Urbana-Champaign Books to Prisoners only sends books to state and federal prisons in Illinois. These are a list of other groups you might contact and the locations they serve. When writing them, please include the complete address of the inmate and their ID number and indicate if the prison has any restrictions on reading material. Since it is difficult to provide specific titles, you should request books by topic or author and prioritize your requests. Scott Bonner, Ferguson Municipal Public Library, Information City Lecture Series
How did the library work with the community to respond to events connected to the Michael Brown shooting by a local officer? Hear from Scott Bonner from the Ferguson Municipal Public Library.
The Info City Lectures are the current instantiation of GSLIS's Digital Divide Lecture Series which has run each fall since 2008, featuring first-hand-reports from campus and community leaders achieving or studying digital equality and informatization in many sectors across society.
Information City lectures are hosted in conjunction with InfoCityCU, a partnership between the Community Informatics Lab at the Graduate School of Library & Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, headed by Associate Professor Kate Williams and Professor Emeritus Abdul Alkalimat; the Department of African American Studies; the Digital Equality Initiative; and Chrisp Media.
InfoCityCU builds upon decades of public computing innovation in Champaign-Urbana to pursue equitable and citywide access to technology, digital literacy, and relevant online content and applications.
This new lecture series, launched earlier in September 2014 with a lecture by Celeste Choate, director of the Urbana Free Library, is an evolution of the Digital Divide lecture series that GSLIS has sponsored for the past six years. “An information city is coming into being. The industrial city was a result of all kinds of forces. This time around, can we be more conscious and deliberate? Can we make sure the outcomes work for all of us? This means conversation, so the Digital Divide Lectures become the Information City Lectures,” Williams explained.
For more information visit the Information City Lecture Series webpage, go.illinois.edu/infocity.

BEAUTIFUL ILLINOIS: A Timelapse of UIUC [4K]
7 hrs 50 min of recording, 5 hours of editing, and 2 months of procrastination later, I am proud to present, Beautiful Illinois, a timelapse of 17 different locations in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign! This project was done because I was bored during my summer session at UIUC and wanted to take my camera and shoot some stuff around campus when there wasn't as many people around. I've always found time lapses really fun to watch, so I thought why not do one of my school? As such, this is the result!
Some fun facts:
- Video was shot in 4K, 24FPS, 100Mbps, on a Panasonic G7 with the included kit lens, with no color correction done in editing-what you see is literally what you get out of the box with this camera. I'm honestly pretty impressed since I literally just framed the camera and then pressed record and sat there for 30 mins doing nothing.
- Video was edited on Adobe Premiere Elements 15-this is my first project edited on this as I was using Movie Studio beforehand, and Movie Studio wouldn't let you speed up the clips more than 4X for some reason, hence the shift to this. Adobe Premiere Elements does let you do a lot more than Movie Studio, and although it is more expensive, even for students, it is still better than having to pay for a yearly license like the Pro version.
- The excessive camera shake in some clips is thanks to the wind and a $15 tripod that I found on B&H. I have since upgraded to a Manfrotto Compact Advanced tripod, which is MUCH sturdier.
- The total amount of disk space for just the raw clips along is taking up 295 GB of space. This edited file alone is 9.2 GB.
- Final video was rendered out in 4K 60FPS 300 Mbps because everything's a bit overkill anyways, so why not this (I know YouTube's going to compress it to hell, but oh well).
Big thanks to Approaching Nirvana, who allows use of their songs on any Youtube video as long as there is a creative component added to it! Check them out at This song is called Lapse (very appropriately named).
