to the top. Completely exhausted by now, Marine and I couldn't put one foot in front of the other and taxi'd back to Holiday Inn Express. What a great day!
Chile's World Renowned Patagonia!
Chile's Southern Patagonia is considered by many to be the final frontier of the New World. Vast pampas dotted with the occasional estancia (farm) and trees deformed by the fierce Patagonian wind form an isolated landscape. In the magnificent Torres del Paine National Park, travelers along the winding trails get up-close-and-personal with dramatic mountain formations, vibrant forests, turquoise lakes, jagged glaciers, and roaring rivers -- some of the last truly unspoiled nature on the planet.

Subway station blast from possible fire extinguisher bomb injures lunchgoers in Santiago, Chile
An explosion went off at the Escuela Militar metro station in the upscale Las Condes area of Santiago, Chile on Monday. At least seven people were injured by flying debris and fragments.
Mario Rozas, head of police communications, said the explosion went off at a mini-mall by the subway station at around 2:00 p.m. local time.
Security cameras showed two suspects planted a device in a metal container, possibly a trash can, outside the fast-food restaurant and escaped in a car, according to Interior Minister Mahmud Aleuy.
Local health officials said one woman had at least one of her fingers amputated while others suffered hearing losses, but none of the injuries were fatal.
No group has stepped forward to claim responsibility for the blast, but there have been several attacks by anarchist groups in recent years, Reuters reports.
“This is a cowardly act because it has as its objective to hurt people, create fear and even kill innocent people, Reuters reported President Michelle Bachelet as saying.
We're going to use all the weight of the law, including the anti-terrorist law, because those responsible for these acts have to pay, she said.
