I took a picture of Saburojima, the three islands that live quietly in the sea of Yorishima in Asakuchi City, Okayama Prefecture. Three islands of coarse granite.
They can be arranged regularly at intervals of 10m in height, 15m in length, and about 6m of each other, and can be walked from the mainland side to three islands at low tide.

NHK World 2015 Journeys in Japan Daniela Shiga: Savoring Fall on Shodoshima
[ Journeys in JapanJ ] Savoring Fall on Shodoshima
Though Romanian, some of my ancestors come from Greece. So finding a place in Japan that was full of olive trees and Greek statues just like in the Hellenic country, enjoying mild weather similar to the Mediterranean, was the last thing I ever expected. I traveled by ferry in the Seto Inland Sea to reach Shodoshima, which is often called Japan's Aegean as well as the Olive Island.
Starting with a single sapling planted 100 years ago, there are now thousands of olive trees on the island. Since I visited during the harvesting season, I appreciated the olives in all their colorful stages of ripening, from yellowish green to royal purple to deep, reddish black. I plucked them from the trees and helped make olive oil at a factory. Later, I enjoyed what turned out to be a most delicious meal, a mixture of traditional seasonings combined with the magic of olives.
Another thing that surprised me was the joviality and the rather Latin spirit of the Shodoshima people. I blended into the community fairly quickly, which is not always so easy to do as a foreigner in Japan. People readily opened up to me - and friendships blossomed - during the bento lunch making event and while watching a kabuki performance. The loveliness of it all is that one can also mingle with the pilgrims that come all year round to visit the many temples and shrines scattered around the island. That is an unusual spiritual experience even for Japanese.
So how many uses can we find for the olive trees? Come with me and I will show you a whole range from oil making and dying clothes using the leaves to preparing healthy foods.
Shodoshima is the 2nd largest island in the Seto Inland Sea. Blessed with warm, mild weather, the island has nurtured a distinctive culture. Traveler Daniela Shiga enjoys local food, a kabuki performance and a magical hike at the peak of autumn. From olden times, the olive has been a symbol of peace and prosperity, as well as food with life enhancing benefits. Shodoshima is famous for its high-quality olives, which are on par with those of the Mediterranean. Olive farming was introduced to the island during the Meiji era (1868 - 1912) as part of a government program. Since then, islanders have nurtured their groves with great care. Daniela visits a 3rd-generation olive farmer and later speaks to an artist who produces handicrafts using threads dyed naturally with olive leaves. She also learns about the island's tradition of soy sauce making and joins pilgrims on part of their trek to mountain temples. Her final destination is a shrine where the locals, including school children, perform kabuki.
Places Daniela visited:

牛窓神社
A thousand years ago,or just around that time, there was a Shinto revival in Japan to offset the influence of Buddhism and other belief systems that had made it to Japan from India,China and Korea. Ushimado Shrine was built during a time when Japan was forming an identity (of its own) separate from Korea and China.

I met this sweet stray cat outside of a small fish shop in Ushimado, Setouchi. It was clear someone in the shop was feeding her because she was very friendly. Of course I really wanted to take her back to Canada with me!

SUMMARY
=======
The Seto Inland Sea (瀬戸内海, Seto Naikai), also known as Setouchi or often shortened to Inland Sea, is the body of water separating Honshū, Shikoku, and Kyūshū, three of the four main islands of Japan. The region that includes the Seto Inland Sea and the coastal areas of Honshū, Shikoku, and Kyūshū is known as the Setouchi Region. It serves as a waterway, connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Japan. It connects to Osaka Bay and provides a sea transport link to industrial centers in the Kansai region, including Osaka and Kobe. Before the construction of the San'yō Main Line, it was the main transportation link between Kansai and Kyūshū.
Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Okayama, Hyōgo, Osaka, Wakayama, Kagawa, Ehime, Tokushima, Fukuoka, and Ōita prefectures all have coastlines on the Seto Inland Sea; the cities of Hiroshima, Iwakuni, Takamatsu, and Matsuyama are also located on it.
The Setouchi region is known for its moderate climate, with a stable year-round temperature and relatively low rainfall levels. The sea is also famous for its periodic red tides (赤潮, akashio) caused by dense groupings of certain phytoplankton that result in the death of large numbers of fish.
Since the 1980s, the sea's northern and southern shores have been connected by the three routes of the Honshū–Shikoku Bridge Project, including the Great Seto Bridge, which serves both railroad and automobile traffic.

本蓮寺 Honrenji ...
Ushimado was a major Inland Sea port town in Okayama han, which regularly saw kitamaebune merchant ships, daimyô fleets on sankin kôtai journeys, and Dutch, Ryukyuan, and Korean embassies to Edo, as well as more everyday traffic. Ushimado was also the chief departure point for pilgrims seeking to sail from Honshû to Shikoku to visit Konpira Shrine. Ushimado is today part of Setouchi City, Okayama prefecture. At its Edo period peak, the town was home to about 4000 people.
Okayama han maintained a chaya (teahouse) in the town which served the function of a honjin, providing lodgings for the Ikeda clan lord of Okayama, other daimyô on sankin kôtai journeys, shogunate officials, foreign envoys, and the like who passed through the town. Between 1624 and 1655, Korean missions were entertained and lodged at the Buddhist temple HONREN-JI, which dates to the 15th century, and today features a number of buildings which have been designated Important Cultural Properties. After 1655, these missions were housed in part at the chaya, which was first established in 1630, and renovated in 1669. Korean high officials (上官) and their followers (次官) were often housed at the private home of the village headman (ôshôya), Naraya Sukesaburô, a home which also served as the center of the village administration. The more than 160 middle-ranking officials (中官) in a Korean mission were housed at the home of Nasu Sanpei, a relative of Naraya by marriage, while a row of eight machiya homes were given over to providing lodgings for the 230 or so lower-ranking officials (下官) in the mission. The lord of Tsushima han who escorted these Korean missions typically stayed in the honjin, along with a number of his retainers.

牛窓神社
Among other things, like prospering as a ship building town during the Edo period (1603-1868),wooden latticed storefronts and white-walled merchant houses evoking an atmosphere of bygone eras, being a port-of-call for Korean envoys en route to Edo (a.k.a.Tokyo) when visiting the Tokugawa shogunate, harboring one of only two existing olive gardens in all of Japan(10 hectares with some 2,000 olive trees),... Ushimado is also known as the Mediterranean of Japan. Located aside the seashore, starting from the impressive torii gate, and the many steps leading up,one finds a lush forest surrounding the Ushimado Shrine. It's thought to have been established around a thousand years ago, towards the end of Japan’s Heian Period (794-1185), ~ and the place itself, is steeped in local legends.
