Exploring Kamakura Japan! | Daibutsu (Big Buddha), Japanese Cafe, & Matcha Sweets
We explore Kamakura in today's Japan vlog! Kamakura is famous for the Daibutsu (or Big Buddha) and its historical/nostagic feel to the whole area. We eat at a modern Japanese Tea House Cafe and try various matcha sweets. We loved the relaxed vibe of Kamakura and it was a nice escape from the ever-busy Tokyo. Kamakura was so much fun and would highly recommend making a day trip down there if you are in the Tokyo area! Be sure to read the rest of the description box for details on our trip.
The journey to Kamakura took about one hour from Tokyo Station via the JR Yokosuka Line. Once we got there, we first checked out what was in the vicinity and found a cute donut shop. Do be careful with holding food up in the air since hawks are known to hunt the area. We learned that the hard way lol. For lunch, we went to Momiji Chaya to eat traditional Japanese rice bowl served with tea. Most of the rice bowls were served with shirasu (white broiled fish), which Kamakura is known for. Meals were about 12-13 dollars. The matcha tiramisu is a must-try and several people there seemed like that was the only thing they ordered! We then took a nice scenic walk through the neighborhood to get to the Kotokuin Temple. Took about 30 minutes from Kamakura Station, but you could also take the Enoshima Electric Railway to Hase Station to save time. Kotokuin Temple is home to the Daibutsu (Big Buddha) and such a sight to see! Window shopping of the souvenir stores around the temple was fun. We took home some jelly soaps from Konnyaku Shabon; the soaps smelled so good and made for great gifts! And before we left Kamakura, I had to try the max level of the matcha gelato from Kamakura Chacha. When we got back to Maihama, we quickly grabbed some Pie Face over at Ikspiari for dinner. Long day but a fun-filled one!

Goroko Onsen in Ibaraki Ken , Japan ♨️♨️♨️
Koloa Jodo Mission Hondo
Conceived by Rev. Kodo Tanaka, ninth resident minister, the building of a new temple commenced in June of 1984 and was completed in November, 1985. It is a beautiful temple of Amida Buddha (main Buddha image), measuring 2850 square feet. Contracted by the local firm, Shioi Builders, the work was also shared by local volunteers as well as volunteers from Japan. The interior was designed and crafted by temple artisan Ishikawa of Nagoya and four other craftsmen. The interior construction is uniquely Japanese. The stunning panels adorning the ceiling are the work of Japanese Artist Shuho Koiwai. In the center of the ceiling is a lotus blossom, which is symbolic of the Buddhist religion. Surrounding the lotus are 190 flowers of Hawaii and Japan. The paintings are gorgeous individual works of art, but they are arranged so that the entire ceiling can be viewed as a single painting.
The construction of the ceiling entailed special techniques employed by the temple artisans of Japan and is not often seen in Hawaii. To honor the issei who experienced great adversity in making a life for themselves and their progeny, Artist Koiwai donated his entire work to the people of Koloa Jodo Mission. The name, Shuhozan, which is another name for the temple, was coined in appreciation of Mr. Koiwais generous gift. This video was taken in February 2002 by the current resident minister.
Guinea pigs in Mt. Asuwa | Mt.Asuwa Amusement Park in Fukui City
There is a mountain called Mt. Asuwa, which is only 116 meters high near the center of Fukui City and popular with the city’s residents for hydrangeas and a walking trail throughout the year.
I went to see the guinea pigs in the small zoo in Mt.Asuwa after so long, and I found an expanded space newly built so that you can feed them there. Also, the layout has changed and now they are kept with rabbits.

11 - Statue of Unity
For almost 10 years, workers in India, have been constructing a massive statue of the country’s first deputy prime minister, freedom fighter Sardar Patel. The steel and bronze figure, named the Statue of Unity, is almost 600 feet tall, or roughly TWICE the height of the Statue of Liberty! India’s current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, said that people talk about America's Statue of Liberty. So in order to make a statement about India, that’s why they wanted to make the statue of Sardar Patel twice the size of the Statue of Liberty! The Statue of Unity was designed as a naturalistic and historically accurate representation of Patel. He was built wearing a garment that he would typically wear, in a walking stance. Because of the mounting costs for the sheer size of the statue, the committee overseeing the construction asked for public donations to finish the statue. Farmers across the country were even asked to donate any iron from old pieces of outdated farming equipment not in use! This statue is now the world’s new tallest statue, as it was just recently completed in October of 2018. Its design and construction are by the same developers who built the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. So what’s the damage on the world’s tallest statue? $460 million bucks!
10 - Spring Temple Buddha
You guys ever think wonder where the biggest Buddha statue in the world is? Welllllll think no more, because it’s the Spring Temple Buddha statue located in Lushan County, China! This huge statues took over ten years to build, from 1997 to 2008. This depiction of Buddha is 420 feet tall and it WAS the tallest statue in the world, until around earlier this year. Taking into account the pedestal that it’s put on, the monument has a total height of 682 feet. The project as a whole was estimated to cost roughly $55 million dollars, $18 million of which is for materials that’s used on the statue. It was originally estimated to consist of 1,100 pieces of copper cast, with a total weight of 1,000 tons. Beneath the statue is a Buddhist monastery, which makes sense if you really think about it! The Spring Temple Buddha derives its name from the nearby Tianrui hot spring, which has water at 140 degrees Fahrenheit and is renowned in the area for its supposed healing powers. Hmmmm might as well sell some healing crystals next to the hot bath!
9 - Guanyin of Nanshan
Who doesn’t mind another Buddhist statue? Chinese people, that’s who! The Guanyin statue in Nanshan took over 6 years to build is over 350 feet tall. It’s a portrayal of the Goddess of infinite compassion and mercy for Buddhists everywhere. This statue, located on the southern coast of China, is the tallest statue of Guanyin in the world! Guanyin had twelve wishes during her life, and one of them was to live near the South China Sea, annnnd of course, it’s a reality now. As a symbol of mercy, wisdom and harmony, Guanyin is one of the most popular and accepted Buddhist divinities for people all over the world. The statue has one body and three faces. One face looks at the Chinese mainland, one face looks at Taiwan and the third face looks at the rest of the world! This essentially means that Guanyin will bless and protect not only China but also the entire world. Maybe it’s a big reason why there was the participation of 108 monks from various Buddhist groups all over the world to bless the statue!
