Paros Video Map:
The Valley of the Butterflies is on the road that connects Parikia with Aliki. The valley is one of the most important and intriguing habitats, not only of the island, but in the whole of Greece. The surroundings are idyllic, exotic, lush with wild vegetation, cool running water, and filled in the spring and summer with hundreds, or even thousands of rare butterflies «panaxia quadripunctaria», or «Callimorpha quadripunctata» belonging to night butterflies.

RHODES - Valley of Butterflies (Petaloudes)
Distance from Rhodes City: 27Km
In the western side of the island of Rhodes, approximately five kilometers south east of the village of Theologos (or Tholos), lies the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes). This is one of the most attractive destinations on the island. During August, thousands of butterflies of the genus Panaxia (species Quadripunctaria Poda) overwhelm the valley in order to reproduce. During the rainy period, the Butterflies in the caterpillar stage remain in the Mediterranean thicket (arbutus, myrtle and rush) feeding on the foliage. As the end of the wet season approaches, towards the end of May, the final stage is concluded and the butterfly in all her perfection makes her appearance in the form recognizable to us all. They move constantly towards areas of highest humidity is greatest, always following the water ways, as the dry period progresses, they finally arrive at the valley.
Unfortuanetly, over the last few years the population of the Panaxia has been constantly in decline, due to several factors, one of the most important being the disturbance by visitors. The butterfly has an atrophic peptic system, meaning has no stomach. From May until the mating period (for the males), and until the egg lying period (for the females) they do not eat. They survive from the energy stored from their previous lives as caterpillars. The disturbance of visitors is forcing the butterflies to fly all day, consuming valuable energy. Visitors should not be denied the enjoyment of viewing the butterflies at rest, but it is prohibited to disturb them in any way (hand clapping, whistling etc).

RHODES GREECE TRAVEL VLOG - LINDOS ACROPOLIS - VALLEY OF THE BUTTERFLIES - BEACHES - DONKEY RIDE
RHODES GREECE is one of the most famous islands in history. This video takes you to the top sites on the island of Rhodes. The cities of Rhodes, and Lindos, and a trek through the Valley of the Butterflies are showcased.
Rhodes is a Greek island steeped in history, there is much to see here beyond the beaches. We start our tour of the island in Rhodes Old Town. Most of what you’ll see in Rhodes Town was constructed in the 14th century by the Knights of St. John, who occupied the island for 200 years.
This video takes you to Lindos to see the impressive Ancient Acropolis towering over the town. While it’s possible to head up to the Acropolis on foot, we opted for the donkey ride for the steep ascent. After our visit to the Acropolis we hung out on the beautiful Lindos Beach with crystal clear refreshing water.
Every summer, butterflies known as Jersey Tiger Moths (Euplagia quadripunctaria rhodosensis) visit the numerous Oriental Sweetgum trees of this valley in Rhodes island in order to spend the last stage of their life cycle! This is a must see if you are on Rhodes Greece. Petaloudes or Valley of the Butterflies is a cool excursion.

Valley of Butterflies in Rhodes Greece
The Valley of the Butterflies is another one of the landmarks of the island: the Zitia tree, which is found in a few parts of the Mediterranean, hosts millions of butterflies that peacefully hang in the shadowy wet paths it creates with the brook, which sometimes is transformed to lakes and small waterfalls. Butterflies gather in the valley during summer months, while disturbing them is strictly prohibited, as this interrupts their reproduction procedure.
The Natural History Museum of Rhodes operates at the entrance of the valley. Among the exhibits are endemic and rare species of the broader area of the Valley, which are displayed in cases representing the conditions of the natural environment.
This is one of the most attractive destinations on the island, but also one of the most fragile ones: Unfortunately, over the last few years the population of the butterfly has been constantly in decline, due to several factors, one of the most important being the disturbance by visitors. Visitors should not be denied the enjoyment of viewing the butterflies at rest, but it is prohibited to disturb them in any way (hand clapping, whistling etc).
