Uwajima Castle in Cherry Blossom Season, Ehime ???? 宇和島城 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Uwajima Castle is one of the twelve surviving original castles in Japan with huge stone ramparts - the detail is truly astonishing.
All the other castles you will see in Japan are reconstructed fakes replacing the originals which were destroyed by fire, war or dismantled by the Meiji government. Uwajima Castle is also called Tsurushima or Uwajimajo and was constructed in 1596. Its main gate suffered damage during WW2 but otherwise the castle is as it was in centuries past. One of the most striking characteristics is for such a far flung hilltop castle its high stone ramparts which show an incredible amount of labor to make the fortress safe.
The Japanese government has listed Uwajima Castle as an official Important Cultural Property.

Uwajima Castle, located in Uwajima city Ehime, is one of only twelve original castles that survive intact from the Edo Period (1603-1867). Built around 1596 by the daimyo Todo Takatora and later refurbished in 1615 by the Date clan, Uwajima Castle was the pinnacle of the Date family until the end of the Edo period. Uwajima Castle is also known locally as Tsurushima-jō.

Uwajima Castle (宇和島城, Uwajimajō) is one of only twelve original castles that survive intact from the Edo Period (1603-1867). The small but atmospheric castle was built around the turn of the 17th century and was later furbished up when the Date family took over ownership in 1615. The Date clan continued to rule Uwajima from Uwajima Castle through the Edo Period. The castle stands on a hill which was located just by the sea in the past, but land reclamation along the coast has resulted in it standing further inland today.
Visitors can approach the castle's keep starting from the north or south. The each route travel uphill on flights of stone steps meandering past moss covered stone walls and leading through the forest, which consists of an interesting variety of vegetation. About halfway up the hill along the northern approach stands the Yamazato Soko(山里倉庫), a storehouse built relatively recently in 1845. The structure now serves as a small museum, exhibiting festival props, craft tools, an old rickshaw and other items.
After a 10-15 minute climb, visitors will reach the castle's three storied main keep at the hill's flat-topped summit. The keep's genuine wooden interior is well-preserved, and climbing up two floors worth of steep wooden stairs to the top floor rewards visitors with nice views over Uwajima City. There are some exhibits within the main keep, such as armors and swords belonging to past feudal lords, besides portraits of them.

The northern trailhead to Uwajima Castle can be reached in a 10-15 minute walk from Uwajima Station. From there, it takes an additional 10-15 minutes to climb up the hill and get to the main keep.

Japanese Penis Shrine: Taga Shrine, Uwajima Ehime ❤ 多賀神社●愛媛県宇和島市 ❤ Japan As It Truly Is
And now for something TOTALLY different. The Japanese Penis Shrine or Taga Jinja, has a unique experience waiting for you.
It's in the very back corner of the country, in Uwajima City, Ehime. There used to be many more of these places, but western cultural mores polluted most out of existence. There are still a few like this one, plus some big festivals like the Honen Matsuri in Aichi every March or Kanamara Matsuri in Kawasaki every February.
It's important to note here that this has NOTHING to do with lust or lewd behavior - actually it is a symbol of fertility and good harvest in traditional Japan. (That said, they did put the Dekoboko Sex Museum right next to it - no photos allowed).
Entrance is free and it is remarkably quiet - way off the beaten path, with few if any tourists. Note that you might have to see this video several times to catch all the imagery placed in it.

宇和島城(Uwajima castle)@愛媛~日本100名城~
2018.8.24@愛媛県宇和島市(Uwajima,Ehime)
