Vance Monument Rededication
The Vance Monument, a memorial to Zebulon Vance, governor of North Carolina during the Civil War, was rededicated June 6 after months of renovation. The ceremony utilized many elements of the original dedication ceremony in 1897, including Masonic dedication rites, songs, a poem, and a message from the widow of Sen. Vance.
The 2015 ceremony included the Masonic rites led by N.C. Grandmaster Douglas Caudle; an impassioned speech by the Chairman of the Buncombe County Commissioners, David Gantt, on why we should still honor a Confederate; lovely renditions of ‘America’ and ‘The Old North State’ (North Carolina state song) by the North Buncombe High School chamber Choir; and some great anecdotes about Zeb Vance from Chris Roberts, of the 26th North Carolina Regiment. There were also some of the artifacts from the time capsule that had been placed in the monument in 1897, displayed by archivist Heather South.

Proposed Historic Site Closures
Two mountain historic sites are facing closure. It's part of Governor Pat McCrory's budget plan released Wednesday. It would close five historic sites across the state and eliminate 12 jobs. Two of the sites are located in the mountains, Vance Birthplace in Weaverville and Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort. The state would save just under $500,000 by closing all five sites, part of the proposed $20.6 billion dollar budget. Many in the Old Fort community say if the Mountain Gateway Museum were to close, it would hurt tourism and other businesses in the area. The museum has been open since 1980. The museum administrator says they've been on the chopping block in the past and avoided being shut down. News 13 spoke with employees at the Vance Birthplace who say they pride themselves in being the gateway to Weaverville, and the closure could hurt tourism in the area. It's unknown if the closures will occur, until a final budget is approved.Follow Ingrid Allstaedt on Twitter @IngridNews13

13th Amendment on Display
A rare historical document that changed America forever was on public display in Weaverville.
The North Carolina archives put the original copy of the 13th amendment on display Thursday at the Vance Birthplace. The traveling exhibit is part of the observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The U.S. Congress passed the 13th Amendment in January 1865, abolishing slavery. This is the original resolution that's been locked in a vault at the State Archive ever since.
It's the fulfillment of that promise that all men are created equal and will have an equal opportunity within the government. So this is the first beginning steps to granting citizenship to everyone, says State Archivist Chris Meekins.
This is the first time North Carolina's original copy of the 13th Amendment has ever been on display.

Comparing New & Old
First graders get the opportunity to travel back in time during a field trip to the Vance Birthplace near Weaverville. As part of the state's common core curriculum students must compare old and new, so the historic site is the perfect place to visit.Miss Tammy is showing students how to operate a loom. The children learn that this is how people used to weave carpets and rugs for their homes. They get to see a smokehouse where meat was stored in the winter. The buildings and furnishings on display are representative of the period from 1790 to 1840. There was no electricity, no running water, no cars..not even a Walmart. The Jones Elementary School students learn how people back then used to shuck the corn and store it in a corn cribb so it could be used to feed the livestock during the winter. They get to check out a number of tools in the shed which was something many of the children were interested in, saying they might build their own house one day!
