With its lush and elevated location, the Kirirom National Park has a real escapism feel to it, with the stunning views across to the Cardamom Mountains. Connected with the park, Chambok is a community of 9 rural villages where visitors can experience village-life, and explore the beautiful natural surroundings. It’s located on the border of the Kirirom National Park in southwest Cambodia, an area of forest, waterfalls and rice fields. Traditional Cambodian Dance ???? Celebrating Khmer New Year ☀️
The Walk Around the World Travel Vlog by Meigo Märk
????????????
Dance in Cambodia (Khmer: របាំ robam) consists of three main categories: classical dance of the royal court, folk dance which portrays cultural traditions, and social dances performed in social gatherings.
????????????
Cambodia's premier performing art form is Khmer classical dance, or Robam Preah Reach Trop, a highly stylized dance form originating from the royal courts. Originally performed and maintained by attendants of the royal palaces, Khmer classical dance was introduced to the general public in the mid-20th century and became widely celebrated as iconic of Cambodian culture, often performed during public events, holidays, and for tourists visiting Cambodia. Performances feature elaborately costumed dancers performing slow and figurative gestures to the musical accompaniment of a pinpeat ensemble. The classical repertoire includes dances of tribute or invocation and the enactment of traditional stories and epic poems such as the Ramayana. Two of the most performed classical dances are the Robam Chuon Por (Wishing dance) and the Robam Tep Apsara (Apsara dance).
????????????
Other names for Khmer classical dance include Cambodian court dance and the royal ballet of Cambodia, although the latter term can also refer to the National Dance Company of Cambodia. In Khmer, it is formally known as Robam Preah Reach Trop (របាំព្រះរាជទ្រព្យ, lit. dances of royal wealth) or Lakhon Preah Reach Trop (ល្ខោនព្រះរាជទ្រព្យ, lit. theatre of royal wealth). It is also sometimes called Lakhon Luong (ល្ខោនហ្លួង, lit. the king's theatre). During the Lon Nol regime of Cambodia, the dance tradition was referred to as Lakhon Kbach Boran Khmer (ល្ខោនក្បាច់បូរាណខ្មែរ, lit. Khmer theatre of the ancient style), a term that distanced it from its royal legacy.
☀️????????
Cambodian New Year (Khmer: បុណ្យចូលឆ្នាំថ្មី) (Choul Chnam Thmey, literally Enter New Year), is the name of the Cambodian holiday that celebrates the traditional Lunar New Year. The holiday lasts for three days beginning on New Year's Day, which usually falls on April 13th or 14th, which is the end of the harvesting season, when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor before the rainy season begins. Khmers living abroad may choose to celebrate during a weekend rather than just specifically April 13th through 16th. The Khmer New Year coincides with the traditional solar new year in several parts of India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand.
☀️????????
Cambodians also use Buddhist Era to count the year based on the Buddhist calendar. For 2018, it will be 2562 BE (Buddhist Era).
☀️????????
Maha Sangkran (មហាសង្រ្កាន្ត)
Maha Sangkran, derived from Sanskrit Maha Sankranti, is the name of the first day of the new year celebration. It is the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. People dress up and light candles and burn incense sticks at shrines, where the members of each family pay homage to offer thanks for the Buddha's teachings by bowing, kneeling and prostrating themselves three times in front of his image. For good luck people wash their face with holy water in the morning, their chests at noon, and their feet in the evening before they go to bed.
☀️????????
Virak Vanabat (វិរ:វ័នបត)
Vireak Vanabat is the name of the second day of the new year celebration. People contribute charity to the less fortunate by helping the poor, servants, homeless, and low-income families. Families attend a dedication ceremony to their ancestors at monasteries.

Trip to Chambok Community Based Ecotourism Site
I have been to Kirirom National Park 3 times but this is the first time to go to Chombok community and ecotourism site. Out plan is to see Chambok waterfall so we need to travel the same highway 4, turn right at the entrance to Kirirom National Park but turn right again to Chombok village and heading to Chambok community based ecotourism site office where we can ask park the van and ask information to Chambok waterfall. The next video will show the waterfall.
Your support is a huge encouragement for me as a Khmer to continue sharing the tourist attraction places in Cambodia to all Khmer and the World and bring more tourists to Cambodia.

Cycling Adventures in Kirirom National Park (Cambodia)
Clips from a number of cycling trips around Kirirom National Park in Cambodia. We typically start at the top of the mountain and pick a few of the dozens of trails that are scattered around the summit (950m). Then we'll camp at the abandoned shelter along the lake - perfect for hanging up hammocks.
Next morning, we descend through the 30-40km Kirirom Backdoor, which Steve and I mapped out in May 2010. The trail follows a number of logging single-tracks and crosses a few streams and one river (pretty fun in rainy season!). The trail runs along an old hydroelectric dam reservoir and ends with a harrowing 500m altitude descent on a winding, pristine tarmac trail that seems meant for cycling - make sure your brakes are in top condition.

The Water Festival is the New Year's celebrations that take place in Southeast Asian nations such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand as well as among the Dai people of China. It is called the 'Water Festival' by Westerners because they notice people splashing or pouring water at one another as part of the cleansing ritual to welcome the New Year. Traditionally people gently sprinkled water on one another as a sign of respect, but as the new year falls during the hottest month in South East Asia, many people end up dousing strangers and passersby in vehicles in boisterous celebration. The act of pouring water is also a show of blessings and good wishes. It is believed that on this Water Festival, everything old must be thrown away, or it will bring the owner bad luck.
Water Festival is often a confusing term for foreigners in Cambodia because the Khmer New Year in April is not normally referred to as the Water Festival, unlike equivalent new year celebrations in neighboring countries. Rather, the Water Festival in Cambodia usually refers to the festival Bon Om Thook (Khmer:ពិធីបុណ្យអុំទូក) focused on traditional boat racing, which usually takes place in November each year.
Cambodians also use Buddhist Era to count the year based on the Buddhist calendar. For 2018, it will be 2562 BE (Buddhist Era).
The three days of the new year
Maha Sangkran (មហាសង្រ្កាន្ត)
Maha Sangkran, derived from Sanskrit Maha Sankranti, is the name of the first day of the new year celebration. It is the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. People dress up and light candles and burn incense sticks at shrines, where the members of each family pay homage to offer thanks for the Buddha's teachings by bowing, kneeling and prostrating themselves three times in front of his image. For good luck people wash their face with holy water in the morning, their chests at noon, and their feet in the evening before they go to bed.
Vearak Loeng Sak (វារៈឡើងស័ក)
T'ngai Loeng Sak in Khmer is the name of the third day of the new year celebration. Buddhists wash the Buddha statues and their elders with perfumed water. Bathing the Buddha images is a symbolic practice to wash bad actions away like water clean dirt from household items. It is also thought to be a kind deed that will bring longevity, good luck, happiness and prosperity in life. By washing their grandparents and parents, the children can obtain from them best wishes and good pieces of advice to live the life for the rest of the year.
New Year's customs
In temples, people erect a sand hillock on temple grounds. They mound up a big pointed hill of sand or dome in the center which represents Valuka Chaitya, the stupa at Tavatimsa where the Buddha's hair and diadem are buried. The big stupa is surrounded by four small ones, which represent the stupas of the Buddha's favorite disciples: Sariputta, Moggallana, Ananda, and Maha Kassapa. There is another tradition called Sraung Preah (ស្រង់ព្រះ) : pouring water or liquid plaster (a mixture of water with some chalk powder) on elder relative, or people (mostly the younger generation is responsible for pouring the water).
