Japanese Knife & Sword City: Seki Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Traveling for KNIVES and SWORDS! The Japanese knife is quite simply the best in the world. The place best known for them is Seki (関市) in Gifu where Japanese Samurai swords have been forged for over 700 years. That tradition continues today in its knives and cutlery. They're perfect.
Following World War 2, the city changed from forging the katana to producing some of the world's best knives and cutlery. So, I ended up at Seki Station recently -- to buy the best knife in Japan! Maybe even a samurai sword, too.
In this episode, John travels to Seki city in Gifu prefecture to check out the CUTLERY FESTIVAL known as the HAMONO MATSURI (刃物まつり) in Japan. Now only will you find over 43 knife makers selling their best at discounted prices, you'll see the most unique knives anywhere as well as Chanbara performances (Samurai Sword Fight Acting).
The most unique part of the Hamono Festuval is an authentic demonstration of traditional sword forging using Tamahagane Steel.
HOW MUCH IS A REAL SAMURAI SWORD?
They start at 400,000 to 600,000 Yen ($4,000 to $6000) and can go up to $20,000! We'll see swords being made in Seki.
HOW TO BUY A JAPANESE KNIFE:
There many things to consider such as the type of steel, the type of knife, it's balance and of course, it's price.
WHEN IS SEKI'S HAMONO CUTLERY FESTIVAL ( 刃物まつり ) ?
2019 October 12th and 13th (Saturday & Sunday)
URL: (English available)
* It takes place on the second weekend of October annually.
The knife I bought:
Mcusta ZANMAI Classic Pro Damascus Flame
Santoku 180mm ¥15,000 Festival Price
Hida Beef (Hida Gyu 飛騨牛) is one of Japan's top wagyu beef and worth trying in Gifu or the Nagoya area.
HOW TO GET TO SEKI:
Best is to rent a car. It's easiest to get around this way because trains don't leave often in the countryside and many places like Monet's Pond can be accessed only by infrequent buses.
By Train, it's a short and scenic ride from Nagoya Station or Gifu Station.

THANK YOU!
I want to say ARIGATOU GOZAIMASU to Seki city and the wonderful people who helped me make this special episode. If you are interested in Seki, please check out their sightseeing page and feel free to contact them. They really want you to enjoy their hometown! -john
What is Damascus Steel?
Mr. Walter Sorrells made an excellent video on YouTube explaining it. I also learned more about knife making from his channel.

Lyrics:
Do you remember the 21st night of September?
Love was changing the minds of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away
Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing.
As we danced in the night,
Remember how the stars stole the night away
Ba de ya, say do you remember
Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, never was a cloudy day
Ba de ya de ya de ya
Ba de ya de ya de ya
Ba de ya de ya de ya de ya

Canada d'Eh Celebration and Carshow with Dennis Gage / My Classic Car - 2018
We had the privilege of having Dennis Gage come to film our Canada d'Eh Celebration and Carshow for episode of his My Classic Car TV show at Langley Speedway in Langley BC.
There were well over 500 vehicles on the grass which is the old pit area and an additional 250 cars in the parking area of the track.
The 3 food trucks did an awesome job of feeding the 1200 or so people on site and Top Secret & Agent C entertain us with some great tunes.
The song on this video was recorded at the track, live while the band was playing during the show.
Special thanks to Craig from Metro Vancouver Media for filming the show as well and putting this great clip together.

The Avanti Group Inc - Ultimate Travel Guide in Tokyo: Try these hip 'hoods
Let's call it the original big in Japan export: Godzilla, the city-crushing amphibious dino-monster, returns to theatres later this week. Japan has long unleashed its unique cultural phenomena -- from Victorian-dressed Lolita girls to its wide-eyed anime characters -- on the world.
Toy designer and photographer Koji Harmon grew up in L.A. on a diet of such Japanese playthings as Microman and Kamen Rider. He's now based in Tokyo creating and selling soft vinyl collectible figures through Comet Debris (cometdebris.com).
The new movie may definitely inspire me and other makers to do some Godzilla or kaiju-style characters, says Harmon, who shares his favourite places to play in Tokyo with Karan Smith.
1. Kichijoji
This is an area of western Tokyo which includes Inokashira Park, shops, cafés, restaurants and department stores. The Ghibli Museum [showcasing the animation of Studio Ghibli] is here as well. The park is pretty big, with a large pond where you can rent canoes or swan pedal boats. It's surrounded by trees and is beautiful in all seasons. It feels like you're not in Tokyo. It's less crowded than some of the other shopping areas. Kichijoji Station on the Inokashira Line
2. Nakano Broadway
This is a shopping mall, which includes tons of manga, character and vintage toy shops. Mandarake has several stores in the mall, and they're known for buying comics, videos, books, toys, character goods from collectors and reselling them in their specialty shops. So their stock always changes. This is the go-to place for Japanese otaku [or seriously obsessed collectors]. For food, Nakano Broadway has several tiny restaurants, and the streets surrounding it are lined with many bars and restaurants. North of Nakano Station on the Chuo Line at the end of Sun Mall
3. Shimokitazawa
This Tokyo neighbourhood is similar to a college town with lots of small shops, record stores, used clothes, collectibles, cafés, bars and restaurants. There are also many live houses or tiny music venues that are usually in basements where indie and punk bands play. A lot of foreign touring indie and punk bands usually make Shimokitazawa a stop. Shimokitazawa Station on the Odakyu and Inokashira Lines
4. Koenji
I'd describe it the same way as Shimokitazawa, but with fewer tiny streets, more tattoo shops and fewer live houses. It's popular with a younger crowd. There are lots of small shops, used clothing stores and record stores. It's a great place to take a stroll and do some window shopping. The restaurants along some of the side streets have a very unique vibe. Koenji Station on the Chuo Line, a stop from Nakano Station
5. Let yourself get lost
The best part about Tokyo is there's always something new to find. Just pick a station or neighbourhood and walk. You'll be sure to find something new and interesting, such as hidden temples or shrines, small shops, cafés and parks. Public transportation is everywhere so even if you get lost, you're certain to find a way to get where you need to go. So go out and explore.

50 Facts About Japan
Get 2 months free with Skillshare:
Lists of facts about Japan are almost always half misleading or straight up inaccurate, and half basic facts that everyone already knows. (Did you know JAPANESE VENDING MACHINES?!) So we've been trying to collect interesting facts about Japan that are actually true for years, and we finally reached 50!
This video took the most time to make out of all our videos so far--more than 250 hours!! We put weeks into researching facts, tossing ones that either weren't true or as interesting as we first thought, and verifying the necessary ones with statistics from official sources (do you know the pain… of trying to translate 100+ page government reports…). Those sources are in the description box. We called agencies to ask them questions directly. We visited museums. We drove all over the place and filmed a lot of B roll (oh so much B roll). So here it is, basically everything we know about Japan (well, maybe not everything). Some of you may recognize a couple facts in here that we've talked about in past videos! I really hope you guys enjoy this video!!
Thank you so much to all the people who upload images, sounds and EVEN VIDEO OF A RARE CAT HOLY CRAP to Wikipedia!! You’re the real MVP. There were a lot of things there was little possibility of us ever being able to capture on film ourselves. Thank you to you guys for being patient with us as we take our sweet time making these videos. And thank you to Skillshare for sponsoring this and helping us pay for groceries while we spent an entire month working on a single video. orz
