Saint-Rémy-de-Provence | VAN GOGH'S Trail and FOOD
Ravishing St-Rémy is about as cultured and chi-chi as Provence gets. Built from honey-coloured stone, and centred on a lovely, plane-shaded square lined by cafes, St-Rémy is a fantastic summer getaway.
Monastère St-Paul de Mausole, a monastery turned asylum is famous for one of its former residents – the ever-volatile Vincent van Gogh, who admitted himself in 1889. Walk the Van Gogh trail to see recreated works and where his inspiration in St Remy came from.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a fine example of a charming rural French village with a special character of its own. Definitely worth visiting, the village is located about 12 miles or 20 kilometers south of Avignon in the heart of Provence.

It’s a good destination any time, but extra special on a Wednesday morning with the outdoor food and flea market going strong, as we’ll show you coming up soon in the program.
Provence in the south of France is famous for its outdoor markets and you'll find the market at Saint-Rémy is one of the best.
But just simply walking the pedestrian lanes of this small town any day of the week is probably the most interesting thing you could do here and we are going to show you all the places to see.
The village center is small enough that you can just walk any place you like, it doesn't take long, and you won't get lost, but this map route gives you some idea of a sequence of lanes you can easily walk through the little town. That would only take you about one hour altogether to cover the entire village, but of course you’ll want to linger, do some shopping, take some pictures and look around.
Our tour was conducted by Provence Reservations.

Espace Van Gogh or Hospital at Arles, where he admitted himself after cutting off his ears. This is also where he painted the courtyard.

Van Gogh and the Asylum at Saint-Rémy
John Walsh
Thursday, April 18, 2019, 5:30 pm
After suffering a manic episode in Arles, van Gogh was hospitalized in the spring of 1889 and then voluntarily committed to a nearby sanitarium for one year. There his view of the world was mostly confined to the garden and the panorama out his window. This lecture examines how, in spite of these limits and several relapses, he was able to paint some of his most visionary landscapes, his most moving portraits, and many studies after other artists, in particular Jean-François Millet.
Generously sponsored by the John Walsh Lecture and Education Fund and the Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund.
Note: This lecture is the fifth in the series Vincent van Gogh’s Turning Points.
