Vancouver Mysteries l Playing the game
This video is a short one. A lot of the footage I had to take out because we were playing a game and I wasn't allowed to show everything and that would also ruin it for others who might be interested in playing, so here is short video of two groups playing the game, Crime In Downtown. It's around downtown Vancouver so not just in Gastown. Hope you enjoy! :)

MYSTERY ROADTRIP - Vancouver to Whistler British Columbia Road Trip - Sea to sky highway - Canada
Hello! Myself and my wife Melissa have been living in Vancouver, Canada since October! We are on IEC working holiday visas :D
Today we drove up the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) from Vancouver to Nairn falls, stopping at Shannon Falls, Squamish, Whistler, Alice lake and more!
This was such a fun road trip, we decided to do it all in a day which was a pretty long drive but so worth it for these amazing views along the way. We spent most of our time at Nairn falls which is a lovely 3km hike from the car park to an amazing waterfall.
I would recommend hiring a car in Vancouver and doing this drive, its so much fun and there are loads of places to stop along the way! :D
If you don’t know me or this is the first video of mine that you’ve watched then hey! Welcome to my channel! My name is Katie, I moved to Vancouver, Canada on an IEC working holiday visa in October 2018 with my wife Melissa!

A little travel diary of our spontaneous weekend adventure. Some how we wound up snowshoeing on Mt. Seymour in Vancouver, Canada, eating our faces off at Sushi Town. However, our trip was not complete without some warm cinnamon buns from Grounds Coffee.

Canada's Greatest Murder Mystery
The assassination of D'Arcy McGee! Less than a year after Confederation, one of the country's founding fathers was shot dead on Sparks Street in Ottawa, and to this day the question remains: who killed D'Arcy McGee?

A big thank you to those who graciously contributed their voices for some of the quotations in the episode: Leete Stetson (D'Arcy McGee), Hayden Finkelshtain (Patrick J. Whelan), Nikolai Efimov (Patrick Buckley), and Josef Beeby (Messenger).
The story of the assassination of D'Arcy McGee is gigantic. Putting this episode together was daunting because so many details, characters, and events had to be left out. We strongly suggest that interested viewers dive into external sources to come up with their own theories and see the trial from angles we might have only touched on. We tried to find common denominators between the works of multiple historians, in tandem with primary documents, to tell the tale in as succinct (yet open-ended) a way as we could. But bear this in mind: the debate surrounding the trial and who killed McGee rages to this day—there is no definitive accepted truth, just clues, court transcripts, a whole lot of rumours, and a hanged man.
It would be impossible to share everything we came across in our research within this description, so here are a few highlights:
Firstly, it's worth mentioning just how determined McGee was in his campaign against Fenianism. He was a rebel in Ireland, to the point he had a warrant out for his arrest—he escaped to North America on a ship disguised as a priest. In Canada, he became a pioneer of multiculturalism and equality, and he traveled the country passionately sharing his message. Undeterred by the constant real threat of being killed, McGee gave furious speeches in both Catholic and Protestant Irish societies, a lot of the time to enraged crowds. He was fearless, even though he suspected his tenacity might lead to a violent end. McGee apparently had nightmares about his death, and said to a colleague: “There is no danger of my being converted into a political martyr. If ever I were murdered, it would be by some wretch who would shoot me from behind.”
We briefly touch on how strongly the country mourned the loss of their 'Prophet of Confederation,' but it can't be over-emphasized. McGee's funeral was the biggest in Canadian history, our country’s first-ever state funeral, and an official day of public mourning. It took place on what should have been D’Arcy McGee’s 43rd birthday. A crowd of 80,000 lined the streets of Montreal—80% of the city’s entire population—to pay their respects as a black catafalque was driven to St. Patrick's Church. 15,000 mourners followed the body while the band played Handel's “Death March.” McGee had spent most of his time living in Montreal where he was beloved.
Now the elephant in the room: was Whelan a Fenian and did he have a role in the murder? Briefly: most agree Whelan was a Fenian whether or not he admitted to it, but that doesn't make him a killer. What we hoped to accomplish in this episode wasn't to project a verdict on Whelan, but on the trial itself. It's generally accepted that if this trial were to have taken place in modern times, Whelan would have received a 'not guilty' verdict. Clearly, the fact that John A. and Judge Richards worked together to make sure Whelan was convicted and hung quickly is cause for a mistrial, but there's grounds for a 'reasonable doubt' of his guilt in just considering that the entire trial relied on circumstantial evidence given by witnesses who could not be trusted. A quick list of some key points:
- The guards who recounted Whelan's confession in jail may have misinterpreted sarcasm, or worse—as it's been suggested elsewhere—they may have made it up. That confession played a significant role during the trial.
- We weren't joking when we said the reward money for witnesses was problematic. A majority of the witnesses who testified against Whelan didn't come out of the woodwork until the reward was raised, *months* and *months* after the murder.
- Pistols like Whelan's were commonplace in Ottawa at the time.
- Lacroix described Whelan as short and McGee as tall, the reverse was true.
- Whelan appealed his sentence based on the stacked jury, a clear injustice to many at the time.
- A lot of witness testimony was focused on hearsay threats Whelan allegedly made but could be summed up as common grievances hundreds of people had against McGee.
- We've run out of space, we aim to compile our research in a blogpost one day.

