C of C 3-3-12 Vachel Lindsay: Poet, Tramp and Favorite Son of Illinois
Meeting # 3,158 - Lecture and reading by journalist/poet/folksinger Job Conger of Springfield, Illinois, author and publisher of Vachel Lindsay, Strange Gold, a concise biography and compendium of his poems and Lindsay lore.
Springfield, IL, is the birthplace and long-time home of American poet Vachel Lindsay (1879 - 1931, who became famous in the early part of the 20th Century for his unique style of poetry. He is considered the father of modern singing poetry, as he referred to it, in which verses are meant to be sung or chanted. His extensive correspondence with the poet Yeats details his intentions to revive the musical qualities in poetry as had been practiced by the ancient Greeks.
Because of his identity as a performance artist and his use of American Midwest themes, Lindsay became known in the 1910s as the Prairie Troubador. For the final twenty years of his life, Lindsay was one of the best-known poets in America. His reputation was high enough to enable him to befriend, encourage, and mentor other poets, such as Langston Hughes and Sara Teasdale.

Lincoln Walks at Midnight Poem animation
Heres a virtual movie of the great American author and sometimes poet Mark Twain reading Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight by the later lyrical poet Vachel Lindsay. This poem written in 1914 which pays tribute to Abraham Lincoln America's celebrated 16th President who posterity has credited with bringing about the abolition of slavery in the United States after a bitter civil war bemoans a world at the time still wracked by war in the early throws of the first world war (1914 - 1918) .It is only tby virtue of that time travel portal of vitual moviemaking that Mark Twain who actualy died in 1910 can be seen reading this monumental poem written some 4 years after his passing. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 April 21, 1910),[3] well-known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. Twain is noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), which has been called the Great American Novel,[4] and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). He is extensively quoted.[5][6] Twain was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain was very popular, and his keen wit and incisive satire earned praise from both critics and peers. Upon his death he was lauded as the greatest American humorist of his age,[7] and William Faulkner called Twain the father of American literature.[8] Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (November 10, 1879 December 5, 1931) was an American poet. He is considered the father of modern singing poetry, as he referred to it, in which verses are meant to be sung or chanted. His numerous correspondences with the poet Yeats detail his intentions to revive the musical qualities in poetry as had been practiced by the ancient Greeks. Because of his use of American Midwest themes he also became known as the Prairie Troubador.

Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight.........
In Springfield, Illinois IT is portentious, and a thing of state That here at midnight, in our little town A mourning figure walks, and will not rest, Near the old court-house, pacing up and down. Or by his homestead, or by shadowed yards He lingers where his children used to play, Or through the market, on the well-worn stones He stalks until the dawn-stars burn away. A bronzed, lank man! His suit of ancient black, A famous high top-hat, and plain worn shawl Make him the quaint, great figure that men love, The prairie-lawyer, master of us all. He cannot sleep upon his hillside now. He is among us:--as in times before! And we who toss or lie awake for long Breathe deep, and start, to see him pass the door. His head is bowed. He thinks on men and kings. Yea, when the sick world cries, how can he sleep? Too many peasants fight, they know not why, Too many homesteads in black terror weep. The sins of all the war-lords burn his heart. He sees the dreadnaughts scouring every main. He carries on his shawl-wrapped shoulders now The bitterness, the folly and the pain. He cannot rest until a spirit-dawn Shall come:--the shining hope of Europe free: The league of sober folk, the Workers' Earth, Bringing long peace to Cornland, Alp and Sea. It breaks his heart that kings must murder still, That all his hours of travail here for men Seem yet in vain. And who will bring white peace That he may sleep upon his hill again?
