Travelogue in Japan, Nikkō Utsunomiya Road, volume 48
Nikkō Utsunomiya Road
The road is the main access route for Nikkō, a popular getaway for tourists in the north of Tochigi. It connects directly to the Tōhoku Expressway which leads to the greater Tokyo area.
The road is officially designated as a bypass for National Route 119 (Utsunomiya Interchange to Nikkō Interchange) and National Route 120 (Nikkō Interchange to Kiyotaki Interchange). The road is designated for motor vehicles only. The design standard of the road is similar to most national expressways in Japan.
The first section of the road was opened to traffic in 1976 and the entire route was completed in 1981.
The Cedar Avenue of Nikkō (日光杉並木 Nikkō suginami-ki?) is a street in Japan lined with approximately 13,000 cryptomeria trees, known as Sugi, the national tree of Japan. Consisting of three parts converging on the city of Imaichi, the Cedar Avenue of Nikkō is 35.41 kilometers long[1] and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest tree-lined avenue in the world. The Cedar Avenue of Nikkō is the only cultural property designated by the Japanese Government as both a Special Historic Site and a Special Natural Monument.
Cedar Avenue of Nikkō
The cedar trees were planted approximately 400 years ago by Matsudaira Masatsuna, a feudal lord serving Tokugawa Ieyasu, who donated them to the Nikkō Tōshō-gū. This monumental project was begun around 1625 and required about 20 years to be completed. It is estimated that some 200,000 cedars were planted at this time.

The capital of Tochigi Prefecture, Utsunomiya City (Utsunomiya-shi/宇都宮市) is located 100 kilometers north of Tokyo and is easily accessed by bullet train or highway. The cultural, political and economic center of the prefecture is home to about 440,000 people. Within the city, Romantic Mura features a local brewery where you can enjoy a beer, and a hot spring.
Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park (Utunomiya Jyoshi Koen)
Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park is the site of the former Utsunomiya Castle and currently a city rest area. The majority of the Utsunomiya Castle building was burnt down during the Boshin War. During the Edo Period, it was an important point for the northern Kanto area that included the Tohoku region and Nikko. Utsunomiya Castle, which once boasted of magnificence, is now a ruin castle park, an oasis in the city that is cherished by the local citizens. Utsunomiya Castle is named as one of the Seven Great Kanto Castles and is famous as the place where the shogun stayed when he visited Nikko. Most of Utsunomiya Castle was burned down during the Boshin war. The current reconstructions were completed in 2007. The site is host to approximately 120 cherry trees of 4 different varieties which bloom at different times allowing visitors to enjoy a longer than normal cherry blossom season.

Travelogue in Japan, Utsunomiya Futaarayama Shrine, volume 55
Utsunomiya Futaarayama Shrine (Futaarayama Jinja)/ Futarasan hall
The shrine has a long history : founded about 1,600 years ago to dedicate the spirit of Toyokirihikonomikoto, the founder of Utsunomiya. People say the name of Utsunomiya is derived from Shimotsuke-Ichinomiya. The City of Utsunomiya has grown and prospered around Futaarayama Woods, and Futaarayama Shrine has been the spiritual center of the daily life of the citizens of Utsunomiya to date. People visit and pray on occasions like New Year’s Day and Shichigosan(the gala day for children of three, five and seven years of age). Students go there to ask for help in their entrance examinations. The gate and approach to the shrine are beautifully illuminated at night. Note that about Futarasan Shrine (Futarasan Jinja) is that it’s not related to its more famous neighbor Futarasan Shrine in nearby Nikko. One is written 二荒山; the other is written 二荒山. Tennou Festival is held from July 15th to 20th The festival of Suga Shrine located in the compound of Futaarayama Shrine is held annually in July. Wedding Ceremonies and Kikusui Festival is held on the last Saturday and Sunday of October This is the main festival of Futaarayama Shrine.
