Great Photography Session w/ Michael
UK Vlog 25 - October 14, 2016
*MORE INFO BELOW*
I met up with one of my favorite photographers on Instagram - Michael Olatunji. We had some coffee & talked about our background, camera gear, photography, life experiences, goals, aspirations, and also came up with some cool ideas for future work together.
We went around Newcastle where he showed me some cool spots for photography. We climbed up on a couple of rooftops for that sick vantage point, went to Leazes Park, and a couple of other stops along the way. The Autumn colors are starting to pop, which is pretty cool for pictures.
He took a lot of pictures of me along the way and it was cool that we were both documenting each other in video form & in photo. This might be my favorite vlog to date.

Weep, Geordie, Weep, at The Murder of Your City
#newcastle #local #history
Discussion on the new plans for the Blue House Roundabout - See
**
The poem - Weep, Geordie, weep, At the murder of your city; Weep, Geordie, weep, For the vandals have no pity is from Alas Smith and Burns? Conservation in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre 1959–68 by J. Pendlebury , University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne
The text from the article ... Modernist planning was at its zenith in Britain during the 1960s, after post-war austerity had passed and before disillusion and reaction set in towards the end of the decade and in the 1970s. It is a time often now associated with ‘clean sweep’ planning, where the only constraints on redevelopment were economic and conservation policy was restricted to the preservation of a limited number of major buildings and monuments. This article considers the re-planning of Newcastle city centre in the period when planning in the city was led by T. Dan Smith and Wilfred Burns, from Smith assuming political control in 1959 to Burns leaving in 1968. It demonstrates that, though modernist rationalism was the driving force in the city’s re-planning, it co-existed with a conscious policy of conservation, born out of a picturesque design tradition.
Introduction: The 1960s is an extraordinary period in the history of town planning. In many British cities it is the period when post-war redevelopment was in full swing. Planners were the key urban professionals directing the form of the built environment. It was the high watermark of modernist planning; by the end of the decade the writing was on the wall.
In no city was there more evangelical zeal for the benefits of town planning than Newcastle upon Tyne. T. Dan Smith, elected as Leader of the City Council in 1959, created one of the country’s first free-standing Planning Departments.
**
T. Dan Smith was a British politician who was Leader of Newcastle City Council from 1960 to 1965. He was a prominent figure in the Labour Party in North East England, such that he was nicknamed Mr Newcastle.
Smith sought to clear Newcastle of slum housing and put a great deal of effort into regeneration plans, suggesting that the city should become The Brasilia of the North. He also supported the expansion of higher education in Newcastle and funded local arts institutions. Among the developments Smith's council participated in were the Eldon Square Shopping Centre, Newcastle Civic Centre and Swan House. The latter led to the demolition of John Dobson's Royal Arcade, though Smith's council had planned to rebuild it nearby. Smith's legacy became associated with the destruction of historic buildings in favour of unpopular concrete structures, though the key developments happened partly under other council leaders.
Smith was enthusiastic about town planning and the arts as means of improving the quality of life. He believed strongly in improving Newcastle's housing stock and put a great deal of effort into regeneration plans developed by his chief planning officer Wilfred Burns, suggesting that the city be nicknamed The Brasilia of the North. Smith's council also began the planning for Eldon Square Shopping Centre, which would be completed in 1977, on plans drawn up in 1972, by Taylor Chapman and Partners. Other projects he supported included cleaning up the River Tyne and the expansion of Newcastle International Airport, which was completed in 1967.
Redevelopment was concentrated in the eastern part of the city centre, which had until then been occupied by 18th and 19th century housing. Buildings were built primarily with brutalist architecture and the streetscape design favoured a strong segregation between traffic and pedestrians. The plans also favoured the preservation of the historic core around Grey Street. Though it continued under subsequent councils, the development was left substantially incomplete.
Jeremy Beecham, a later leader of Newcastle City Council, argued that the corruption scandal had overshadowed the positive aspects of Smith's legacy. He praised Smith's charisma, vision, role in creating Eldon Square Shopping Centre and reforms to the local government, though he believed Smith made mistakes with his conduct and the demolition of certain historic buildings. The loss of John Dobson's Royal Arcade in 1963-64 became particularly symbolic, as well as Old Eldon Square. Owen Hatherley writes that in addition to being overly car-centred, The problem with the idea of the Brasilia of the North is that Newcastle never found a northern Oscar Niemeyer. John Shipley, another council leader, said that his plan to turn Newcastle into the Brasilia of the North was way over the top. Newcastle has a long and proud history and we have to build on that – not just ignore it and look for the next big thing.

Ghost hunting in The Victoria Tunnel - Newcastle
An underground tunnel originally built to transport coal under Newcastle, the Victoria Tunnel was later converted into an air raid shelter during the second world war, and in that time, it has seen it's fair share of tragedy and drama.
In 2018, a tour guide claimed to have seen the figure of a man while he was showing members of the public the inside of the tunnel. That, and along with strange footsteps, voices, bangs and growls, this tunnel is said to be one of the most actively haunted locations in Newcastle.
