Fundada a principios del siglo XVI en honor de la Santísima Trinidad, la ciudad de este mismo nombre fue cabeza de puente en la conquista del continente americano por los españoles. Sus edificios de los siglos XVIII y XIX, como el Palacio Brunet y el Palacio Cantero, fueron construidos en la época de prosperidad de la industria azucarera.

Valle de los Ingenios Highlights
Valle de los Ingenios, also named Valley de los Ingenios or Valley of the Sugar Mills, is a series of three interconnected valleys about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) outside of Trinidad, Cuba. The three valleys, San Luis, Santa Rosa, and Meyer, were a center for sugar production from the late 18th century until the late 19th century.
At the peak of the industry in Cuba there were over fifty sugar cane mills in operation in the three valleys, with over 30,000 slaves working in the mills and on the sugar cane plantations that surrounded them.
The entire area covers 270 km2 (100 sq mi) and includes the sites of over 70 former sugar mills.
Sugar production was an important industry for Cuba from the earliest settlement by the Spanish, who introduced sugar cane to the island in 1512, and trade in the commodity enriched Trinidad and the surrounding areas. The island became the world's foremost producer of sugar during the late 18th and 19th centuries, when sugar production was the main industry. The climate and soil were perfect for the cultivation of sugar cane, and good ports and interior connections facilitated transport and exportation of the refined sugar. To prevent the sugar from spoiling, rapid transport was necessary, and to this end a special railway line was laid down through the valley in the late 1880s, connecting the Valle de los Ingenios with Trinidad and the port at Casilda, 6 km (4 mi) from Trinidad, on the coast. The valleys are provided with water by several rivers, among them Rio Agabama, Rio Caracusey, Rio de Ay, and Rio Tayaba.
Due to the virtual extinction of the native Cubans through contact with diseases brought by the European settlers and attrition though their poor treatment as slaves, it was necessary for the Spanish plantation owners to import slaves from Africa to work in the sugar cane fields and in the mills. The abolition of slavery by the Spanish in 1820 made the practice of importing slaves more difficult; but it was not until the Wars of Independence in the 19th century that the economic dominance of the area came to an end, as many of the sugar mills were abandoned or became run down.
In 1988, Valle de los Ingenios and neighbouring Trinidad were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Although most of the sugar mills are in ruins, intact structures endure at some sites, including Guachinango, where the plantation house remains, and the plantation of Manaca Iznaga, where the owner's house, a tower and some barracones, the original slave quarters, still stand. Although the barracones are now used as housing and are in poor repair, the house (which has been converted into a restaurant) and the Iznaga Tower are well maintained.
The 45 metre (147 ft) tower was constructed sometime in 1816 by the owner, Alejo Maria Iznaga y Borrell [1]. According to experts, the bell that formerly hung on top of the tower announced the beginning and the end of the work day for the slaves, as well as the times for prayers to the Holy Virgin in the morning, midday, and afternoon. It was also used to sound an alarm in case of fire or slave escape. The height and magnificence of the tower served to display Iznaga's power over his slaves and his stature in the sugar industry and local society; at one time it was the tallest structure in Cuba. A recognized landmark of the region, the Iznaga Tower testifies to the area's flourishing material culture in the Spanish colonial period. The large bell now rests at the foot of the tower.

VALLE DE LOS INGENIOS:
La valle è in realtà una serie di tre valli collegate - San Luis, Santa Rosa e Meyer - della lunghezza complessiva di circa 12 km e con un'area di 270 kmq è sulla strada per La Sancti Spiritus. Questi villaggi sono la testimonianza di un passato schiavista. restano 70 zuccherifici, macchine da lavoro, i quartieri riservati agli schiavi, vecchie baracche.
Dalla metà del XIX secolo lo zucchero aveva soppiantato la lavorazione del cuoio e della carne salata e la regione di Trinidad produceva un terzo dello zucchero del paese.
A Manaca Iznaga ex piantagione con casa padronale e torre detta dei Gonzaga (alta oltre 44 metri ) che serviva come postazione per controllare lavoro e ritmi degli schiavi nelle piantagioni,si erge imponente come un monumento.
Dal 2001 è stato ripristinato, a scopo turistico, un corto convoglio composto da una macchina a vapore con alimentazione a petrolio pesante e due vetture a terrazzini aperte, che percorre, partendo da Trinidad, una ventina di km. della linea un tempo asservita al trasporto della canna da zucchero, fino a fermarsi in prossimità di una ex piantagione con casa padronale e torre detta dei Gonzaga che serviva un tempo per controllare il lavoro degli schiavi nei campi.
Il treno con qualche incertezza sbuffando attraversa un paesaggio stupendo, dove il tempo sembra essersi fermato alla fine dell' ottocento e ci si ritrova quasi immersi in una atmosfera da Far West. Il viaggio costa 10 CUC a testa e parte ogni mattina alle 9,30 da Trinidad e ritorna intorno alle 15,00.
PLAYA ANCON:
12 km a sud di Trinidad , è un lembo di sabbia bianca bagnato dalle placide acque azzurre del Mar dei Caraibi. Nei secoli le correnti hanno contribuito a formare i suoi 4 km di morbida sabbia e a poca distanza si estende una barriera corallina metà di immersioni e per gli amanti dello snorkeling.
Per arrivare da Trinidad si segue il Paseo Agramonte e ci si dirige a sud per circa 4 km verso il villaggio di Casilda. SI prosegue per altri 4 km verso ovest lungo l'Ensenada de Casilda, la baia che si trova tra la penisola e la terraferma e si trova l'unica strada che porta ad Ancon.
In pullman tutti i giorni davanti al Cubatur ne parte uno ogni ora. Vi lascerà all'altezza dell'Hotel Ancon.

Os preços aqui, se não for para os locais para o turista endinheirado, são semelhantes aos praticados em Portugal. E se quiser procurar os locais frequentados pelos cubanos, pode encontrar preços muito mais baratos.
Por exemplo, uma refeição custa entre 4 e 10 euros, um quarto de casal custa entre 12 e 20 euros, um táxi vale 16 euros por hora.
Sugerimos que leve alguns euros como segurança e que poderá cambiar localmente para CUC. Também poderá levantar dinheiro nas ATM que existem nas cidades, mas claro que dessa forma estará a pagar taxas bancárias.
Se quiser alugar carro, qualquer empresa deverá servir, uma vez que todas dependem do governo. As estradas estão mal sinalizadas e a utilização de GPS ainda é “tecnicamente proibida” e o equipamento pode ser confiscado na alfandega. Claro que ninguém lhe vai confiscar o telemóvel, tenha ou não GPS. Recomendamos que instale a aplicação maps.me, uma vez que é gratuita e pode descarregar mapas quando tiver acesso internet e depois, trabalha off-line. A cartografia tem bom detalhe e a aplicação faz rotas diferenciadas, consoante esteja de carro ou a caminhar.
