The railway line from Farranfore to Valentia harbour in Co Kerry.
Joan O'Sullivan reports on the line from Farranfore to Valentia harbour in Co Kerry.
The railway to Valencia Harbour was opened in 1893. It was the most westerly point in Europe which could be reached by train. The branch (of almost 40 miles in length) left the Tralee-Mallow main line at Farranfore and headed west through some of Ireland's most spectacular scenery as it climbed through County Kerry's mountainous countryside, along Dingle Bay's southern shore.

The Daniel O'Connell Church of the Holy Cross in the town is the only one in Ireland named after a lay person. It is situated on the slopes of Beentee from which I recorded this footage. You can also see the decommissioned Royal Irish Constabulary barracks (white building), now a heritage centre, which according to legend, was built from the plans for a British barracks in India that got mixed up (a very common myth that occurs in many Irish garrison towns). The Cahersiveen railway station was on the Great Southern and Western Railway which ran from Farranfore to Valentia Harbour in the Republic of Ireland (left bridge).
Cnoc na dTobar or Knocknadobar (right mountain in background) was a sacred pilgrim site in prehistoric and medieval times. The Pilgrim Path from the traditional start point near St Furze’s holy well is marked by 14 Stations of the Cross leading to an imposing Celtic Cross on the summit plateau that acts as the pilgrim destination.

Portmagee & Valentia Island on the Beautiful Iveragh peninsula - July 2019
We had a beautiful day here in County Kerry,Ireland so we decided to go for a drive to the Iveragh Peninsula and visit the stunning locations of Portmagee and Valentia Island (One of the most westerly points of Europe) Their is so much to see here and the scenery is so spectacular with beautiful cliff walks and boat trips. The most famous of all is a boat trip to the Skellig rock. Skellig Michael is known throughout the world of archaeology as the site of a well-preserved monastic outpost of the Early Christian period – now designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and of course in recent times a location for Star Wars in two of its movies. My video only barely scrape the surface of this magnificent location that one would have to visit the Iveragh Peninsula in person to appreciate it's true beauty.

Knightstown - Valentia Island - County Kerry - Ireland

Portmagee Regatta 2018 Seine Boat Race
Portmagee Regatta 2018, Seine Boat Race. Unfortunately the drones battery life didn't allow it to make it as far as the first bouy so that dramatic moments at that first bouy were sadly not captured. Once the drone made it back safely from the first flight, with a fresh battery we were able to capture the end of the race. Congrats to Sneem on a great win! Music is from the soundtrack for Blue Planet ll, makes for a relaxing viewing experience!
