in Portugal serious accident...
In a space of few years, performance of Group B rally cars had advanced in leaps and bounds, making them not only more dangerous but also more exciting - which in turn drew even bigger crowds of spectators to watch the action. In addition, in Mediterranean countries the crowd control and safefy mentality has traditionally been very lax. Combining super-fast Group B rally cars, huge crowds and non-existent spectator control is a recipe for disaster.
This recipe would meet it's logical end at 1986 Portugal. First stages of the rally had traditionally been held in Sintra forests some 20 kilometers west of capital Lisboa, guaranteeing huge crowds every year. Drivers first in the road often described the experience as sheer madness, competitive driving was impossible as sea of spectators parted only when car was within meters of them and reveal very narrow trail through people.
Unfortunate Joaquim Santos, local driver on a Ford RS200, was seeded 12th driver to start on first stage. Lead drivers were already through and road was clearer but still there were occasional spectators standing in middle of the road. Coming from fast right hand bend and into a tighter right hander over a small crest on downhill section, Santos lost control of the car and spun right into thick crowd. Two children and a woman were killed on the spot and dozens more injured, with one of the injured children later dying in the hospital.
Loss of life had already happened, but tragedy continued. Organisers did not stop the stage until about ten more cars had started. Stage was five kilometers long and accident happened at approx four kilometers from the start, meaning that delay in stopping was unacceptably long. On top of that, top drivers were informed of the incident only after they had covered two more stages and arrived to rest halt, ready to tackle the those three stages twice more.
Learning of the tragedy, Ford decided to pull their remaining cars out of the rally. Organisers wanted the rally to continue and only after several appeals were made, agreed to cancel the repeated stages. Unhappy with the situation, professional drivers from all works teams gathered at 16th floor meeting room at Hotel Estoril Sol. FISA and rally representatives later arrived to make a visit but left with empty hands. After several hours of deliberation, a joint statement prepared by the drivers was read to press.

Castle of the Moors Castelo dos Mouros Palace of Sintra Palacio Nacional de Sintra Debussy Deux Arab
The Castle of the Moors, Castelo dos Mouros, Palace of Sintra, Palacio Nacional de Sintra, Claude Debussy (1862-1918) Deux Arabesques, First movement, Andantino con moto, Second movement, Allegretto scherzando, Walter Gieseking (1895-1956)

The Castle of the Moors (Castelo dos Mouros) is situated on the top of the Sintra Mountains, where it has a panoramic view of Sintra, and on a clear day the Atlantic Ocean. The castle was constructed during the period of Muslim Iberia in the 8th and 9th centuries. After the conquest of Lisbon (1147), the castle surrendered voluntarily to Christian forces. The 1755 Lisbon earthquake affected the stability of the castle, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The climate of Sintra is characterized by low temperatures and elevated precipitation, due to its proximity to the sea.
The Palace of Sintra (Palacio Nacional de Sintra), also called Town Palace (Palacio da Vila) is the best preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The history of the castle begins in the Moorish Al-Andalus era, after the Umayyad conquest of Hispania in the 8th century. The castle was the residence of the Islamic Moorish Taifa of Lisbon rulers. In the 12th century the town was conquered by King Afonso Henriques, who took the 'Sintra Palace' castle for his use. The blend of Gothic, Manueline, Moorish, and Mudejar styles in the present palace is, however, mainly the result of building campaigns in the 15th and early 16th centuries.
The conical chimneys of the kitchen dominate the skyline of the town. The oldest rooms of the palace include the Arab Room (Sala dos Arabes) decorated with intricate motifs of ceramic tiles (azulejos), the Swans' Room (Sala dos Cisnes) with a magnificent ceiling decorated with swans, and the Magpies Room (Sala das Pegas) painted with 136 magpies, each one holding a rose and a scroll with the words por bem (for honour). This relates to the story that the king John I was caught in the act of kissing a lady-in-waiting by his queen Philippa of Lancaster. To put a stop to all the gossip, he had the room decorated with as many magpies as there were women at the court.

The World Rally Championship Crash Of 1986
The 1986 World Rally Championship was the 14th season of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) World Rally Championship (WRC). The season consisted of 13 rallies, including all twelve venues of the previous season as well as the addition of the Olympus Rally. This marked the return of the WRC to the United States and North America, as well as the first world rally to be held on the western side of the continent. The December rally would also be the only WRC event to feature Group B competition in the United States.
The 1986 season was notable for being the last World Rally Championship season driven with the popular Group B rally cars, which were banned after the fatal crashes at the Rally Portugal, where three spectators were killed and more than 30 injured, and at the Tour de Corse, where Henri Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto died in a fireball accident. This was the year where Group B (first introduced in 1982) was at its peak, and the 1986 season saw some of the most powerful and sophisticated rally cars ever built, some of which were mid-engined, like the Lancia Delta S4 and the Ford RS200. The drivers' championship was won by Peugeot's Juha Kankkunen, followed by two other Flying Finns, Lancia's Markku Alén and Kankkunen's teammate Timo Salonen. The manufacturers' title was taken by Peugeot, after a close battle with the Martini-sponsored Lancia team.[1]
