Saiki City in Oita Prefecture – Home to delicious seafood and cat island Fukashima
Saiki City, in Oita Prefecture, is located on Japan's southern island of Kyushu, about 780 km south-west of Tokyo, and 150km east of Fukuoka City. It is the fifth largest city by population and the largest city by area in Kyushu located in the eastern prefecture of Oita, and the centre of the south-east region of Oita. Saiki is pleasantly located on Saiki bay, part of the Bungo Channel that feeds the Inland Sea of Japan (Setonaikai). Situated on the coastline, Saiki experiences mild weather all year round, due to the influence of the warm currents along the Bungo Channel. Rainfall is most prevalent from June to early July, and the chance of snow is limited. Due to is close proximity to the sea, Saiki City is famous for delicious seafood and beautiful coast lines. Chien Chien from Taiwan will take you on a tour through Saiki city and show you famous places like Nishi Sushi Restaurant and Oita’s cat island Fukushima.

Usuki Stone Buddha Fire Festival
So, this video is from back in the summer before I got internet. In August, the town of Usuki in Oita had a fire festival at their Stone Buddhas.
The JETs organised a little BBQ on the beach before heading to the buddhas. Unfortunately, I stayed at the beach a little too long and missed the tours that were given by local students.
The Stone Buddhas are a national treasure so I was glad to see them. However, I was a little disappointed that I missed the tours from students. Overall, it was a cool little festival.
** Also, sorry about the shakiness of the video. My hands were extra shaky this day. ???? **
Much love and happy travels

Uesuge Shrine and Samurai Village Yonezawa Yamagata Japan
Morning walk as the sun rose over Uesugi Shrine and Samurai Village from a place I have been visiting for many years. It a place of the Uesugi Shrine, Japanese gardens and history together with a center for visual arts.
In February the community holds The festival of lights from this place where 300 snow lanterns are made and over 3000 candles light the way. Local vendors set up with hot food and my favorite is the local traditional precision drum band that plays every hour.
On this early morning visit I woke up early to watch the sun rise over the shrine. I also want to to a LIVE broadcast using the Periscope app. The live broadcast went well with many friends and family tuning in to watch. However, using the internet connection and a sim card I purchased in Japan was not the greatest from live video broadcasting. Hens, the quality of the video is not the greatest in this case. Lesson learned.
This was a great morning to do this walk as it was a sunny day. Over the next few days I wanted to do the walk again and only record the video however, the balance of the week the weather was not the best.
I hope you enjoy my morning walk through the Uesugi Shrine and Samurai Village.
Thank you for watching.

White Plumb Tower and Tower of Eri - Itoman Okinawa, Japan
The White Plumb Tower:
It is in this location during the Battle of Okinawa where a number of school children were killed. They had been hiding in the nearby cave and when the US Military called out for survivors none responded, scared of what the US Military would do to them. Following protocol the US Military then bombarded the cave with hand grenades and flame throwers. The children were killed.
The Tower of Eri:
It was at this location where a fight happened during the Battle of Okinawa between the 32nd Infantry and 22nd Regiment. They were whipped out on June 17 1945. This is also known as the land on which the 10th Army Commander Lieutenant General Buckner was killed. After the war the worship and collecting of remains that were scattered among the fields gave reason to build this monument. It is dedicated to move than 12,000 spirits including troops as well as residents.
Chuu uganabira! My name is Kathryn and I have been living on the beautiful island of Okinawa for almost a decade. I spend most of my time immersing myself in the culture, learning about the history of the island and way of life past and present. In 2011 I decided to start sharing my experiences here on YouTube to offer newcomers and those interested in the island the perspective of someone who has been living here long term.
