The Vaikom Mahadeva temple (വൈക്കം മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം) ,in Kottayam district of Kerala, is one of the few temples which is held in reverence by both Shaivaites and the Vaishnavaites. Vaikom's Shiva is fondly called Vaikkathappan. The Shiva Linga here is believed to be from the 'Treta yuga' and considered as one of the oldest temples in Kerala where pooja has not been broken since inception. The Vaikom temple is famous for the Vaikom Ashtami, one of its main festivals, which is held in November--December.Vaikathashtami is celebrated on the day of Krishna Ashtami.It is the festival extents for 12 days. ഒരിക്കല്‍, ശിവലിംഗത്തിന്റെ അറ്റം കണ്ടെത്തിയതായി അസത്യം പറഞ്ഞ കുറ്റത്തിന് ഭഗവാന് ശിവന്‍ ബ്രഹ്മാവിന്റെ അഞ്ച് തലകളിലൊന്ന് വെട്ടിമാറ്റി. ഇതെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഭഗവാനെ ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യാപാപം ബാധിച്ചു. ഇത് പരിഹരിയ്ക്കാനായി അദ്ദേഹം ബ്രഹ്മാവിന്റെ തലയോട്ടിയും കയ്യിലേന്തിക്കൊണ്ട് പാര്‍വ്വതീദേവിയ്‌ക്കൊപ്പം നാടുമുഴുവന്‍ നടന്ന് ഭിക്ഷ യാചിച്ചു. പലരും ഭഗവാന് ഭിക്ഷയായി പലതും കൊടുത്തു. എന്നാല്‍, തലയോട്ടി നിറഞ്ഞാല്‍ അത് അപ്പോള്‍ത്തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹം ഭസ്മമാക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ, പന്ത്രണ്ടുവര്‍ഷം കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഭഗവാന് ദേവിയോടൊപ്പം ഇന്ന് ക്ഷേത്രമിരിയ്ക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തെത്തി. അപ്പോഴും തലയോട്ടി നിറഞ്ഞിരിയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍, പതിവിന് വിപരീതമായി ഭഗവാന്, തലയോട്ടി വയ്ക്കാമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ, ‘വയ്ക്കാം’ എന്ന പ്രയോഗമാണ് വൈക്കം ആയതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിച്ചുവരുന്നു.
