Namibia 4x4 - Van Zyl's Pass 2013 - Van Zyl's Campsite to Marienfluss via van Zyl's Pass
Our second Trip over Van Zyl's Pass 2013 / 2014.
This is definitely one of the most challenging Mountain crossings of the World, don't expect a road....., because it's called Pass.....
Driving sandy River Beds, sharp Tyre killing Rocks & Gravel, very, very steep downhills and great fun.
The worth part comes on the very end, and there is no chance to return, as the Pass can only be crossed from east to west.
We did it on ourselves, w/o Problems, with an ruggedized Toyota Hilux from ASCO, but you should be a very experienced off road driver, have the right Vehicle, proper GPS setup ( a Map is useless, as the routes are sometimes hard to identify and washed away by Nature ), have no fears of heights and a good spirit ....
Where there is a will, there's a way....

9th Expedition in Namibia
Van Zyl's pass to green drum,Kaokoland, Namibia
4x4 Driving and camping in the Hartmann Mountains and at the skeleton coast border at the green drum. Fairy circles of unknown origin seen for miles.
Staying over at the Opuwo Country Hotel. An oasis after the desert.
Van Zyl's Pass
Our travelers arrive at Van Zyl's Pass campsite, which doesn't have running water or toilet fascilities. Next day it's time to tame the Van Zyl's Pass itself, regarded as quite an achievement by those who put their stones down at the bottom of it afterwards. We also have a quick lookaround at Okahirongo Lodge, an expensive, luxury resort in the wilderness.

Namibia 4x4 - Kunene River Lodge to Epupa Camp along D 3700 River Trail
This Movie should give an Idea to the interested Traveller what to expect, while planning this Trip along Kunene River.
Many thanks to Ine and Peter from Holland, who accompanied us on this day Trip.
Van Zyl's Pass | Namibia - Kaokoland | Part 1
The well known, less driven road in the North-Western part of Namibia, kaokoland, leading to the notorious Van Zyl's Pass and down to the Marienfluss. Washed out roads, plenty of rocky terrain, great views and soft sand in the river beds was just eaten up by the fully kitted Toyota Hilux D-4D.
This video sequence was taken in December 2014 when the area was very dry.

KAOKOLAND SAFARI
Come on a journey with us as we explore the Kaokoveld in Namibia. We go down the scary Van Zyl's Pass and scale the Joubert's Pass, take a boat ride down the Kunene river, and drink in the beauty of the Marienfluss. Truly a breathtaking experience all around!
Van Zyl's Pass 2016
We went to Namibia in December 2016 and the team decided that we had to visit the Marienfluss and the Kunene River in the process.
What better way to do this than by taking a trip down Van Zyl's Pass. I thought I might as well film it with the action camera at the same time then.
Here's the result. I've done quite a bit of speeding up of the video, slowing down to actual speed on the tricky bits. There's no sound, as I thought it better to remove large amounts of pointless commentary by me in the front passenger seat and constant engine noise.
The car is a Toyota Hilux Pick-up and our guides in front are in a Toyota LandCruiser.
Thanks to the rest of the White Knuckles Team for driving and support. Find out more at
Thanks also to Caesar, Candice and Michael from Kunene Tours who guided us and took care of us in the wilds of North-West Namibia. Find out more about them at
I've also got photos from the rest of the trip on Facebook at

Namibia, Kaokoland: serious 4x4 on Van Zyl's Pass
During our 2013 trip through Namibia we traveled via Van Zyl's pass to Marienfluss.
The roads up to Van Zyl's and the pass itself are very tough to drive.
Sometimes, it takes up to an hour just to cover 14 kilometers of track...
But once you reach the Marienfluss the stunning landscapes make it worthwile.
Especially if you are treated with two big thunderstorms on either side of the Marienfluss valley.

Puros Oropembe D3707 May 2017
After leaving Puros we headed to The Algerian border on the Kunene river via Oropembe. We stayed at the community campsite at Okarohombo. Good facilities but under the main tree, it is covered in huge bugs which come down at sunset and they get into everything and including your hair.Had to move to another tree.
