EGYPT: Valley of the Kings - Luxor
The Valley of the Kings is a valley in Egypt where rock cut tombs were excavated for the pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt).
The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes (modern Luxor), within the heart of the Theban Necropolis. It consists of two valleys, East Valley (where the majority of the royal tombs are situated) and West Valley (only one tomb is open to the public).
The Valley was used for primary burials for a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC. It contains at least 63 tombs, beginning with Thutmose I (or possibly earlier, during the reign of Amenhotep I) and ending with Ramesses X or XI, although non-Royal burials continued in usurped tombs.
Only about 20 of the tombs actually contain the remains of kings. The remains of nobles and of the royal family, together with unmarked pits and embalming caches, make up the rest. Around the time of Ramesses I (ca. 1301 BC) construction commenced in the separate Valley of the Queens.
The royal tombs are decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology and give clues as to the beliefs and funerary rituals of the period. Almost all of the tombs seem to have been opened and robbed in antiquity, but they still give an idea of the opulence and power of the pharaohs.
The tombs were constructed and decorated by the workers of the village of Deir el-Medina. The daily lives of these workers are quite well known and are recorded in tombs and official documents.
In modern times the valley has become famous for the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun (with its rumours of the curse of the pharaohs), and is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. In 1979, it became a World Heritage Site, along with the rest of the Theban Necropolis. Exploration, excavation and conservation continues in the valley.
Most of the tombs are not open to the public (18 of the tombs can be opened, but they are rarely open at the same time), and officials occasionally close those that are open for restoration work. Tour guides are no longer allowed to lecture inside the tombs, and visitors are expected to proceed quietly and in single file through the tombs. This is to minimize time in the tombs and prevent the crowds from damaging the surfaces of the decoration.
El Qurn is the highest point (420 m) in the Theban Hills. It has an almost pyramidal shape when viewed from the entrance to the Valley of the Kings, and therefore some Egyptologists believe it may have been the reason for choosing the location as a royal necropolis.

LUXOR TEMPLE & VALLEY OF THE KINGS | Egypt Travel Vlog
We only had one day to explore Luxor, Egypt, so even though we barely slept on the overnight train from Cairo, we went out at 7:00 A.M. to be the first and only tourists at the incredible Luxor Temple! It was totally worth it because it wasn't too hot yet and we took all the videos and photos we wanted with NO other people! Once the first tour bus arrived, we headed back to our hotel and had breakfast (AND COFFEE), but then decided to nap for few hours to wait out the mid day heat before heading to the Valley of the Kings via a $0.10 ferry and $7 taxi. Once again, we felt like there should have been way more tourists than there was, but we weren't complaining!

Egyptian archaeologists revealed the discovery of 30 ancient wooden coffins containing mummies near Luxor on Saturday.
The discovery was unveiled in front of Hatshepsut Temple in the Valley of the Kings.
The cache was the first to be dug up by an Egyptian mission, after years of foreign-led archaeological digs. A point that the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri and former antiquities minister Zahi Hawass were proud to emphasise.
The mummies were wrapped in cloth and placed inside sealed sarcophagi. Coffins with carved hands open were female, while if the hands were balled into firsts, they held males, according to Waziri.
The scenes carved on the side of the wooden caskets represented different aspects of the afterlife.
The burial site dates from the 22nd dynasty, around 1,000 BC.

We begin our journey to the ancient riverside City of Luxor, cruising though the Nile Valley to the southern City of Aswan. Luxor was once home to the ancient civilization of Thebes and history here dates back about 6000 years. It’s when you visit a place like this that you truly appreciate how short a human life span is, and how enduring human achievement can truly be. Most of this temple complex was built by King Amenhotep the 3rd during the 18th Dynasty making it about 3,500 years old. What’s even more incredible is that was part of Egypt’s 'modern kingdom'', now just imagine what came before that!
The size and grandeur of Luxor’s wonderfully preserved monuments has made this area the greatest attraction after the Pyramids and when you visit Luxor temple, its not hard to see why.

Why Was This Valley of the Kings Tomb Undecorated?
Why was this tomb in Luxor's 'Valley of the Kings' lacking any kind of decoration or hieroglyphics? Egyptologists believe it belonged not to a king, but another lesser royal.

The Valley of the Kings in Thebes can be reached from Luxor by a ferry across the Nile. It served as a royal burial place mainly for the 18 to 20 Dynasty (ca. 1550-1069 BC). The Valley of the Kings is a unique example of early Egyptian architecture and sculpture. 65 graves and pits have been discovered so far, but the valley still holds more hidden secrets.
Unfortunately, photography and filming is very difficult or completely forbidden. To protect the graves, only 3 graves can be visited at a time. Some are completely closed.
The highlight is of course the grave of Tutankhamun, which was found almost intact by Howard Carter in 1922.
In the video you see KV57, the grave of Horemheb (1319-1292 BC), a Pharaoh in the new empire.
Since 1979, the monuments of ancient Thebes are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Es ist ein einzigartiges Zeugnis von früh ägyptischer Baukunst und Bildhauerei. 65 Gräber und Gruben wurden bisher entdeckt, aber immer noch birgt das Tal weitere Geheimnisse.
Leider ist das Fotografieren und Filmen sehr erschwert bzw. ganz verboten. Zum Schutz der Gräber dürfen nur jeweils 3 Gräber besucht werden. Einige sind komplett geschlossen.
Höhepunkt ist natürlich das Grab von Tutanchamun, das 1922 von Howard Carter nahezu unversehrt gefunden wurde.
