Gimli Peak - Valhalla Provincial Park - Hiking the Kootenays
On May 23, 2019 I made the trip just outside of Slocan, B.C. to Valhalla Provincial Park. The goal was to attempt to reach the ridge just beneath Gimli Peak at 2773m/9100ft. With snow still on the ground for the entire hike, it was an adventure getting up there.
3.5 hrs up, 1.5 down. Lots of kick stepping on this one!
The FSR on the way in starts out in good shape, but quickly gets rough. By the end of it you'll be driving through plenty of cross ditches. You could make it in with a sedan, but I wouldn't bring mine in there; going home with an intact oil pan and transmission is always nice. A vehicle with some clearance and all terrain tires would be a good idea.

The peaks we scrambled up were Gimli (2806m) and Asgard (2825m), both via the east ridges/ledges.

Valhalla Park British Columbia
Valhalla Park is a non-motorized wilderness near Slocan, British Columbia. The park was designated March 3, 1983. The park was created to protect the diverse topography, majestic peaks and unique vegetation typical of the Selkirk Mountains.
Pictographs in the park are evidence of early native habitation in the region. It was not until the 1850's that prospectors and surveyors came into the area. Slocan Lake became a highway of commerce for early towns in the Kootenays and remnants of the logging flumes and other transportation routes may still be seen in the park.
This area protects the diverse topography, majestic peaks and unique vegetation typical of the Selkirk Mountains. The park is unique in its varying topography. Both Evans Lake and Beatrice Lake are uncommonly large for high elevation lakes in BC. Surrounding the lakes are numerous mountains with castellated peaks. As well as forests of western red cedar and western hemlock, the higher elevations contain sub-alpine and alpine vegetation.
A variety of wildlife exists, including the grizzly and black bear, mountain goat, mule and whitetail deer, cougar, Golden Eagle and Alpine Ptarmigan.

Valhalla Adventure 2019
Two hikes Steph and I did in Valhalla Provincial Park in the first week of July, including our close encounters with the normally elusive mountain goat. It felt like a major accomplishment to complete the Mt. Gimli hike as we were thwarted by a forest fire we encountered on the trail last summer (the day the park shut down). The journey up the mountain begins with a vehicle-punishing drive up a dirt road including crossing 75 deep water bars.

This 6 acre campground is in a quiet forested residential neighborhood. There may be other campers on the property and sharing the community space. The community building has a wood stove, sink, electricity, WIFI, and basic kitchen amenities. There are also picnic tables, hammocks, fire pits, and an outdoor shower and flush toilet. Nelson, Castlegar and Slocan Lake are all a 35 minute drive away.
It is beautiful land with nice big trees and very few mosquitoes. Its an off-highway, semi-dead-end, so its usually quite quiet except for squirrels. Wild turkeys and deer often wander through the property. Bats live in bat houses and a dog and 2 bee colonies are kept in a separate fenced area. The level gravel road access is approximately 1 km from the paved road.
There is no cell phone coverage here until you get to Crescent Valley (south) or Silverton (north). There may be other campers on the property. Smoking is allowed outside only. Extra guests will need to bring their own bedding or sleeping bags and pillows and may sleep in a hammock, vehicle, outside, or in their own tent. Supplies and services are available nearby including firewood, toiletries, dog day care, massage, bike and kayak rentals, life jackets, rubber dinghys and paddles etc. There are many guides available for activities in the area including water sports, climbing, skiing, hiking, artist tours, events, geology, mining, mushrooms, cannabis and plant medicines, garden tours, native history and lots more. This land is part of Sinixt territory. There are a particularly valued native storytellers here that may provide a walking history tour to a nearby aboriginal village site with a full scale replica of a kekuli (earth house). Please call ahead for recommendations on booking guides or the storyteller. You don't need one to get here, but its good to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle for some of the logging roads that are worth visiting. Roof and/or bike racks can also come in handy. The Vallican Whole community center has events nearby.
Recommended activities include floating down the river, canoeing the lake, hiking or climbing in Valhalla Park, soaking in Halfway Hot Springs or indulging in Nelson. We are surrounded by beautiful mountains and rivers. This valley has many outdoor activities and events and a very interesting history and culture including Sinixt, Doukhobor hippy and draft dodger. Nelson, Castlegar and Slocan Lake are all a half hour drive away. There are many other special places nearby such as the Goddess Pools and the Hippy Hole.
There is lots of parking. It is a 5 minute bike ride or 25 minute walk to public transportation. The Ecosociety's Kootenay Rideshare website is an excellent resource for getting around.
