Madagascar Mantadia NP Andasibe أقصى 極端 चरम ekstrim
Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is a 155 square kilometre protected area consisting principally of primary growth forest in Alaotra-Mangoro Region in eastern Madagascar. The park's elevation ranges from 900-1250 meters, with a humid climate. Average annual precipitation is 1700 mm, with rainfall on 210 days of each year. This rainforest is habitat to a vast species biodiversity, including many endemic rare species and endangered species, including 11 lemur species. The park's two component parts are Mantadia National Park and Analamazoatra Reserve, which is best known for its population of Madagascar's largest lemur, the Indri.
This is one of the easiest parks in Madagascar to visit from the capital city, Antananarivo, with a 3-hour drive east on a paved road, Route Nacional 2 (RN 2). While Analamazaotra and park headquarters are short walks from Antsapanana on the RN 2, special transport must be arranged or hired from local hotels to reach Mantadia. Hikes ranging from 1-6 hours are typically available in both parts of the park. A local guide is required for visitors entering either part of the park.
The main threat to this park comes from the disappearance of adjoining habitat outside the park. This disappearance has been caused primarily by logging and replacement of rainforest with commercial Australian eucalyptus and Chinese pine forests, and to a lesser extent by slash-and-burn cultivation for rice agriculture, which is exacerbated by the extremely high population growth rate and poverty in rural Madagascar.
To address the disappearing habitat threat, reserves have been created in the vicinity of Andasibe-Mantadia that balance resource extraction with environmental protection, and attempt to create economic and environmentally preferable alternatives to replacing native forests with eucalyptus and pine.

Travel Notes:
- Filmed 18th-21st August 2017
- When you arrive at Ivato International Airport (Antananarivo), you will be hounded by a bevy of baggage porters. Do not feel obligated.
- In Antananarivo, we stayed at Hotel Relais de la Haute Ville. No complaints.
- Would not recommend walking around Haute Ville at night (not well lit). We were harassed and pick pocketed.
- Travelled between Antananarivo and Andasibe with Espace Mada Tours (Driver - Sheruf). Would recommend.
- Reserve Peyrieras was amazing, Chameleons right up close. You will see chameleons all over the place, but not with such variety in one spot. Had mixed feelings about some of the handling of the chameleons though.
- In Andasibe, we stayed in Analamazotra Hotel. Very unique pink huts.
- From what we could gather, the park area is split between two sections - Andasibe-Mantadia National Park and Analamazaotra Special Reserve.
- Andasibe-Mantadia National Park had very few people but the lemurs seemed harder to track down.
- Analamazaotra Special Reserve had indri lemur everywhere. There were more people here. See if you can ask your guide to track down some lemurs away from the crowds. Our guide, Daisy, was fantastic - he could make all manner of bird and lemur calls.
- Vakona Reserve was great in terms of the lemur interaction. However, I had mixed feelings about the fossa enclosure and the lemurs being stuck on the islands.
- Be sure to try Three Horses Beer, zebu steak and banana flambe.
- Madagascar is the home of vanilla - try to find some along the way.

Madagascar: Andasibe, Analamazaotra, Mantadia and Antananarivo. How to travel around?
How to travel Madagascar? This is my last video about traveling around Madagascar. After leaving Mahambo and passing by Tamatave we arrived in Andasibe! Andasibe is a small town where you can visit two major national parks: Analamazaotra and Mantadia. A perfect place to experience wildlife and all kind of lemurs: black and white lemur, brown lemur, the indri etc. We also visited the Vakona forest lodge where you can actually touch lemurs. They will jump on you, you can pet them and everything. Andasibe is quite touristy, there are greater spots to visit but it is also a must do in Madagascar!
Some quick facts about Andasibe:
-you pay 45.000 Ariary/per person for every day you want to enter the national parks
-Mantadia: 70.000 Ariary guide fee
-Analamazaotra: 50.000 Ariary guide fee
-Vakona forest lodge: 25.000 Ariary per person
costs for the driver (gmt+3):
-400 Euros for the car + driver (8 days)
-146 Euros for the petrol
total costs for the whole trip around Madagascar for 15 days: €1.935 / $2.065 per person

Visit Madagascar: Berenty Private Reserve Spiny Forest
There's more than just lemurs in Madagascar. This 4th largest island in the world is filled with other flora and fauna that have evolved and can be seen only here.
Take an easy walk through the stunning Spiny Forest with an amazing variety of exceptional trees and plants, such as Baobabs and Octopus Trees. That's right...Octopus trees.
Fact: There is nothing poisonous in Madagascar. Not a poisonous insect or snake anywhere on the island. Amazing!

Visit Madagascar: Don't Miss Berenty Private Reserve
Although we were lucky enough to miss the bone-jarring ride to Berenty by flying private, put it on your do not miss Madagascar list and prepare to take hundreds of lemur pictures. It's worth every pothole.

How can you dare to call this a reserve... Vakona (Madagascar) English version
How can you dare to call this a reserve ...
it's already quite absurd to put an animal in a cage/prison where he can not behave according to his own nature if you want to get to know him and his habits.
But it becomes a cruel non sense if the cage is small, with no shelter in case of rain (that falls daily in such areas), and its own natural habitat is only a few inches away.
It's a non sense also to write in the brochure things like By visiting the private reserve Vakona we' ll look for the Fossa (Cryptocropta ferox): RELAX! It won't take long ... It's always in his cage compulsively looking for a way to escape ...
In these images you can see the tour guide offering some meat to the poor fellow and taking it away when he realized that the tourists were more interested in watching free birds flying around instead.
Please note that the Vakona Private Reserve is located on the East Coast of Madagascar, 150 km away from the capital Antanarivo, it describes itself as a private reserve and nearby there is a comfortable lodge: that's why cheap tour operators, that don't check the quality of their offers, do propose to visit it.
My friends : a cage is always a cage even in the beautiful and fabulous Madagascar.
If you don't go to the Vakona in order to open that cage, go for a quality tourism and please avoid the Vakona.

Visit Lemur Island Madagascar: The Ultimate Destination
What a way to end a Madagascar adventure. Lemur Island is a private reserve that belongs to Vakona Forest Lodge but anyone can schedule a visit.
This last lemur video (if you are sick of them) is all about me, me, me... and Steve...and the cuter than cute lemurs.
Lemur Island is the ultimate in lemur viewing; totally unexpected and never to be forgotten.

Vakona forest lodge (Madagascar 2016)
On our 6 week tour of Madagascar in 2016, we visited the private park - Vacona Forest Lodge. The lodge is approximately 4 hours drive east of Antananarivo. There are good opportunities for accommodation in the area and even on site. The park and staff who take care of the animals offer amazing experiences, and the opportunity to get close to the naturally curious lemurs.
Visit Madagascar: The Lemurs of Andasibe National Park
Andasibe National Park is a protected rainforest area in eastern Madagascar and known for the Indri-indri, the largest lemur. A good guide is a must! Pop for the extra expense and hire a private guide instead of joining a group tour and observe silence when viewing! These lemurs, unlike those at Berenty Private Reserve, are shy.
