Daisetsuzan, the Roof of Hokkaido
Panorama of the high Daisetsuzan plateau on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. The video was taken on July 17, 2012 at an elevation of about 7,000 feet above sea level near Kumadake (Bear Peak). We were hiking the Daisetsuzan Traverse from the Sugatami Ponds, over the volcano Asahidake (highest peak on Hokkaido), and across to the upper station of the Kurodake chairlift. The second peak you see after the video starts is Asahidake; you can make out the trail leading from it.

The Kiso Valley, or Kisodani, is located in Nagano Prefecture, and runs alongside the mountains of the Central Alps. An ancient 70 km trade route called the Kisoji was developed along the valley and served as a very important means of commerce in the area.
The Kisoji became even more important from the beginning of the Edo Period, when it was amalgamated with other routes in the formation of the 500 km long Nakasendo. The Nakasendo, meaning path through mountains, was one of the two means of transportation between Edo and Kyoto. It compared to the other principal transportation route at that time, the Tokaido, which ran along the sea shore.
Because of restrictions by the shogunate, travelers were always forced to make their trips on foot. As a result, post towns developed every few kilometers to provide travelers with places to rest, eat, and find accommodation during their arduous journey.
Along the Kiso Valley, a few post towns, particularly Magome, Tsumago and Narai, have been preserved to look as they did when they served travelers of the Nakasendo. Visitors are able to enjoy the stone paths and wooden buildings of a bygone age.

Sunlight plays hide and seek over a campsite enroute to Baraadsar Lake
Moving clouds make sunlight play hide and seek over a campsite enroute to Baraadsar Lake in Rupin valley.
Baraadsar Lake is located at a height of 4400m between the Rupin and Supin valleys. The lake is virtually on the border of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. This high altitude lake has recently become famous among trekkers. The path to the lake is initially through a green valley and later it is boulder strewn and a bit difficult.
The Rupin valley connects the states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, accessible from Naitwar on Uttarakhand side and from Gosangu village near Rohru on Himachal side.

Eurasia 15: Ulleung-do
On 17th March 2011 I disembarked on the shores of my first East Asian country: South Korea. The ferry from Vladivostok left me at the small coastal town of Donghae (literally 'East Sea'), from where I took a boat to the nearby island of Ulleung-do, where I spent the weekend, learning about Korea and hiking in the mountains. I went back to the peninsula on 20th March and headed towards the Northeast: Sokcho (next video).
