Urban Safari Rescue Society - Welcome Video
At Urban Safari Rescue Society in Surrey, BC, we rescue and care for exotic animals surrendered to us, as well as educate the public about animals, the natural world and conservation issues. The numbers of animals our dedicated group of volunteers and staff care for is always growing. We provide a safe, secure home for these unwanted animals for the rest of their natural lives. The Cinemazoo program, now operated by Urban Safari Rescue Society, has been visiting schools, day cares, community centers, libraries, and festivals educating children and adults about animals, the natural world, and conservation issues for 28 years. We encourage curiosity and learning about animals and their world: tour our facility, sign up for a course or arrange a live animal visit to your school, organization or home - there is so much to learn!

A lot goes into the development of a regional park. Surrey Bend Regional Park is one of the few remaining large, non-dyked areas on the lower Fraser River and it's a balance of creating public amenities with protecting the natural environment.

Healthy Families BC: Winners Revealed in Walking Challenge
(Transcript to follow)
Health Minister Michael de Jong joined mayors at the annual Union of BC Municipalities convention in Vancouver to announce the five communities that won $10,000 in the Healthy Families BC Walking Challenge. One of those lucky communities, Tumbler Ridge, also walked away with an extra $50,000. There were more than 5,000 entries from 191 communities.
Transcript:
Michael de Jong: The additional prize of $50, 000 dollars will go to the community of...... Tumbler Ridge!!
[crowd cheers]
Larry White, Mayor of Tumbler Ridge: This amount here, I don't know if I would mean that much to Vancouver or other large communities with big budgets, but, small communities like ours (under 4,000) that's HUGE! And we have 33 trails that we're trying to promote and upgrade and ...boy...this will REALLY go a long ways to making it perfect!
Machael de Jong: What we're celebrating is the Walking Challenge that we issued to communities and British Columbians in August, and people responded in DROVES and sent in their stories about what they did this summer to get healthy, to go for a walk, and 5 communities have reaped the benefits.
Barbara Desjardins, Mayor of Esquimalt: This $10,000 dollars is just absolutely fantastic for our community. To be able to put funds back into trails and walking tours that we've already produced is going to be phenomenal! It's part of our tourism strategy.
George Peary, Mayor of Abbotsford: It didn't surprise me that a lot of citizens went online and talked about their walking experiences. We've just completed a 35km Discovery Trail in our city that links the city East to West.
Dan Ashton, Mayor of Penticton: Um...it's a lot and we have a wonderful trail network but we want to continue to add and add and that's where the money's going.
Mary Sjostrom, Mayor of Quesnel: We going to be able to upgrade our signage, and give more...better directional signage for folks that are wanting to walk around our trails!
Michael de Jong: it's a pretty simple recipe. Eat smart. Get some exercise. Doesn't mean run a marathon, it means go for a walk, get active, do something. And...ah...in a beautiful setting like this, a chance to get outdoors, winter, summer, spring, or fall... THAT'S the recipe! And all of us can do it.
