Urban Hiking in Buenos Aires: a Tour of the Best Sights
Happy New Year from Buenos Aires, where it’s a hot summer! As I prepare for my Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike later this year, I’m doing a lot of walking and running. Today I took a long walk through the streets of Buenos Aires and took some video of what I saw.
From here on the trip, it’s onto Ushuaia in Patagonia. But today I’m still on flat land. Sights and neighborhoods include Recoleta, Recoleta Cemetery, the French Embassy, Plaza San Martín, Puerto Madero, la Casa Rosada, Congress, Abasto Mall, Palermo, Plaza Serrano, the MALBA museum of Latin American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Law School of the University of Buenos Aires.
The blog post I did nine years ago about traveling to and living in Buenos Aires is here: (It’s a Typepad site and completely trustworthy, no matter what “warning” you might get from YouTube when you click on the link.)

Today we joined a 'free' walking tour of Buenos Aires. The company was and we did the 'Recoleta Tour.' It was really interesting to hear about the history of Buenos Aires and see some of the historical buildings around the city! You don't need to book, just show up at the meeting place! It runs every day at 10.30am and finishes at the Recoleta Cemetery, which was perfect as this was on our list of things to see in Buenos Aires!
We saw on TripAdvisor the average tip was 100 pesos - we gave 200 pesos between us which works out to be about $20NZD, well worth it in our opinion!

--- Top 10 Things to do in Buenos Aires, Argentina ---
1) free walking tour (innercity & main sights)
I discovered Demasiado tours through Couchsurfing and recommendations from friends I met at different CouchSurfing meetings in Buenos Aires.
more info: Demasiado Tours, (
2) Recoleta neighborhood & cemetery
This barrio is one of the fancy onces, close to the city center -- great architecture, nice parks and one of the most popular cemeteries in town with impressive graves of notable people like Evita. I did a free tour here as well to get a quick overview before walking around on my own.

3) Buenos Aires Street Art Tours
Matt became a good friend of mine and runs unique graffiti toursfollow providing loads of information about the murals, the artists and the Street Art Scene in general -- a great way for people who are new to Street Art to dive into this interesting culture!

4) Ice Cream, Helado, Gelato -- mmmh!
The amount of people who immigrated from Italy to Buenos Aires and Argentina in general is very high -- therefore you can find loads of great Ice Cream Parlours here. Beside the big chains like Freddo you should go for some family owned businesses -- ask the locals as they know best where to go!
more info: Top 5 Ice Cream Parlours (#4):
5) Discover Buenos Aires by Bike
Time to do something active: grab a bike and cycle around the city (like I did in Berlin)! Since 2 years the city provides a decent network of bicycle routes & most of the hostels offer a bike rental service. This is a great way to get to know Puerto Madero as there is no Subte (Metro) station close to it.

6) Parks
After all these activities it's time for a break! Luckily you can find a decent amount of green areas all around the city. My favourite one has been Bosques de Palermo
more info: Top 5 Buenos Aires Parks (#6):
7) Tango
Tango was born in San Telmo and there is an option to watch it for free at the sundays open-air market.
8) San Telmo Market / Sunday fair
The best day to visit the oldest barrio of Buenos Aires, San Telmo, is possibly on Sundays where you can stroll along the antique-market. Though it is very touristy it is a good place to get some nice souvenirs.
more info: San Telmo (#8):
9) Steak & Malbec Wine
There is no visit to Argentina without having a great steak sided by some of the best wines you can find! Beside having an Asado with friends, the restaurant Las Cabras is a very good and budget friendly option which is quite popular by locals, too!
more info: Steak Restaurant (#9):
Las Cabras - cheap, tasty and popular amongst locals (
10) Party & Nightlife
Buenos Aires is exhausting as you can party there every night ;) Around the neighborhood Palermo you can find a high density of Bars and Clubs.

