Living the Russian Stereotype ????
In this episode, we visit Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg on the Trans Siberian Railway.
Most of this Russia travel vlog is spent in the Ural Mountains, the barrier between Western Russia, and Siberia. We join with TOCHKA 4x4 a local adventure group for some serious off roading.
While we realize that happened next is not an accurate depiction of everyday Russia, we were surprised with some traditional music, and guns. We were offered the opportunity my birthday by firing off a few rounds in the forest, we had never done this before. Though, I admit we wanted to. This small part of Russian culture is definitely the Russian stereotype, and it was a lot of fun to join the locals celebrating this way for a night.
Next we met a group of pagans living simply in the forest. Here, we helped them create trinkets with molten metal, another first for me.
Lastly we were invited to dinner at the house of a Russian Oligarch (Who had a tank in his front yard), and drank vodka while being served some incredible Russian Food.
A bit of a background story. This is a train journey of 10,000 km across Russia, the biggest country in the world. 25 days to visit Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Ulan-Ude, and Vladivostok.

Колыма - родина нашего страха / Kolyma - Birthplace of Our Fear

Spring 1941. Richard Sorge, a Soviet secret agent, codename. Ramsay, is working undercover in Tokyo masquerading as a German journalist. When he finds out from Eugen Ott, the German Ambassador to Japan, that Hitler has decided to invade the USSR, Sorge immediately sends a report to Moscow warning of the threat of danger, although the exact date of the invasion is still unknown. Unfortunately, Sorge is not well respected by his superiors and as a result, Moscow treats his information as unreliable. But Sorge persists and, going against protocol, continues to send one message after another. As a result, he is eventually spotted by Japan’s secret service commanded by Colonel Osaki, who has been looking for the Soviet agent for a long time. As war against the Soviet Union breaks out, Moscow revises its attitude towards Sorge and reinstates him as the top agent in the Soviet Foreign Intelligence, where he is set the task of finding out whether Japan will take military action against the USSR and, if so, when…

Nuclear Crisis: How America Lost Post-Soviet Russia | Stephen Cohen
In this week’s episode of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Stephen Cohen, professor emeritus of Politics at Princeton University and of Russian Studies and History at NYU. Dr. Cohen has received several scholarly honors over his lengthy career, including two Guggenheim fellowships and a National Book Award nomination, and was, for many years, a consultant and on-air commentator on Russian affairs for CBS News. Former CBS evening news anchor Dan Rather has referred to Stephen Cohen as “one of, if not the premier expert on the old Soviet Union, Russia, and Russian history in al of what we call Western civilization.”
We live in dangerous times, not only in international relations but also in domestic affairs. Russian fear-mongering and gratuitous insults leveled at Russian President, Vladimir Putin serve as powerful political litmus tests in contemporary America. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, a presidential candidate for the Democratic party, was recently accused by former Secretary of State and two-time presidential candidate Hillary Clinton of being a “Russian Asset.” Meanwhile, Donald Trump is consistently chided for what his critics assert is “the conspicuous absence of any criticism of Vladimir Putin.”
In the years since Russia’s occupation and annexation of Crimea, Stephen Cohen has become, in the words of one writer, “the most controversial Russia expert in America.” He’s been openly critical of NATO expansion since the idea was first proposed in the early-to-mid 90’s, and though this criticism puts him in good company, his views on Ukraine and what he sees as America’s role in inciting Russian aggression have left him marginalized and often times disparaged as a “Russian apologist.”
Nonetheless, it is Stephen Cohen’s contention that American is now dangerously close to “War with Russia,” the title that he has chosen for his most recent book, which consists of a series of commentaries on current affairs originally published at The Nation Magazine. He views American foreign policy towards the post-Soviet Union as not only needlessly antagonistic but recklessly endangering of American national security, putting us at the greatest risk of nuclear war since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

LENINGRAD 1991 - The Last Soviet Winter - ROGER GEORGE CLARK photos
In Feb 1991 the English photographer and broadcaster ROGER GEORGE CLARK spent a week in snowbound Leningrad.
'It was the last Soviet winter,' he says. 'In September the city changed its name back to St Petersburg and at the end of the year the Soviet Union ceased to exist. That last winter the city looked beautiful under its coating of snow. Outside the Kazan cathedral film extras gathered for a period movie along with conscripts dressed in tsarist uniforms.
'Another intriguing sight was the snow-covered Cathedral of the Transfiguration. 102 Bronze cannon, captured during the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829, ring the building. As a child the poet and essayist Joseph Brodsky used to swing on the cast-iron chains linking these upside-down guns.
'I had the good fortune to photograph the Leningrad Philharmonic orchestra rehearsing. A sign of the times - they were playing Sibelius, whose Finnish nationalist music incurred Russia's suspicions even in tsarist times, let alone Soviet. Now they were playing Finlandia and Sibelius's Violin Concerto. Serge Kalagin conducted while Maxim Fedotov played the violin.
'Another sign of the times - a huge demonstration in Palace Square supporting the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. A few months before Hussein had invaded and looted Kuwait, sparking the first Gulf War. Many Russians were annoyed because the West had attacked and were freeing Kuwait. Here in Leningrad demonstrators appeared with large portraits of the dictator and posters accusing President Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev of supporting Zionism. The war aroused strong anti-Semitic sentiments, scuffles broke out in the crowd and the police hustled protesters away.
'The statue in silhouette depicts that sinister Communist revolutionary Felix Dzerzhinsky. He is better known by his nickname Iron Felix, or Bloody Felix. It was Dzerzhinsky who set up the Soviet State Security forces under their original name of the Cheka, later the KGB. Dzerzhinsky was Lenin's Himmler. The Cheka became notorious for torture and mass executions, especially during the Red Terror and Russian Civil War. This statue was torn down after Communism fell.
'Meanwhile, Leningrad's children played happily in the snow. As you can see those I photographed were well wrapped up to keep out the cold. Some looked surprisingly fashionable, as if dressed in designer clothes. In 1991, when the Soviets were still in power? Yes, I'm surprised, too, as I look at these photos now. The Soviets had a reputation for appalling clothes. But many parents took care of their children. Some of my pictures look as if they were taken for a Western fashion catalogue, but I assure these were just ordinary children I encountered while walking round the city.
'In addition you can see the fabulous Catherine Palace at Tsarskoe Selo under snow and the Cameron Gallery, plus the house where Anna Vyrubova lived. She was a confidant of the last empress and - fatally - introduced the royal family to Rasputin. Nicholas II and his family often met the mad monk in Anna's house, as well as the nearby Alexander Palace.
'The neo-gothic house is also something special - a miniature tsarist palace. The Cottage Palace, as it's called, can be found in the Peterhof Park. It was designed - like the Cameron Gallery - by a Scottish architect for Tsar Nicholas I.
'Down by the shore I discovered the snow-covered ruins of the Lower Palace - a favourite summer retreat of Nicholas II. Historic events happened here. In his study in the Lower Palace Nicholas II signed the 1905 October Manifesto granting a Duma (parliament) and civil liberties. And in 1914 he signed the order mobilising the Russian armies - a decision that plunged Europe into WWI and wrecked Russia. In 1917 the country collapsed and Lenin and the Bolsheviks seized power. The Lower Palace was destroyed by the Germans in WWII.
'I've reproduced some of these winter photos in earlier Leningrad/St Petersburg videos, but I thought I would put all the best winter shots in one video as I discovered I'd taken more snow photos than I thought I had. You may also be interested in my You/Tube videos - Soviet Sailors in Leningrad and Kronstadt - the Soviet Naval Base.'
