Usa Jingu: One Of Japan's Most Revered Shrines
Usa Jingū (宇佐神宮), also known as Usa Hachimangū (宇佐八幡宮), is a Shinto shrine in the city of Usa in Ōita Prefecture in Japan. Emperor Ojin, who was deified as Hachiman-jin (the tutelary god of warriors), is said to be enshrined in all the sites dedicated to him; and the first and earliest of these was at Usa in the early 8th century. The Usa Jingū has long been the recipient of Imperial patronage; and its prestige is considered second only to that of Ise. The shrine was founded in Kyushu during the Nara period. Ancient records place the foundation of Usa Jingū in the Wadō era (708-714). A temple called Miroku-ji was built next to it in 779, making it what is believed to be the first shrine-temple (jingū-ji) ever. (source, Wikipedia)

Usa Jingu - Oita - 宇佐神宮 - 4K Ultra HD
Also known as Usa Hachimangu or 宇佐八幡宮 in Japanese, is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Usa in Oita prefecture. Founded during the Nara period Usa Jingu has a complex history.
Indeed it is believed that the first foundation of the shrine took place during the Wado era (708-714). Later in 779 a temple called Miroku-ji was built next to Usa Jingu’s first foundation creating a mixed complex now known as Usa Hachimangu-ji or the Usa Hachiman Shrine Temple making the first Shinto and Buddhist temple in Japan. It was in 1868 that the Buddhist part of Usa Hachimangu-ji was removed in order to comply the Shinbutsu Bunri or the Kami and Buddhas Separation Act where Buddhism was considered as a foreign imported religion and influence against the Japanese native Shinto religion.
Usa Jingu suffered many attacks in the past and was totally destroyed in the 16th century by the lord of Funai Otomo Yoshishige a Christian sympathizer.

Kamikura Shrine - Wakayama -
Located near the top of Mt. Gongenyama in Wakayama prefecture you first ascend a very steep stone staircase made of 538 steps to find tucked below a huge boulder where the Kumano deities were said to have descended from heaven to earth. Smaller than its main shrine, Kamikura-Jinja is where the famous Oto Matsuri fire festival takes place every year in February. Here worshipers run down the mountain carrying torches offering a unique spectacle rarely seen across Japan!
