Banff National Park Hiking: Moraine Lake // Road Trip 2019
Hiking Moraine Lake -- Valley of the Ten Peaks, Eiffel Lake, Larch Valley, and Sentinel Pass. Incredible hikes; definitely 'musts' if visiting Banff, especially Larch Valley.
We've been hiking around Lake Louise and Moraine Lake now, and we can't quite decide which is more beautiful. Moraine lake has the same blue-green water and pine tree hills, although it adds the mountain backdrop. Both hikes are incredible and insanely memorable.
Next stop, Yoho!

Moraine Lake & Valley of the 10 Peaks
Early evening view of Lake Moraine in Banff National Park Canada.
Traveler warning: Approximately 6 miles from the parking lot for Lake Moraine, the road junction was blocked by park employees in order to meter the traffic destined for the parking area because the parking lot was full! Luckily, I did a u-turn and came back only a minute later to be admitted. I can only imagine that earlier in the day, when there was full sunlight, it would be very difficult to gain access for parking because of the large crowds and demand to access this once less visited treasure.
Lake Louise and Moraine Lake In The Valley of the Ten Peaks Alberta Canada
Moraine Lake is a glacially-fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) outside the Village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6,183 feet (1,885 m). The lake has a surface area of .5 square kilometres (0.19 sq mi).
The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until mid to late June. When it is full, it reflects a distinct shade of blue. The colour is due to the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited in the lake on a continual basis.
EIFFEL PEAK Scramble -- Moraine Lake -- Banff National Park -- Alberta
Here's our scramble of Eiffel Peak in the Lake Louise area of Alberta, which starts at the extremely photographic Moraine Lake. The views in this valley are completely stunning, having been up here several times before. Larch Valley, Valley of the 10 Peaks and Wenkchemna pass are just a few of the gems in this area.
The views this day were completely haunting as the clouds and fog surrounding us as we climbed seemed right out of a movie. A very cool spectacle indeed.
Roughly 1200 meters of elevation gain over 6 kms to the summit make for a great day out. Not super challenging with exposure but the elevation gain gets the blood flowing for sure.
I enjoyed this much more than anticipated and the fog made it very mystical. A great day to get out and explore this great Province of ours. A short drive from Calgary and Banff.

Daily Banff Itinerary
► Day 1 - #lakelouise & #lakeagnes
We started off our Banff adventure with a bang! Lake Louise right out of the gate! We had to wake up SO SO early in order to get a parking spot (actually had to do this 3 out of 4 days) but is was SO SO worth it! After checking out Lake Louise we hiked up to Lake Agnes and the Agnes Teahouse for a snack at the quaint little teahouse in the mountains!
► Day 2 - #morainelake to #rockpiletrail & #larchvalley to #sentinelpass & #sulphurmountain
This was a HUGE day. We did SO much and had SUCH a full day, but to be honest we weren't tired at the end, we were energized by all of the incredible sights ad adventure! The Rockpile Trail at sunrise was our favorite place in all of Banff. And Larch Valley to Sentinel Pass was a challenging hike through the Valley of Ten Peaks was stunning. We finished off the day in Banff Town with a hike up and gondola ride down (free late in the afternoon!) Sulphur Mountain, which is visually extraordinary!
► Day 3 - #lakeminnewanka
We had a chill day on Day 3, checking out Lake Minnewanka right outside Banff Town. This was the 1 day out of our 4 day trip that we slept in, and goodness gracious we sure took advantage of the extra sleep! Lake Minnewanka is a stunning, ENORMOUS lake that has MILES AND MILES of trails and hikes all around it. We chose to do a few lakeside strolls and hang out with the beautiful view all around us.
► Day 4 - #littlebeehive & bigbeehive & #plainofsixglaciers & #peytolake
Our Number 1 favorite hike in Banff was on Day 4! We sure saved the best for last. Big Beehive and Little Beehive offer some of the most INCREDIBLE overlooks of Lake Louise. You'll have a perspective that not many people will ever get of one of the most stunning lakes on planet earth. The two beehives are a MUST! So is Plain of Six Glaciers. Finish off the day with a drive up to Peyto Lake and you will put a crown on an AWESOME BANFF ADVENTURE!
Hi, we are Julie & Zach, a couple who sold everything in 2018 and took off an adventure around the world! So far, this journey has taken us in a van ALL ACROSS the United States and Canada, from snorkeling with manatees in Florida to camping in the Grand Canyon to climbing glaciers in Canada, and everything in between! We were both working and going to school while living in Chicago in 2017 and 2018, and to be honest it really wore on us. We were exhausted, unfulfilled, and ready for an adventure. So, we made it happen! We saved up AS MUCH as we could over those 2 years - all homemade meals, no shopping, walk or bike everywhere, etc - and sold almost all of our belongings! With that money, we bought a renovated a van that we have been living in ever since! We started our YouTube channel a few weeks ago and have been loving creating videos! When we started, we were SO SO SO SO bad at it, and to be honest we still kinda suck, but we want to get better! What videos do you want to see? What do you want to know? Let us know and we will make it happen!
We believe that travel is truly a life-changing experience, it certainly changed ours! When you get out of your everyday world and experience new cultures, foods, places, people, sights, sounds, and take an adventure, you grow as a person and you become a better version of yourself! You are WAY stronger than you know, and stronger than you give yourself credit for. You have the ability to do anything, so make it happen! BE FOREVER FREE!

