Urquhart Castle sits beside Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland. The castle is on the A82 road, 21 kilometres (13 mi) south-west of Inverness and 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) east of the village of Drumnadrochit.
The present ruins date from the 13th to the 16th centuries, though built on the site of an early medieval fortification. Founded in the 13th century, Urquhart played a role in the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century. It was subsequently held as a royal castle, and was raided on several occasions by the MacDonald Earls of Ross. The castle was granted to the Clan Grant in 1509, though conflict with the MacDonalds continued. Despite a series of further raids the castle was strengthened, only to be largely abandoned by the middle of the 17th century. Urquhart was partially destroyed in 1692 to prevent its use by Jacobite forces, and subsequently decayed. In the 20th century it was placed in state care and opened to the public: it is now one of the most-visited castles in Scotland.

The buildings of the castle were laid out around two main enclosures on the shore. The northern enclosure or Nether Bailey includes most of the more intact structures, including the gatehouse, and the five-storey Grant Tower at the north end of the castle. The southern enclosure or Upper Bailey, sited on higher ground, comprises the scant remains of earlier buildings.

There was a lot of tourist stuff, but the main place to see is definately Urquhart Castle! It lies on the western back around halfway along the loch! We saw an amazing view of loch ness and also a double rainbow!

The iconic Urquhart Castle is one of Scotland's most popular attractions. Situated on the north-western shore of Loch Ness, it offers visitors fascinating insights into its dramatic history and spectacular views over the world-famous Loch.
Situated on the banks of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle has for centuries played an important role in the control of a key route through the Scottish Highlands. Built in the thirteenth century it changed hands several times during the Wars of Independence, witnessed violent clan rivalry and withstood Jacobite uprisings.
It’s easy to fall in love with the atmospheric beauty of Urquhart Castle which sits on Strone Point, a rocky peninsula on Loch Ness.
Some people believe that the castle was originally the site of a Pictish fort, visited by St Columba in 565AD. No one can say for certain that was the case. However, there was almost certainly a Pictish settlement in the area at the time, as it would have been a key site from which to control the Great Glen and Northern Scotland.
Written records show that a castle has stood on this site from at least the 13th Century, as a result of an uprising by the people of Moray against King Alexander II. With the rebellion quashed, the King named his son-in-law, Alan Durward, the Lordship of Urquhart, and established a stronghold in the area.
Following the death of Alan Durward, in 1275, Urquhart Castle passed to John Comyn, Lord of Badenoch. This marked the beginning of a turbulent time in the castle’s history as ownership frequently passed back and forth between the English and Scottish Crown.
However by the late 14th Century, a new conflict had arisen. The Scottish Crown was now trying to defend itself against incursions from the Macdonalds, Lords of the Isles. For 150 years, the ownership of the castle changed hands between the two sides, before order was somewhat restored by George Gordon, the 2nd Earl of Huntly.
In 1689, Urquhart Castle saw its last action, when a small garrison supporting the Protestant monarchy of William and Mary held off a much larger Jacobite force.The Government force withstood the subsequent Jacobite uprisings but in 1692 blew up key sections of the castle to prevent it being used as a military base again.

There are several buses a day that pass through Drumnadrochit, notably the No 17 between Drum and Inverness bus station. Buses are less frequent outside the summer season, especially on a Sunday.
The village is popular with tourists and there are three larger hotels in (or close to) the village, two smaller inns (the Ben Leva Hotel and Fiddler's Rest) and a cosy hostel (the Loch Ness Backpackers Lodge). Attractions include Nessieland, a Nessie themed exhibition about the Loch Ness Monster, a Loch Ness Exhibition and nearby Urquhart Castle, one of the most visited sites managed by Historic Scotland.
Drumnadrochit hosts the Glenurquhart Highland Games at the end of August each year. A winter event, Drums and Rockets, has also taken place in recent years.[6] The community hosts a Bonfire Night fireworks display around the 5th of November. Agriculture and forestry are also major local employers. Drumnadrochit is also the home of the Loch Ness Brewery, a microbrewery launched in 2011 with considerable early success.

• The maximum distance RPAS can be flown from the operator is 500 metres
• The minimum visibility needs to be 5 km
• RPAS must be flown in line of sight of the operator
• An RPAS cannot be flown at night without special permission from the CAA
• Permission must be obtained from the owner of the take-off point
• An RPAS cannot be flown within 50 metres of structures, vehicles or people that are not under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft
• An RPAS cannot be flown over or within 150 metres of any built up area

There are several buses a day that pass through Drumnadrochit, notably the No 17 between Drum and Inverness bus station. Buses are less frequent outside the summer season, especially on a Sunday.
The village is popular with tourists and there are three larger hotels in (or close to) the village, two smaller inns (the Ben Leva Hotel and Fiddler's Rest) and a cosy hostel (the Loch Ness Backpackers Lodge). Attractions include Nessieland, a Nessie themed exhibition about the Loch Ness Monster, a Loch Ness Exhibition and nearby Urquhart Castle, one of the most visited sites managed by Historic Scotland.
Drumnadrochit hosts the Glenurquhart Highland Games at the end of August each year. A winter event, Drums and Rockets, has also taken place in recent years.[6] The community hosts a Bonfire Night fireworks display around the 5th of November. Agriculture and forestry are also major local employers. Drumnadrochit is also the home of the Loch Ness Brewery, a microbrewery launched in 2011 with considerable early success.
