Bramwell Tovey, Music Director
It was the mid-1800s, and Beethoven’s towering genius still loomed over the world of music. As composers tried to come to grips with the shadow cast by Beethoven’s works, a conflict emerged — The War of the Romantics had begun. In one corner: Johannes Brahms, Robert/Clara Schumann, and the Leipzig Conservatoire, founded by Mendelssohn. This “conservative” camp viewed Beethoven’s music as the unassailable, unchallengeable peak of music, and their compositions aspired toward this lofty ideal. In the other corner, the avant-garde champions of “modern” music: Wagner and Liszt. These “progressive” composers felt that Beethoven represented a new beginning in music, and that it was their calling to continue to push the boundaries forward from where Beethoven left off.

DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER CANADA - British Columbia (BC) Sightseeing Drive - Jazz BGM
Welcome to Vancouver.
We enter the downtown area via the Cambie Street bridge. Heading up Smithe Street we pass by the Orpheum (1:36), Vancouver's most reputable concert hall and home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. After passing by the law courts (1:59), we take a left and stay on Burrard briefly. There's a a nice church on the right (2:18) before turning left on Nelson street.
At the bottom of Nelson we take a right onto Pacific Boulevard (4:24) where people pay a lot of money to live in trendy condos. The ocean can be seen very briefly (7:45) and eventually we'll hit Denman Street (8:55) which has lots of nice restaurants.
Robson Street (10:16) is downtown Vancouver's most famous street as it has lots of shopping and restaurants. Every tourist has to come her.
We eventually take a left at Hornby and to the right is the Vancouver Art Gallery (12:51). We travel on Georgia for a few blocks and as we take a right on Richards Street you can very briefly see the headquarters of the Vancouver Public Library (13:39) which looks like an ancient Roman building.
Richards Street (13:51) used to have a night-club called Richards on Richards where all the young ladies would try to find the rich boys of Vancouver... it doesn't exist anymore.
We take a right on Davie Street which is Vancouver's LGBT district (14:56). We only travel a few blocks up and then take a right on Granville Street, the clubbing district (15:36)... some of these signs look like they haven't been replaced for years.
We turn right for a block and then take a left on Seymour Street which seems to be turning into the study abroad area. There are lots of students from all over the world (16:25)... (well, mostly Asia...) hanging out around here.
At the bottom of Seymour we hit a T. Waterfront Station (18:35) is right in front of you.
A left is taken and then a right where we can see Canada Place (19:30).
Eventually we go up to Georgia Street (21:25) and head on to the route to Stanley Park or the Lion's Gate Bridge.
The music that you are listening to was performed by Free Jazz Vancouver, a group of improvisers that like to make music from scratch. Mark Quigley (trombone) Chipmunk Page (flute) C Walter Lovell (drums)