S U M M I T - Journey into the Valley of the Ten Peaks (Banff, Alberta)
Mountains are an alluring attraction. They represent ambitious obstacles that dare to be challenged. To conquer these perilous yet majestic landforms is to prove oneself capable of physical and mental endurance. On top of the summit, enchanted by awe and wonderment, I see blankets of green and mountain peaks tipped with pure white. I reach out to touch the blue skies, this feeling of freedom will live with me until I die.

Hiking the Valley of the 10 peaks in Banff national Park -Moraine Lake to top of Wenkchemna Pass
This is one of the most spectacular day hikes in the Canadian Rockies this hike is 9.7 km (6 miles) one way. Elevation gain is 733m (2,405 ft) and at the max elevation of 2,620m (8,595 ft) one of the highest maintained trails in the Canadian Rockies. A steep start to begin with but after taking the left fork at jct with Larch valley the trail levels off with a gradual incline passing Eiffel Lake and skirting the alpine until the last section where it becomes steep again. Fantastic views of one of Canadas best jewels

Canada: Banff National Park
Banff National Park is Canada's oldest national park and was established in 1885. Located in the Rocky Mountains, 110–180 kilometres (68–112 mi) west of Calgary in the province of Alberta, Banff encompasses 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 sq mi) of mountainous terrain, with many glaciers and ice fields, dense coniferous forest, and alpine landscapes. The Icefields Parkway extends from Lake Louise, connecting to Jasper National Park in the north. Provincial forests and Yoho National Park are neighbours to the west, while Kootenay National Park is located to the south and Kananaskis Country to the southeast. The main commercial centre of the park is the town of Banff, in the Bow River valley.
The Canadian Pacific Railway was instrumental in Banff's early years, building the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise, and attracting tourists through extensive advertising. In the early 20th century, roads were built in Banff, at times by war internees from World War I, and through Great Depression-era public works projects. Since the 1960s, park accommodations have been open all year, with annual tourism visits to Banff increasing to over 5 million in the 1990s. Millions more pass through the park on the Trans-Canada Highway. As Banff has over three million visitors annually, the health of its ecosystem has been threatened. In the mid-1990s, Parks Canada responded by initiating a two-year study, which resulted in management recommendations, and new policies that aim to preserve ecological integrity.
Banff National Park has a subarctic climate with three ecoregions, including montane, subalpine, and alpine. The forests are dominated by Lodgepole pine at lower elevations and Engelmann spruce in higher ones below the treeline, above which is primarily rocks and ice. Mammal species such as the grizzly bear, cougar, wolverine, elk, bighorn sheep and moose are found, along with hundreds of bird species. Reptiles and amphibians are also found but only a limited number of species have been recorded. The mountains are formed from sedimentary rocks which were pushed east over newer rock strata, between 80 and 55 million years ago. Over the past few million years, glaciers have at times covered most of the park, but today are found only on the mountain slopes though they include the Columbia Icefield, the largest uninterrupted glacial mass in the Rockies. Erosion from water and ice have carved the mountains into their current shapes.
Lake Louise, a hamlet located 54 km (34 mi) northwest of the town of Banff, is home to the landmark Chateau Lake Louise at the edge of Lake Louise. Located 15 km (9.3 mi) from Lake Louise, Moraine Lake provides a scenic vista of the Valley of the Ten Peaks. This scene was pictured on the back of the $20 Canadian banknote, in the 1969–1979 (Scenes of Canada) series. The Lake Louise Mountain Resort is also located near the village. Lake Louise is one of the most visited lakes in the world and is framed to the southwest by the Mount Victoria Glacier.
The Icefields Parkway is a 230-kilometre-long (140 mi) road connecting Lake Louise to Jasper, Alberta. The Parkway originates at Lake Louise, and extends north up the Bow Valley, past Hector Lake, which is the largest natural lake in the park. Other scenic lakes near the parkway include Bow Lake, and Peyto Lakes, both north of Hector Lake. The Parkway then crosses Bow Summit (2,088 m (6,850 ft)), and follows the Mistaya River to Saskatchewan Crossing, where it converges with the Howse and North Saskatchewan River. Bow Summit is the highest elevation crossed by a public road in Canada.

When you imagine the Canadian Rockies, Banff National Park is likely the image that comes to mind. While a beautiful location for hiking and relaxation during the summer, this 2,500 square mile alpine mountain sanctuary comes alive during the winter.
Snowy forests, glacier-carved lakes, and icefields set the scene in this, Canada’s first national park. Your Banff National Park tour begins in Banff itself, a resort town with a casual atmosphere, loaded with bars and restaurants, and continues into the park’s vast outdoor space, which is often utilized for winter activities. Whether you’re an experienced skier or are new to the sport, you’ll find thousands of acres of slopes to carve up. Take lessons in town or at one of the resorts dotting the mountains, or, if you’re not sure about skiing, try snowshoeing and hiking through the pristine wilderness. Embark on the Johnston Canyon Ice Walk for one of the most astonishing views of nature you’ll ever see…or book a sleigh ride or dog sledding ride for an adventure straight out of a storybook.
Ready to really appreciate some natural beauty? Your Banff National Park sightseeing will lead you to the Banff Gondola and let it take you to the summit for a view of Bow Valley and the surrounding Rocky Mountains. We promise you’ve never seen anything like it.
