Usuki's samurai district is located at its city center, and parts of it keep the flavor of an old castle town with their stone paved alleys lined by premodern looking houses.
The main attraction is the Nioza Historical Road, a 200 meter photogenic narrow alleyway which runs along temples and residences built in Edo Period style architecture, making a feeling of the past. Parallel to it runs the Haccho Oji Shopping Street, a merchant street with a neighborhood atmosphere, lined by shops selling local specialties, groceries and etc. Walking westwards for about five minutes brings you to Ryugenji, with nice three-storied pagoda.
The Ruins of Usuki Castle
It is located on the eastern side of the district. Currently a neighborhood park is located on the former castle grounds. Unfortunately, most of the castle buildings including the main keep have been destroyed over the years, and today the only prominent structures remaining are a turret and a gate standing along the park's entrance.

THE CREEPIEST SHRINE IN JAPAN | Usuki, Oita
A friend mentioned that there is a shrine with stacks of bones around it and we HAD to check it out.
We had to drive through some rugged roads and climb an almost vertical mountain cliff. It was definitely a cool shrine inside a cave. It's apparently a hunting shrine - somewhere to pray for/give thanks for successful hunts by returning the skulls of the animal. The skulls of hunted boars and deers were piled about knee high.
Much love and happy travels

After crossing the beautifully arched Kintai-kyo Bridge in Iwakuni city, Yamaguchi Prefecture, visitors can see the statue of Kikkawa Hiroyoshi. Kikkawa, the 3rd lord of Iwakuni, was heavily involved in the construction of the bridge after the original bridge was washed away.
Behind Kikkawa’s statue is Kikko Park, a beautiful, spacious area blessed with nature. During the Edo Periods, the residences of the Kikkawa family were located here, in Kikko Park with relatives living nearby. As a result, in addition to the fountains and spectacular natural surroundings, Kikko Park contains ruminants of former samurai residences and museums displaying historic artifacts of this part of Japan.

Chiran 知覧 is a small town in the middle of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. Within the town there is a preserved samurai district with houses and gardens that date back about 250 years. Chiran's isolated location at the southern end of Kyushu has allowed the district to keep much of its historical character intact.
The preserved samurai district consists of a 700 meter long street within downtown Chiran that runs parallel to the main thoroughfare. The street itself is very attractive, with the rock walls and hedges of residences and the forested hillsides in the distance. A historic atmosphere.

[Cinematic] Usuki Stone Buddhas - Oita - 臼杵磨崖仏
Just a few kilometers southwest of the beautiful city of Usuki in Oita, you will find the amazing set of stone curved buddhas known as the Usuki Stone Buddhas.
Usually made of wood or metal, the Usuki Stone Buddhas are unique in many ways. Created around the Heian Period (794-1185), the Usuki Stone Buddhas are carved from soft volcanic rocks from Mount Aso, giving sculptors a soft and highly workable material to work with. Also, the Usuki Stone Buddhas feature Japan's most important number of such statues and as such making the whole area not only unique but also one of Oita’s most important cultural heritage locations.
