Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

The Barking Stink: A Scented Heritage Project
How can we explore history through our sense of smell? Children from Barking and Dagenham used their noses to discover Barking’s pungent past.
The Barking Stink project is a scented heritage of Barking’s industrial past for children and young people. Produced by Thames Festival Trust, in partnership with Valence House Museum, the project explores the fragrant industries that existed alongside the River Roding. From Barking’s fishing trade to noxious fumes from factories, this innovative approach invited local children and young people to engage with Victorian London heritage using their senses and imagination.
This short film offers a taste (or should that be whiff) of the project that took place from March 2019 to December 2019. Featuring feedback from those involved including teachers, volunteers and oral history participants as well as Year 5 children from Monteagle Primary School. The project involved outdoor exhibitions, reminiscence sessions, archive research, animated films, schools workshops and scented facilitated visits to Valence House Museum in Barking and Dagenham.
This film features archive photographs from Valence House Museum and animated artwork by Josh Knowles and Chocolate Films. Graphic design by Helen Ralli. Exhibition curation by Jen Kavanagh and Thames Festival Trust. Film by Bluebird Pictures.
The project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to GreatArt. #thebarkingstink #london #riverthames #thamesfestivaltrust
