Nature Photography: Raptors! Photographing Kestrels and Red Kites in the South Wales Valleys
Sometimes you don't have to travel far to capture nature's beauty. I went with hopes of making some images of kestrels, and came back with kestrels, red kites, and a beautiful summer evening I won't forget in a hurry...
Take a look at my blog for some information regarding how the photographs were taken:

Pair of Red Kites, birds of prey in Mid Wales. 2013
At one time RED KITES were confined to Wales but a reintroduction scheme has brought them back to parts of England and Scotland.
This breeding pair was filmed from my house, near Newcastle Emlyn in Mid-Wales. They can be seen swooping and hunting over the valley daily.
The Red Kites of Ceredigion
A NEWER UPDATED VERSION OF THIS VIDEO CAN BE FOUND HERE . . . .
The Red Kite (Milvus milvus) is one of the most beautiful birds I think you'll ever come across; especially when seen in flight.
Again this year, we spent two weeks on holiday in the county of Ceredigion, West Wales and I took my trusty Canon 70D out and about as often as possible. I especially needed practice with the 400mm f5.6L lens, which is what I used in these photos. One such trip was to Bwlch Nant yr Arian (or as we've always called it, 'The Red Kite Centre') and the majority of the photos in this video were shot there on a single day in very changeable weather!
In hindsight I wish I'd given each photo a second or two longer in the video, but this was my first ever attempt at trying to make one!

Tŷ-mawr, Castell Caereinion, Sir Drefaldwyn - Animeiddiad gan y Comisiwn Brenhinol
Bu rhestru Tŷ-mawr, Castell Caereinion, yn adeilad Gradd I yn ddigwyddiad rhyfeddol o ystyried nad oedd yn edrych ar ddechrau'r 1990au damaid yn fwy cyffrous nag ysgubor yn mynd â'i phen iddi. Wedi i Peter Smith sylweddoli ym 1971 fod yr adeilad yn un hynod bwysig, fe'i hadferwyd ym 1998 ac adfer iddo'r un olwg, mae'n debyg, â phan godwyd ef ym 1460. Ar ôl yr adfer (a'r ailadeiladu rhannol) mae hi'n bosibl deall yr adeilad unwaith eto fel neuadd ag eiliau a ffrâm o goed ac efallai mai hon yw'r enghraifft orau o'i bath sydd wedi goroesi.

The Grade I listing of Tŷ-mawr, Castle Caereinion, is remarkable considering that in the early 1990s it appeared externally to be no more exciting than a collapsing barn. Recognised as highly significant by Peter Smith in 1971, and restored in 1998, it is reconstructed to its probable appearance when built in 1460. Following the restoration (and partial reconstruction) it is possible once again to understand the building as a timber-framed aisled hall, and probably the best surviving example of its type.

Photographing Red Kites with Andy Beattie - Wildlife Photography - Vlog#75
Photographing Yorkshire Red Kites at Harewood. Was a brilliant afternoon on an unseasonably warm winters day. I could have edited hundreds of shots to go in this video, but they all start to get a little samey after a while. Still, great fun and I never get tired of watching and photographing the Kites!
