NORTHERN IRELAND: PRESIDENT CLINTON'S FINAL DAY IN BELFAST
English/Nat
Bill Clinton - on his ground-breaking visit to Belfast - received a tumultuous welcome when he switched on the city's Christmas lights.
Thousands of people cheered as the President wished them a peaceful Christmas from under a huge Christmas tree - donated to Belfast by its sister city of Nashville, Tennessee.
Later Clinton addressed a gathering of Northern Ireland's politicians, business and civic leaders and encouraged them to build peace at the grass-roots.
Belfast City Hall -- scene of countless demonstrations in the past 26 years of the so- called 'Troubles'.
A huge banner saying 'Belfast says no' once hung across the front of the building but tonight Belfast said 'yes' to Bill Clinton and to peace.
Belfast-born singer Van Morrison got the crowd in the mood -- there had been rumours that the American President might join him on the saxophone, but they remained only rumours.
The 45 foot (nine metre) Christmas tree in front of the city hall was donated by the American city of Nashville -- a gift to the people of Belfast.
President Clinton had earlier spent the day amongst the city's residents -- walking along both the mostly-Catholic Falls Road and the mainly Protestant Shankill Road.
Peace negotiators hope that Clinton's presence, and his appeals to both sides of the deeply divided province, would speed the peace process forward.
In the run-up to his visit the paramilitary cease-fires -- which have lasted more than a year -- have been looking dangerously fragile.
Belfast's Lord Mayor, led the welcoming celebrations
The whole crowd joined in the countdown to the moment when President Clinton and two local schoolchildren hit the switch that turned on the city lights.
Clinton continued the theme of his visit in his address -- the need for peace and reconciliation.
And the people of this religious province even forgave him for misquoting the Bible at the end of his message.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
As I look down these beautiful streets, I think how wonderful it will be for people to do their holiday shopping without worry of searches or bombs, to visit loved ones on the other side of the border without the burden of checkpoints or roadblocks. To enjoy these magnificent Christmas lights without any fear of violence. Peace has brought real change to your lives. (Cutaway) I leave you with these thoughts. May the Christmas Spirit of peace and goodwill flourish and grow in you. May you remember the words of the Lord Mayor - this is Christmas, we celebrate the world in a new way because of the birth of Emmanuel, God with us. And when God was with us, he said no words more important than these. 'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall inherit the earth. Merry Christmas and God bless you all.
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
Jesus actually said that the peace-makers are the children of God - it would have been just as apt on this day of celebration.
After dinner, Clinton moved down the road to Belfast's prestigious Queen's University.
There he meet a specially invited audience of Northern Ireland's civic leaders - from all parts of the province's political and religious spectrum.
Introduced by British Northern Ireland minister, Sir Patrick Mayhew, the President told the assembled audience that peace couldn't be made by leaders, it has to come from the people.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
As the first U.S. president to visit Northern Ireland Clinton has become an active catalyst in the peace process.
He went all-out to persuade Protestant unionists and Catholic nationalists to find common cause.

Them - Gloria (1965)
Van Morrison was born on August 31, 1945 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. More than two decades later, in 1968 Van Morrison released Astral Weeks, an album of astonishing originality and inventiveness that stretched the frontiers of rock music. On his follow-up record, Moondance (1970), he deployed a snappy rhythm-and-blues band behind tautly structured songs. Morrison has always seemed oblivious to public taste and reaction to him, and his artistry and later albums such as Back on Top (1999) and What's Wrong With This Picture? (2003) continue to explore different modes of self-expression.
George Ivan (“Van”) Morrison was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on August 31, 1945. Morrison says he began listening to records around age two or three, and when he was 15, the music bug grabbed him and latched on, and he dropped out of school to pursue a music career. His first full-time effort was with a local band called the Monarchs. The band toured Europe, often playing military bases, but by the time he was 19, Morrison had left the Monarchs behind to open a Belfast R&B club and form a new band called Them.
The band made a solid living playing covers as the club’s house band, but they managed to break out with several songs in the mid-1960s, including “Don’t Start Crying Now” and “Baby Please Don’t Go.” The success of these singles allowed the band to move its base to London, where they recorded more music amongst a lineup that couldn’t seem to hold. In 1966, Them headed west, embarking on an American tour, the culmination of which would mark Morrison’s departure from the band. Soon after Them broke up, Van Morrison was reborn as a solo artist.

Van Morrison - In the Garden
Van Morrison
In The Garden
The streets are always wet with rain
After a summer shower when I saw you standin'
In the garden in the garden wet with rain
You wiped the teardrops from your eye in sorrow
As we watched the petals fall down to the ground
And as I sat beside you I felt the
Great sadness that day in the garden
And then one day you came back home
You were a creature all in rapture
You had the key to your soul
And you did open that day you came back to the garden
The olden summer breeze was blowin' on your face
The light of God was shinin' on your countenance divine
And you were a violet colour as you
Sat beside your father and your mother in the garden
The summer breeze was blowin' on your face
Within your violet you treasure your summery words
And as the shiver from my neck down to my spine
Ignited me in daylight and nature in the garden
And you went into a trance
Your childlike vision became so fine
And we heard the bells inside the church
We loved so much
And felt the presence of the youth of
Eternal summers in the garden
And as it touched your cheeks so lightly
Born again you were and blushed and we touched each other lightly
And we felt the presence of the Christ
And I turned to you and I said
No Guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the father in the garden
No Guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the Father and the
Son and the Holy Ghost
In the garden wet with rain
No Guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature and the holy ghost
In the garden, in the garden, wet with rain
No Guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the Father in the garden

2006 Brian Kennedy - Every Song Is A Cry For Love
Brian Edward Patrick Kennedy (born 12 October 1966, Belfast, Northern Ireland) is an Irish singer-songwriter and author, who is known for his ballads, and has represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006. He is the younger brother of musician Bap Kennedy.
Kennedy was born and grew up on the Falls Road in Belfast. He has described in public the violence of The Troubles, during his childhood and teen years. He once described seeing a young man being chased and then shot dead by a British soldier a few feet away from him. He also would harmonise with police, ambulance and fire engine sirens.
Kennedy came out as gay in 2009. He is a long-term friend of Katharine Sullivan McArdle.
Kennedy came to prominence with the masses as one of Van Morrison's backing singers, appearing on a string of recordings including A Night in San Francisco, Days Like This, The Healing Game and Back on Top and live in concert, frequently alongside Georgie Fame. He had a minor UK radio airplay hit with the title track from his 2001 album Get on With Your Short Life.
Kennedy was chosen as the Irish competitor for the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest in Athens, where he sang the self-penned Every Song is a Cry for Love. Kennedy's performance in the contest's semi-finals marked the 1000th song to feature in the history of the Eurovision competition. Following qualification, Kennedy finished tenth in the finals on 20 May, with 93 points.
He performed on the original Secret Garden version of the song You Raise Me Up, which has been recorded by more than a hundred other artists, such as Josh Groban and Westlife; he also sang this song at the funeral of the footballer, George Best.
Kennedy performed at the opening of new studios for his local station Belfast CityBeat in 2006. In July 2008, he joined the judging panel of the Citybeat Young Star Search, Northern Ireland's biggest kids talent search.
On 23 August 2010, Brian Kennedy played a version of 'Christopher Street' on a small Balcony overlooking Dame Street, Dublin for the music viral show BalconyTV.
