Amsterdam • Boetzelaer|Nispen • Edward Collinson solo show – things I know won’t last
Today 13th June we attended this opening at Gallery Nispen | Boetzelaer in the De Clerqstraat in Amsterdam. The solo show of Edward Collinson things I know won't last.
About Boetzelaer|Nispen was initiated in Shoreditch London in October 2011 by Linda van Nispen tot Pannerden and Marnix van Boetzelaer and is now located in Amsterdam In its first year Boetzelaer|Nispen programmed with a project space style approach, not forming long term commitments and hosting many group projects. The gallery chose to combine interesting young artists from both London and the Netherlands. After running this programme successfully for a year Linda and Marnix decided that it was time to take things further and figured that it’s programming would have more urgency in another context. They chose to start operating Boetzelaer|Nispen from Amsterdam as a more conventional gallery.
Edward Collinson – things I know won’t last Exhibition runs from 13 June - 11 July
Economy is a central underlying theme in Edward Collinson’s practice. The work of art as an artefact in a strongly capitalist system and the role of the artist as a labourer are analysed in his first solo-exhibition “things I know won’t last” at Boetzelaer|Nispen.
The show is conceptually anchored by three large monochrome drawings on shaped paper that are the result of a laborious process of filling every inch of the surface with a metallic ballpoint. They sit in the space as if they have been discarded, a feeling clearly contrasting with the precious nature of the silver shimmer of their surface and the labour involved making them. This contrast evokes questions on what actually is the nature of these objects, on the one hand they seem discarded, worthless almost, in which case their laborious production was a waste of time, on the other hand though their precious nature makes them artefacts and the time spent making them was the worthwhile economic output of a young artistic labourer. The latter is reinforced by their position in a white cube gallery space.
