A former underground quarry is a home to the Oya History Museum. Utsunomiya Museum of Art exhibits works by Chagall, Klee and other modernists.

HUGE FLOATING HEAD! Japan’s giant floating balloon art installation of a middle-aged man’s head
On Dec. 21st, a floating head of a middle-aged man appeared in the skies above the city of Utsunomiya, which is located approximately 60 miles to the north of Tokyo.
This is actually the latest art installation by a group called “Me” which means ‘eye’ or ‘eyes’ in Japanese and courtesy of the Utsunomiya Museum of Art.
The group had set up a booth to photograph people and out of the 218 photos taken, Haruka Kojin, a member of the group “Me” chose this one, because it resembled a man she’d met in a dream once.
The balloon installation measures almost 50 feet in length and 23 feet in width.
The art collective spent 2 months painstakingly painting over 67,000 dots on the balloon to create the pointilist portrait, giving it a slightly comic book effect.
Another eerie or artistic addition is that the disembodied head also glows at night.

Hip Hop Night at The Nest Utsunomiya Japan
What is this you speak of...Hip hop in Japan?!? Why yes. Actually hip hop is one of the more popular non native Japanese forms of music here. Many small towns here have at least one night dedicated to the B-boy bass. For the most part they still DJ mostly American beats ... a lot of Cyprus hill, house of pain, Big, pac, etc. but when it comes to live hip hop the Japanese have a huge scene full of up and coming rappers, and vocalists that are all about Japanese lyrics and US influenced 90s beats. Not familiar with the singer in this clip or any of the other groups that performed that night but it was interesting to see the Japanese take on American hip hop.
