Te Anau town, Bus trip to Milford sound
Bus trip to Milford sound, New Zealand
It was our third day in Queenstown, we planned to visit Milford sound. Milford sound is one of most beautiful and iconic places in New Zealand. It is the wettest place in NZ, and it rains for about 200 days a year.
We got up early and caught the coach at 7am. It tool five and a half hours to get there, on the way the driver stopped by some locations and allowed us to take pictures. The driver is very friendly and provides a lot of information..
The cruise to the Milford sound is one hour and forty five minutes. The weather was raining but because of this, more waterfalls formed so the sight was spectacular. The boat went underneath the waterfall and we got really wet. This was an unforgettable trip to Milford Sound.
The information below is from the website
Situated on the west coast of the South Island, Milford Sound is a fusion of spectacular natural features with amazing visual cues around every corner.'
Described by Rudyard Kipling as the 'eighth wonder of the world', Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during the ice ages. Breathtaking in any weather, the fiord's cliffs rise vertically from the dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and waterfalls cascade downwards from as high as 1000 metres. When it rains in Milford Sound, and it often does, those waterfalls multiply with magnificent effect.

TRIP OF A LIFETIME | Milford Sound New Zealand
This week we were fortunate enough to explore one of the most amazing places on this earth.
Deep on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island you will find the beautiful Milford Sound. The true scale of the landscape that surrounds you on the drive into Milford is absolutely mind blowing. To finish of our evening we booked a ride on the Mitre Peak Cruise, were we saw some of the worlds most amazing waterfalls, as we cruised out to the entrance of the Tasman Sea.
We hope you enjoy our take on Milford Sound, we highly recommend put the journey on your bucketlist, and while your there make sure to see the crew on the Mitre Peak Cruise for an awesome experience.

Best Milford Sound Cruise New Zealand! (Gorgeous scenery, waterfalls, fur seals, and dolphins!!)
During our trip to New Zealand in February 2017, we went on a day trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound with Cruise Milford and absolutely loved the experience! We hopped on their glass rooftop bus and headed towards the long winding roads towards Milford Sound. Our bus driver told us we were very fortunate to have such a gorgeous sunny day outside since it usually rains 200 out of the 365 days here! With such great weather, the one-hour cruise ride was absolutely beautiful! We saw waterfalls, fur seals, and even dolphins! Our bus driver told us that there's usually a 20% chance people will get to see dolphins...so we were indeed very lucky! Overall, our family had a lot of fun and would definitely recommend this day trip to anyone!

Milford Sound cruise...Fiordland National Park, New Zealand
Milford Sound gets 250 inches of rain per year, so a sunny day like this is a rare treat. 5/19/19. #MilfordSound #FiordlandNationalPark #NewZealand #MitrePeak
Exploring Milford Sound
020 - Milford Sound and Fiorland
So is it worth the hype?
In short yes, but it depends when you go.
As soon as you arrive in Queenstown there are fliers for Milford Sound everywhere. It is about a 5-6 hour bus journey from Queenstown (4 and a half hours in the Car). Boat trips to cruise the fiord start at around $45 dollars with the cheaper companies (for cruise alone) and peak at around $180 (for bus and cruise). Helicopter and plane trips are another way to explore Milford Sound but from Queenstown it can cost about $400 for an hours trip. You can also Kayak at the Fiord and these trips start at around $130.
My best piece of advice, go when the weather is predicted to be good. It sounds simple but that is quite a difficult task for this area of New Zealand. The scenery during the boat cruise is amazing but if the cloud is low then you will miss it! I spoke to a couple of boys who saved up for a trip to Milford Sound but ended up going on a cloudy wet day and didn’t get to see any of the breath taking views.
The drive to Milford Sound from Te Anau is also one of the most stunning in New Zealand. We left Te Anau at 6am (you will see in the above video that I look a little sleepy) just as the sun was beginning to rise and we were treated to a camper van free road, clear skies and a couple of cloud inversions. It was absolutely stunning. There is also a ridiculous tunnel that you have to go through to get to Milford Sound. It is 1.2km long and cuts straight through a steep mountain leaving those with an over active imagination a little breathless.
I would suggest not spending over $45 for one of the Milford Sound Cruises. There are a number of different companies who offer these cruises. Some of the more expensive boats claim they get closer to the waterfalls but they really don't so save your pennies! We went with Go Orange and got a tasty bacon roll and an orange juice onboard which went nicely with the incredible views.
In summary, Milford Sound is an amazing place but try to go when the weather is nice and don’t be tricked into paying more money than necessary!

Must See Sights along Milford Sound Route
The driving route from Te Anau to Milford Sound is about 120km each way but we took 2 full days to cover it. There are too many places to stop and the beauty of the place is beholding. Some of my favourite places
1. Sunset at Milford Sound Foreshore. As the tide was very low, we could walk right up to the foreshore and observe the life of driftwood and pebbles that were otherwise submerged.
2. Hollyford Track. This is the only turnoff on this road, but it uncovered so many gems. Gunns Camp: We had a lovely chat with the owner's wife and you get to walk around the campsite and have a chuckle at the owner's sense of humour. Moraline Creek: It is tucked away along the gravel road, but you wouldn't wanna miss this precarious bridge.
3. The Chasm. The name itself says it all. Get mesmerised by the turquoise water funnelling through a narrow chasm that sculpted the rocks around it. Could stare at it the whole day.
4. Homer Tunnel. Built by manual labourers in the 1930s, you wonder how they managed as it pierces through a solid mountain. As you exit, it opens into a windy hairpin road down the cliff face. This reminded us of the Trollstigen Road in Norway, except we had better visibility this time. =)
5. All the mossy rainforest.
Oh yes, the popular choice is to spend a couple of hours herded into a cruise ship with a million people and pay big bucks to get close to the fjords. We didn't do that, but for a couple of hundred bucks you can.

Aboard the Milford Sovereign on the Milford Sound watching the waterfalls.
Touring the South Island of New Zealand in our Jucy camper, we spent a few days in Te Anau where we booked to go to Milford Sound with VIP Milford. Once aboard the Milford Sovereign we were on our way around this amazing place, a World Heritage Site and highly recommend place to visit when in New Zealand. Even the Dolphins made an appearance and swam along side the boat which is quite rare. Luckily it was a good day and we got the chance to get a close as we could to theis amazing waterfall. Definitely recommend this trip if you are ever in NZ