Buenos Aires Puerto Madero - The New Waterfront
Buenos Aires' Puerto Madero, one of the most successful waterfront renewal projects in the world
Puerto Madero, also known within the urban planning community as the Puerto Madero Waterfront, is a barrio (district) of the Argentine capital at Buenos Aires CBD, occupying a significant portion of the Río de la Plata riverbank and representing the latest architectural trends in the city of Buenos Aires.
The New Port of Buenos Aires was completed in 1926, making the existing Madero docks superfluous. Though these continued to serve in ancillary port functions, the zone gradually decayed, becoming one of the city's most degraded areas, a mixture of warehouses and large tracts of undeveloped land. In 1925, 1940, 1960, 1969, 1971, 1981 and 1985, successive proposals were put forth with the intent of urbanizing the old port, or to demolish it outright; none of these plans came to fruition, however.
In the 1990s, local and foreign investment led to a massive regeneration effort, recycling and refurbishing the west side warehouses into elegant houses, offices, lofts, private universities, luxurious hotels and restaurants that conform to a gallery of options for this new district in a city that grew up turning its back to the river. Led by the 1999 opening of the Buenos Aires Hilton, luxurious hotels, state-of-the-art multiplex cinemas, theatres, cultural centres, and office and corporate buildings are located mostly in the east side
Puerto Madero has been redeveloped with international flair, drawing interest from renown architects such as Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster, César Pelli and Phillippe Starck, among others. Today one of the trendiest boroughs in Buenos Aires, it has become the preferred address for growing numbers of young professionals and retirees, alike. Increasing property prices have also generated interest in the area as a destination for foreign buyers, particularly those in the market for premium investment properties.
The neighborhood's road network has been entirely rebuilt, especially in the east side. The layout of the east side consists currently of three wide boulevards running east-west crossed by the east side's main street, Juana Manso Avenue. The layout is completed with some other avenues and minor streets, running both east-west and north-south, and by several pedestrianized streets.

TRAMS AND LIGHT RAIL IN BUENOS AIRES ARGENTINA
The City of Buenos Aires in Argentina once had a huge tramway network extending to many areas of the city. By the early 1960's all tram routes had been replaced by buses.
At present there are 4 Tramway / Light Rail systems in operation in the Buenos Aires area. The tourist tram which operates over street trackage operates at weekends with preserved trams from Portugal and Buenos Aires, while pre-metro line E2 is an extension of the subway system but operates as an independent system. Tren de la Costa runs on a formation of a former broad gauge suburban railway and uses Italian built trains on standard gauge tracks. Most recent Light Rail line is the demonstration line which runs along the docks in central Buenos Aires and utilizes a Spanish Citadis type tram. Sit back and enjoy some transport in the land of the Tango......Don't forget to watch our trains around Buenos Aires Video.

Buenos Aires: Building a People Friendly City
Buenos Aires is fast becoming one of the most looked up to cities in the world when it comes to reinventing itself thru transportation.
Just over a year ago they opened MetroBus BRT (constructed in less than 7 months) on 9 de Julio Avenue, which many say is the world's widest street. The redistribution of 4 lanes of car traffic to exclusive bus use has yielded huge dividends for the city and is a bold statement from the administration of Mayor Mauricio Macri about how Buenos Aires thinks about its streets. Over 650,000 people now ride it every day, and MetroBus has cut the average commute in the city center from 50 to 55 minutes to an astonishing 18 minutes!
But that has not been the only benefit. MetroBus's creation freed up miles of narrow streets that used to be congested and crammed buses. Previously, Buenos Aires had some pedestrian streets, but removing the buses allowed the administration to create a large network of shared streets in the downtown where pedestrians now rule. On the shared streets, cers aren't permitted to park and the speed limit is an astonishingly low 10km/h. Yes, that is not a misprint, you cannot drive a car more than 6 mph!!!
Bicycling has also seen a huge increase in the past four years. Up from .5% to 3% mode share and climbing. Ecobici is the city's bike share system which is expanding to 200 stations in early 2015. Oh and add this amazing fact: Ecobici is free for all users for the first hour!
In the next few years, if Buenos Aires continues this push, it could land near the top of most livable cities in the world. As you walk the city you can see that people are craving more pedestrian space.
