Uusikaupunki Finland
In 1721, the Peace of Nystad was signed in Uusikaupunki, ending the wars between Sweden and Russia.
The original name of the main village that was incorporated into Uusikaupunki was Kalainen (which is a Finnish adjective meaning having plenty of fish). The village of Kalainen originated as a market place for the people of Vakka-Suomi. The town of Uusikaupunki was founded as a town with the rights of commerce in 1617 by decree by Gustav II Adolf.
Up to the 19th century it was an important port for commerce and fishing, and up to the latter half of the 20th century it still retained an important ship building industry

Aulis Sallinen VARIAZIONI PER ORGANO op. 104 - Kalevi Kiviniemi - WORLD PREMIERE
©KALEVI KIVINIEMI
This WORLD PREMIERE played by Finnish concert organist KALEVI KIVINIEMI in New Church Uusikaupunki, FINLAND, at 27th July 2015.
Aulis Sallinen (1935-):
VARIAZIONI PER ORGANO (Muunnelmi uruil) opus 104 (2014).
Vuonna 1970 kirjoitin ensimmäisen sävellykseni uruille. Chaconne-niminen kappale esitettiin Uudenkaupungin uudessa kirkossa J.A.
Minua tarkalleen 70 vuotta vanhempien urkujen parvelta näen itseni edelleenkin seisomassa kirkon alttarin edessä 15-vuotiaan mustassa rippipuvussa, kaltaisteni joukossa.
Näiden kahden urkuteoksen, joiden etäisyys toisistaan on lähes puoli vuosisataa, väliin mahtuu toki muitakin tälle jättiläis-soittimelle kirjoitettuja sävellyksiä.
Helmikuulla 2015, Aulis Sallinen
I composed my first piece for the organ in 1970. Chaconne was performed in the new church of Uusikaupunki, Finland.
Now that Crusell Music Festival and Parish of Uusikaupunki have commissioned a composition to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Marcussen organ, now familiar to me, I feel the circle close. Looking down from the loft of the organ that is exactly 70 years older than me, I can still see myself, a 15-year-old boy in a black confirmation suit, standing in front of the altar, among my peers.
The time span between the two compositions holds nearly fifty years, and, naturally, many other pieces written for this monumental instrument. The godfather of that music is Kalevi Kiviniemi, the wizard of organ playing. His skill and personality have inspired me to write this piece, and I consider myself privileged to have him perform the premiere of the composition whose name “variazioni” stands for the foreign, and “muunnelmi, in turn, represents my old education town.

Finland Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Finland.
Finland is a land of a thousand lakes and eternal forests, a land of log cabins and Orthodox churches - a midsummer’s dream in the extreme north of Europe.Helsinki, ‘The Daughter of the Baltic’, ‘The Gibraltar of the North’, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king, Gustav Vasa, as a trading centre, in 1812 Tsar Alexander The First made it the capital of the Principality Of Finland. Turku is the oldest city in Finland and is the country’s first capital city from where Finnish culture was born. It is still evocative of the Middle Ages. The sea, a magnificent island landscape and picturesque timber houses are typical of one of the oldest cities in the Gulf Of Bothnia, Uusikaupunki. It was there in 1712 that a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Sweden and this small, quiet town has a long maritime history. Further north is a town of seafarers and traders, Kokkola, of which the old town boasts the largest number of timber built houses in Finland. The cleric, Anders Chydenius, once lived here and laid the foundation of Liberalism, the freedom of both religion and trade. Oulu is the flourishing centre of Northern Finland. Along with its many green areas this city by the sea comes alive during the spring and summer months. Despite the harsh climate, tropical plants are popular in the city. The hilly landscape of the spacious Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border. Yellow-green reindeer moss and dense layers of many other varieties grow on the seemingly endless hills of primeval stone and gneiss. The plant life of this region always surprises those who encounter it for the first time. Finland is a country that boasts more lakes than any other. It is full of picturesque, natural beauty, unique cultural treasures and historic locations: a tranquil paradise set in the extreme north.

Midsummer Night 2014 in Finland
Coming home from Israel Houghton's concert in Central Finland...
This scenery is very typical for Finnish summer nights - they're not very dark in these latitudes, you know :) This night it was cloudy and rainy, though, and the focus of my Iphone was a bit lost - sorry for the blurry beginning...
Oh btw, guess how much is the clock in the end of the video?

You're right. It's around 2.00 AM. :D

History Of Finland
The '''history of Finland''' began around 9000 BC with the end of the end of the last glacial period. The area has been inhabited since. Most important Stone Age cultures were Kunda, Comb Ceramic, Corded Ware, Kiukainen and Pöljä cultures. Finnish Bronze Age started approximately 1500 BC and the Iron Age from approximately 500 BC and lasted until 1300 AD. Finnish Iron Age cultures can be separated to Finnish proper, Tavastian and Karelian cultures. Due to the Northern Crusades and Swedish colonisation of some Finnish coastal areas most of the region became a part of the Kingdom of Sweden and the realm of the Catholic Church from the 13th century onwards. After the Finnish War in 1809 vast majority of the Finnish-speaking areas of Sweden were ceded to the Russian Empire ( excluding the areas of the modern-day Northern Sweden where Meänkieli dialects of Finnish are spoken ) , making this area the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. The Lutheran religion dominated. Finnish nationalism emerged in the 19th century. It focused on Finnish cultural traditions, folklore and mythology, including music and especially the highly distinctive language and lyrics associated with it. One product of this era was the Kalevala, one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. The catastrophic Finnish famine of 1866–1868 was followed by eased economic regulations and extensive emigration.
