A Visit to Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala (Ayurvedic) Museum Thrissur
India is a treasure-trove of ancient branches of human knowledge and Ayurveda is perhaps the most precious among them.As part of its multifarious ventures to enlighten the public about the rich heritage of this system, Vaidyaratnam is embarking on a novel project – Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum.The Museum, the first of its kind in the history of Ayurveda, narrates the story of evolution through a slew of media including artifacts, sculptures, scriptures and pictures. A 3D gallery is an added attraction to showcase the developments in the manufacturing of Ayurvedic medicines and treatment techniques evolved over the ages. Further, this will enable the visitor to appreciate how the continuity of tradition is preserved even in the contemporary scenario against the backdrop of technological innovations and modernization. The footnotes of each exhibit are self –explanatory and provide a wealth of information.

The evolution of Ayurveda heritage right from the mythological to the contemporary period
The classic treatment procedures of Ayurveda as well as the Kerala specialities which was followed in yester years and the initiatives to preserve and develop for the coming generations
A library comprising of a vast collection of literature and scriptures used by the ‘Ashtavaidyas’, including many ancient manuscripts
A digital library with a big CD collection based on Ayurveda and a Projector Conference Hall for audiovisual shows and presentations on Ayurveda
A picture gallery and a collection of more than 300 medicinal plants, also depicting their medicinal properties
A gallery providing detailed information about the ‘Ashtavaidya Eledath Thaikkattu Mooss’ family ancestry
The Museum owes much to the rich and varied collections of manuscripts, books and documents in the Library, an immortal contribution of the forebears of Ashtavaidyan Eledath Thaikkattu Moos family including Ashtavaidyan Vaidyaratnam E T Narayanan Mooss, Ashtavaidyan Padmashree E. T. Neelakandhan Mooss and also the present head of the Vaidyaratnam Group Ashtavaidyan Padmabhooshan E T Narayanan Mooss. The unique project is a tribute to these venerated supremos of Ayurveda.
Vaidyaratnam situates 50KMs from Kochi airport near Thrissur at Ollur, Thaikkattussery 8 KMs from Thrissur.

The Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum is situated at Thaikkattussery, near Ollur in Thrissur District. Visitors interested in the legacy of Ayurveda passed down from generation to generation can observe the same here.The museum is housed in an old traditional spacious two stored main building. The main Museum has separate galleries with presentations about the history of Ayurveda from mythological, Vedic, Sahitha, Sangraha, Medieval period, along with displays on Kerala’s Ayurveda tradition. The museum also has a 3D gallery for traditional education, treatments, medicine manufacturing and its present developments, a library with a massive collection of ancient scripts and texts used by Ashtavaidyas and a Multimedia Touch Screen digital Library with a large collection of videos of Kerala Ayurvedic treatments and digital palm leaf manuscripts.
The audio-visual theatre, depicting the origin, growth and development of Ayurveda with a facility to accommodate 40 persons at a time is undoubtedly the show-stopper of the museum. There are also exhibits manifesting the facts and myths associated with the history of Ayurveda. Moreover, the museum building itself is a 100 years old, a symbol of the rich architectural heritage of Kerala. The richness, the variety and the evolution of Ayurveda in India is perfectly enshrined here.

Kerala's traditional wisdom in healthcare to a great extent is based on the principles of Ayurveda. Making a strong come back in the modern era, Ayurveda has more takers than ever before. This age-old healthcare tradition used to be preserved and passed on to successive generations orally and in the form of manuscripts. These days, in Kerala, Ayurveda is also taught at the university level.

The Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum is situated at Thaikkattussery, near Ollur in Thrissur District of Kerala, India. The foundation stone for the museum was laid by Matha Amruthanandamayi on 12 April 2005 and opened to the public by the former president of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on 27 December 2013. The museum is also a memorial of the Centenary celebrations of the founder of Vaidyaratnam, Sri. E. T. Neelakandan Mooss, who himself is a living legend of Ayurveda in India.
Home to a priceless collection of many millennia old texts in Ayurveda, the exhibits in this museum include diorama presentation of the history of Ayurveda from Mythological,Vedic,Samhitha, Sangraha period, a library of texts describing the various branches of Ayurveda, an exclusive section on Sushrutha -- the father of surgery, whose Sushruta Samhita is one of the corner stones of Ayurvedic discipline, a picture and 3D gallery that displaying of old and new education, treatments and medicine making methods of Ayurveda and a Nalukettu-traditional kerala home with courtyard displaying antique collections of century old artefact and photos .
Kayachikitsa (general medicine), Balachikitsa (paediatrics), Graha Chikitsa (psychiatry),Oordhvanga Chikitsa (ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngiology), Salya Chikitsa (surgery), Damshtra Chikitsa (clinical toxicology), Jara Chikitsa (rejuvenation therapy) and Vrusha Chikitsa(reproductive medicine) -- the various branches of Ayurveda are displayed in exhaustive detail.
The museum hosts a library of ancient literature, scriptures and manuscripts on traditional Ayurveda, which includes the ones employed by the Ashtavaidyas (physicians who were prominent in eight branches of of Ayurveda keeping Ashtangahridayam as their basic text)that practiced Ayurveda. The digital library with a huge collection of ancient manuscripts and video presentations of kerala traditional Ayurvedic treatments is another attraction of this museum. There are exhibits manifesting the facts and myths associated with the history and evolution of Ayurveda. The various modalities observed during the yesteryears of Ayurveda and the contemporary period spring to life here. But the audio-visual theatre, depicting the origin, growth and development of Ayurveda with a facility to accommodate 40 persons at a time is undoubtedly the show-stopper.

A rare video of Padmasree Ashtavaidyan E.T.Neelakandhan Mooss.from1987
Sri .E.T. Neelakandan Mooss hailed from the Eledath Thaikkattu Mooss family of Thaikkattussery, Thrissur. His father Sri Narayanan Mooss was a renowned practitioner and was bestowed the title Vaidyaratnam by the then Viceroy of India. Sri Neelakandan Mooss took to Ayurveda and started the Vaidyaratnam Oushadhashala in 1941. In his continued efforts to enhance the reach of Ayurveda, he founded the Vaidyaratnam Nursing Home, Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College and Ayurvedic Research Centre. Under his sustained efforts, Vaidyaratnam Group soon became a celebrated tradition in the history of Ayurveda. He was honoured with the prestigious national award, Padmashree by the Government of India in the year 1992.
