Ushuaia Argentina & Tierra del Fuego Coastal Trail Hike
Ushuaia Argentina is commonly regarded as the southernmost city in the world. Ushuaia is located on the shores of the Beagle Channel surrounded by the Tierra del Fuego National Park, in the Bay of Ushuaia.
We started our day with a short canoeing trip and then a hike thru the Coastal trail in the Tierra del Fuego. The canoeing trip started out in light rain but after 15 minutes it cleared up and we were the only one’s out on the water. It was great. At the end of our canoeing trip we ended at the end of highway 3. You can take this highway all the way to Fairbanks AK.
We hopped into our van for a short ride to the Tierra del Fuego Coastal trail head to start our hike. This hike is a moderate hike, no big mountains to climb but will take some time to complete, about 2 ½ hours. Great views of the Beagle Channel.

A Boat Trip in Patagonia to View Penguins on the Beagle Channel near Ushuaia
On a boat from Ushuaia, we traveled east on the Beagle Channel and eventually landed at Martillo Island, where we saw Magellenic and Gentoo Penguins. Along the way, we switched to a smaller boat at Estancia Harberton, the oldest farm in Terria del Feugo.
Other sites: Sea lions in the Beagle Channel and the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse.
The tour was operated by PiraTour.
Information about the penguins from the website of Estancia Harberton:
By agreement with Estancia Harberton, the Centro Austral de Investigaciones Científicas (CADIC) in Ushuaia and the Government of Tierra del Fuego, 80 persons in four groups per day are permitted to walk among the penguins on a designated trail. For safety reasons people are only allowed to walk on the island with a specialized tour guide, in a limited area and under very specific rules, which help us keep both visitors and penguins happy. Part of a scientific experiment on the effect of humans on the penguins, this walk is among the Magellanic penguins; the gentoo penguins are more touchy and must not be disturbed.
The Harberton estancia, which covers 50,000 acres of mountains, forests, lakes and islands, has, since the opening of the road in 1978, been managed as a working nature reserve. Two parts of the reserve are special: 'The Park' at the homestead, which has been fenced since the 1890s, and Isla Yécapasela (the native name; it is Isla Martillo on the maps) and its surrounding islands in the Beagle Channel. Originally used by the Bridges family for sheep and even cattle (forming instant fields in the early days), these were removed in the 1960s and penguins have resettled on Yecapasela.
As of 2009, Yécapasela has a colony of 3000 pairs of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus), 16 pairs of gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua)- the only rookery in continental Argentina- and 155 pairs of rock cormorants (Phalacrocorax magellanicus) nest on the cliffs to the south. This penguin colony, the only one reachable from Ushuaia, is growing gradually each year. Yécapasela is a great habitat for these penguins, as there are very few predators in the area, abundant food and the ground and vegetation provide adequate shelter for nests and chicks.
Penguins start to arrive on the island early in October to start their annual breeding season, raise their chicks and molt their feathers. Around late March and first days of April, penguins leave to begin their usual migration northward, and will feed at sea for more than 6 months, until the winter is over and spring calls them again to breed on land.
At Yécapasela you may also see the predatory skua (Catharacta chilensis), and very occasionally, a king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonica) may visit.

Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, South America
Ushuaia is the capital of Provincia de Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur Province, Argentina. It is commonly regarded as the southernmost city in the world (a title long disputed by smaller Puerto Williams). Ushuaia is located in a wide bay on the southern coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, bounded on the north by the Martial mountain range and on the south by the Beagle Channel. It is the only municipality in the Department of Ushuaia, which has an area of 9,390 km2 (3,625 sq mi). The Selk'nam Indians, also called the Ona, first arrived in Tierra del Fuego about 10,000 years ago. The southern group of the Selk'nam, the Yaghan (also known as Yámana), occupied what is now Ushuaia, living in continual conflict with the northern inhabitants of the island.
The British ship HMS Beagle, under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy, first reached the channel on January 29, 1833 during its maiden voyage surveying Tierra del Fuego. The city was originally named by early British missionaries using the native Yámana name for the area. Much of the early history of the city and its hinterland is described in Lucas Bridges's book Uttermost Part of the Earth (1948). The name Ushuaia first appears in letters and reports of the South American Mission Society in England. The British missionary Waite Hockin Stirling became the first European to live in Ushuaia when he stayed with the Yámana people between 18 January and mid-September 1869. In 1870 more British missionaries arrived to establish a small settlement. The following year the first marriage was performed. During 1872, 36 baptisms and 7 marriages and the first European birth (Thomas Despard Bridges) in Tierra del Fuego were registered. The first house constructed in Ushuaia was a pre-assembled 3 room home prepared in the Falkland Islands in 1870 for Reverend Thomas Bridges. One room was for the Bridges family, a second was for a Yámana married couple, while the third served as the chapel. Building of the Government of the province in the city of Ushuaia, with typical local architecture. During 1873 Juan and Clara Lawrence, the first Argentine citizens to visit Ushuaia, arrived to teach school. That same year the Argentine President Julio Argentino Roca promoted the establishment of a penal colony for re-offenders, modeled after one in Tasmania, Australia, in an effort to secure permanent residents from Argentina and to help establish Argentine sovereignty over all of Tierra del Fuego. But only after the Boundary treaty of 1881 between Chile and Argentina did formal efforts get under way to establish the township and its prison. During the 1880s, many gold prospectors came to Ushuaia following rumors of large gold fields, which proved to be false. On the 12th of October 1884, as part of the South Atlantic Expedition, Commodore Augusto Lasserre established the sub-division of Ushuaia, with the missionaries and naval officers signing the Act of Ceremony. Don Feliz M Paz was named Governor of Tierra del Fuego and in 1885 named Ushuaia as its capital. In 1885 the territory police was organized under Antonio A Romero with headquarters also in Ushuaia. But it was not until 1904 that the Federal Government of Argentina recognized Ushuaia as the capital of Tierra del Fuego. Ushuaia suffered several epidemics, including typhus, pertussis, and measles, that decimated the native population. But because the Yámana were not included in census data the exact numbers lost are not known. The first census was held in 1893 with 113 men and 36 women living in Ushuaia. The prison was formally announced in an Executive order by Roca in 1896. By 1911 the Yámana had all practically disappeared, so the mission was closed. The population grew to 1,558 by the 1914 census. In 1896 the prison received its first inmates, mainly re-offenders and dangerous prisoners transferred from Buenos Aires but also some political prisoners. A separate military prison opened in 1903 at the nearby Puerto Golondrina. The two prisons merged in 1910, and that combined complex still stands today. It operated until 1947, when President Juan Perón closed it by executive order in response to the many reports of abuse and unsafe practices. Most of the guards stayed in Ushuaia, while the prisoners were relocated to other jails farther north. After the prison closed, it became a part of the Base Naval Ushuaia (Spanish), functioning as a storage and office facility until the early 1990s. Later it was converted into the current Museo Maritimo de Ushuaia.

Our visit to Ushuaia, Argentina was awesome. Especially when we opted to hop on a HeliUshuaia helicopter and see the end of the world from a different perspective. Flying over town and through the Andes River valleys was great. We even made a pit stop on top of one the mountains for a sip of bubbly.

Ushuaia - Tierra Del Fuego - La Ciudad Más Austral Del Mundo / The Southernmost City In The World
La Ciudad Más Austral Del Mundo / The southernmost city in the world
El Fin Del Mundo / The End Of The World
Talking about the end of the world is talking about Ushuaia. This is the southernmost city on the planet. Due to its location near the South Pole, it has approximately eighteen hours of sunlight in the summer, whereas in the winter, it only has seven or eight. But this does not prevent tourists from visiting it once and again.
In the Yámana tongue, Ushuaia means bay looking onto the West. Situated on the shores of the vast Beagle Channel, this beautiful city offers sceneries second to none. The forests, the mountains, the sea, the glaciers and the wind dominate the landscape. The city is surrounded by Mount Martial to the West and by Mounts Olivia and Cinco Hermanos to the East.
The inventiveness of its dwellers has helped them become adapted to its whimsical geography. The modern buildings and typical constructions of these latitudes give shape to an extremely picturesque and colorful city in the eye of all visitors.
Its gastronomic and accommodation infrastructure meets all expectations. It welcomes thousands of international visitors that reach Ushuaia lured by the slogan reach the end of the world.
A tourist destination indeed, Ushuaia is chosen for the practice of hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, sport fishing and the most spectacular voyages along the Beagle Channel and Lapataia Bay in Tierra del Fuego National Park. The prison at end of the world is another tourist attraction.
In the winter, visitors may enjoy skiing and rides on sleds pulled by dogs at Mount Castor. Its modern chairlifts and its school have turned it into one of the best ski centers in the country.
This is Ushuaia: it has everything for everyone. For some people, it is the end of the world. For others, it is the beginning of everything.
