Trains at the new Footscray station - Melbourne Transport
In this video we see some trains at Footscray, a major station in Melbourne's western suburbs serving as the junction for the Sunbury and Werribee/Williamstown lines as well as V/Line trains on the Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong lines. The station at Footscray is very modern; having undergone a major upgrade as part of the Regional Rail Link project, which saw the construction of two new platforms, an extended footbridge, accessibility upgrades, extra seating and shelters and refurbishment of the existing heritage buildings. The upgrades were completed in 2014.
Footscray is the seventh busiest station in Melbourne with over 3.7 million passenger movements in 2013/14. The station serves the bustling Footscray CBD area which includes various shops, markets and cafe's, and Victoria University's Footscray Nicholson campus. It also serves as a major tram and bus interchange in the region; offering connections to Victoria University's Footscray Park campus, Highpoint Shopping Centre and other surrounding suburbs.
We start the video from platforms 2 & 3 where we see a variety of Metro Siemens, Comeng and X'trapolis EMU's and a number of V/Line DMU's. The city end of platform 3 gives a great view of the Regional Rail Link and the Werribee/Williamstown line tracks. We then head down to the down end of platform 4 where we see some Sunbury line trains and other V/Line trains arrive and depart the station. We then head off to platforms 5 & 6 where we see some Werribee and Williamstown line trains.

Emerge in the West 2015
Presented by Multicultural Arts Victoria in partnership with the Maribyrnong City Council Festival City Program, Emerge in the West 2015 saw Footscray’s Nicholson Street come alive on Saturday 16 May from 1pm-7pm with some of the West’s top emerging talent in music, art, fashion, dance, circus and spoken word across two stages alongside craft workshops, gastronomic experiences and special offers on the day from traders in the street from textile shops to iconic restaurants and beauty salons. VU at MetroWest hosted the book launch for “Curfew’s Children” by esteemed poet, playwright and novelist Kabu Okai-Davies, presented by the Afro-Australian Student Organisation (AASO).
Building on the growing number of emerging artists and cultural entrepreneurs involved in Emerge in the West since 2011, MAV partnered with AAMEYS (African Australian Multicultural Employment and Youth Services) and the African Think Tank to invite 25 successful small business owners of African heritage to establish the first small business association in Australia for Africans in 2014. Atakilty Woreita with MAV’s Artistic Program Manager and Founder of the Emerge Festivals Anita Larkin lead two guided Walking Tours to the diverse traders on Nicholson Street.
A huge thanks goes out to the amazing artists and community members who made the festival a success.
Supported by: Maribyrnong City Council, Creative Victoria, Afro-Australian Student Organisation (AASO), VIctoria University @ Metro West and The African Australian Small Business Association (AASBA).
Emerge in the West 2016
Presented by Multicultural Arts Victoria in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council Festival City Program, Emerge in the West was back bringing Footscray’s Nicholson Street alive on Saturday 4 June from 1pm-6pm with some of the West’s top emerging talent in music, art, fashion, dance and spoken word across three stages, an expanded craft market and special offers from the local traders for the day.
Powerful Aboriginal didgeridoo collaborators with African Star Dance & Drumming, alongside Hakka by Te Whare Tutaua O Te Hononga Ki Wikitoria opened the 2016 Festival. On Nicholson Street, the main stage featured the Abyei Sudanese Band, a new Majestic Vietnamese band and dance group, afro beats by Alariiya, the Eritrean Snit Band, reggae and roots by Rasta Unity, dynamic percussion and dance by Asanti Dance Theatre, and an impressive finale featuring Melbourne’s inimitable Ethio-jazz maestros JAzmaris alongside Nhatty Man and his new band Gara, Seble Girma and the iconic Bitsat Seyoum.
The main stage acts alternated with the street’s second stage featuring an Afro Chic Fashion Show, Kids’ traditional African dance performance, Ba’hal Ethiopian traditional dance and workshops, and new talent in “All You Can Spit” Youth MC Project. In addition to these interactive performances and dance workshops, the street was filled with art and craft stalls offering a range of craft activities, kids’ tribal jewellery workshops and face painting for kids.
This year audiences were also invited to win a trophy in a pool (billiards) competition at Welwalo Café. Art and craft experiences continued inside Victoria University’s iconic MetroWest venue in the middle of Nicholson Street. VU at MetroWest hosted weaving demonstrations from 1pm to 5pm by PNG Bilum artist Vicki Kinnai, a textile exhibition, a special afternoon of spoken word and jazz with local musicians, Soreti Kadir and “Words on the West” poets, a pop up shop of local fashion, jewellery and accessories in an Afro Chic Boutique coordinated by Vissolela Ndenzako, and a Winter Craft Market of handmade treasures by “Creating a Welcome” program by Anna Branford. Every item was made by a creator keen to use crafty skills to support those seeking asylum in Australia and included knitted and crocheted winter woollies, soft toys and dolls, prints, jewellery and much more, with every cent raised to be donated to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
Building on insights and new traders in Footscray, AASBA representative Berhan Jabar led two guided Cultural Walking Tours to the local traders spanning rare textiles, unique Ethiopian pool (billiards), original African hair art and popular local Eritrean/Ethiopian restaurants and more. #emergeinthewest