10 Unusual Abandoned Places in Canada
From abandoned islands, to obscure hidden places, these are 10 UNUSUAL Abandoned Places in Canada
Subscribe to Talltanic
10. Cole Island
Location - British Columbia
9.Bankhead
Location - Alberta
8.The Guild Inn
Location - Ontario
Locally known as The Guild, this abandoned place was once an impressive hotel in Scarborough Toronto. Since 1914, the property has switched owners many times. It was even used as a Foreign Mission House for the Roman Catholic Church.
What's more impressive than the buildings, is the 90 acres around them. The families that owned the property combined many different architectural styles to create gardens that could rival any property in Europe.
For a long time everything on the property was abandoned, nowadays, the gardens serve as a great spot for intimate weddings, and there have been major talks about reviving the hotel too.
7.Stanley Park Zoo
Location - British Columbia
6.Val Jalbert
Location - Quebec.
My French is not great; so lets just get it out of the way; Val Jalbert is located in Quebec and it is listed as a ghost town. Its easy to see why with photos like this one.
The village sprung to existence because of the successful pulp mill in the area. What is a pulp mill you ask? Its an integral part for the creation of PAPER AND STUFF! You take some wood chips add some magic and then you have FIBERBOARD !
The village was founded in 1901 and by 1929 all the homes in the area were boarded up and everyone was ordered to leave….
In the 1960s the location was transformed into a public park. YAY ! Now everyone can enjoy the nature and check out the homes of the workers that used to work in the mill.
5.Celanese Power House
Location - Alberta
4.Grain Elevators
Location - Alberta
This is not just one site, the countryside of Alberta seems to be littered with dilapidated grain elevators.
Like this one in Herronton, a very small town near Calgary. Or this one in Brant.
Grain elevators commonly refer to buildings that store grain, but they can also refer to what we see in these pictures, towers containing bucket elevators that load up containers with grain.
Locals have tried to preserve as much as they can, and have even started the Alberta Grain Elevator Society !
3.Camp 30
Location - Ontario
2.Partridge Island
Location - New Brunswick
This island has quite a long history, located within the city of Saint John, the island was first used as a quarantine station in 1785. It also had a lighthouse and military post on it.
During the Irish Potato Famine it is estimated that around 30,000 people passed through the island for processing, with around 1200 actually dying there. And by 1890, 78,000 immigrants passed through the island a year. The most famous part of the island is the Celtic cross dedicated to those who passed on the island.
There was a museum near the cross that operated until 1995. Since then, the island has become almost a rite of passage for teenagers in the area. With so much to explore, its easy to see how you can be attracted to the haunting past of the land.
1.Queen of Sidney
Location - British Columbia

Vancouver Mysteries with Tanya Bennett
Did you know that you can train to be a secret agent in Vancouver?
When Vancouver Mysteries invited me to play their secret mission game, I quickly gathered a team of 4 and booked my game!
As a lover of all things mystery I knew I'd be in for a good time. First I got the email - report to secret location and provide activation code.
We headed to a quirky location with a sweet woman. She instructed us on the game and gave us some tips on how to best read the map.
From there, we found ourselves wondering the streets of Vancouver, finding clues, deciphering codes, and using fun gadgets. (watch our instagram stories or highlights for more videos)
Would strongly recommend this game! It's the perfect activity to do with friends, colleagues, or in a team building exercise.
Can YOU beat the 90 minute challenge!

It's the future site of The Post, a development that will house more than one million square feet of office space and more than 185,000 square feet of retail space. It will include two towers, measuring 22 storeys and 21 storeys in height, while maintaining the building's facade.
