Mobilizer, Becky Smith, shows us snapshots from her time in Valemount, British Columbia!
Finding opportunities for northern communities
The Government of British Columbia is partnering with communities along the Barriere to McBride corridor in one of three regional economic development pilot projects as part of Canada Starts Here: The BC Jobs Plan.
The Regional Economic Investment Pilot is aimed at attracting investment, identifying opportunities, economic diversification and job creation in areas consistent with the BC Jobs Plan. On January 16, 2012, the Barriere to McBride corridor held a forum in Valemount, hosted by Pat Bell, the Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation. The pilot area corridor includes the traditional territory of the Simpcw First Nation, which has several ongoing business relationships with companies in forestry, mining and hydro power production.
These forums will include representatives from local government, business, industry, First Nations and education. Through sharing ideas on investment opportunities and overcoming barriers, an inventory of potential projects will be created, as well as an action plan detailing how the provincial government will assist communities to capitalize on opportunities.
The North Fraser communities of Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Mission were the first to participate in a forum and attracted over 100 participants. The Campbell River forum has been scheduled for Monday, Jan. 30, 2012. A decision on a fourth community, a First Nation, will be announced soon.

Valemount Live Ep 16 Part 1 BC Assessment Valemount.mp4
AM: Welcome the sixteenth episode of Valemount Live and first episode of this new decade of love peace and harmony.
Anchor Coulter Beeson is taking the night off, but I am joined by my able assistant Jody Newham. Welcome to the show Jody.
JN: Thanks Anne Marie, its a pleasure to be here. In this new decade of joy and love and harmony.
AM: How was your time off?
JN: Its hard to believe that weeks ago I was lost in the Mexican desert, living in a cave, eating bugs and twigs to survive. It really made me think about whats important in life.
AM: Hmm, I hadnt heard. (not really listening).
JN: I was doing a story on the Mexican Drug Wars and ended up in the crossfire.
AM: How nice. Now with the news. We have a decent to middling newscast for you today folks.
JN: Thats not true. Its actually quite good, but dont get used to it. Its hard to keep this pace up.
AM: We begin with a report on the assessed value of land in Valemount. Yes, despite no jobs, no industry and a black economic forecast, land values in our tiny village continue to rise, ensuring that anyone who wanted to live and work here could never afford a home.
JN: Also, we bring you a late breaking report on the robbery at the Valemount Pharmacy.
AM: A second break in! Thats outrageous.
JN: No, its the December 27 break in, but Andru asked me to play it up as if it were breaking news.
AM: We have a special tourism reporter who offers up a scathing critique of Valemounts Tourism offerings.
JN: Foreign correspondent Zachary Schneider submits his recent report from the southern resort continent that everybody is raving about, Antartica.
AM: And we have a fantastic documentary, crafter with the help of the Columbia Basin Trust about a local Painter, Musician, and composer David Norwell.
JN: But Lets begin with the most exciting. Lets talk about land values and their relationship to our taxes.
AM: Andru McCracken spoke to Lonny Miller Interim chief administrative officer at the village office to get a handle on how the assessed value of your home will affect your taxes, and what if any tax increases you can expect this year.
