50 year OLD Madurai BOLI STALL and THEPPAKULAM
Puliyadis Boli stall is the oldest stall, which is in Madurai, for more than 50 years. We had three types of boli, I loved the texture of it. They use a good amount of ghee to get that texture. I can feel it when it reached my taste buds. Adhirasam was also good, but the reason we visited this place was to have boli. It was awesome. Very big thumbs up to their boli. Later we went to Theppa Kulam which is one of the famous places in Madurai.

Theppakulam Mariamman - Madurai *
This Mariamman Tank, otherwise colloquially called as 'Maiamman Theppakulam' which is one of the Madurai's antique landmarks, which could have been visited by the tourists definitely. It's situated to the east of the Madurai Meenakshiamman temple within the reach of more or less 6 k.m.
Actually the tank had been created not for the real reason of digging out a huge tank in Madurai. On those days the king 'Thirumalai Nayak' of Madurai wanted to build a huge palace for him. So, for to meet out the purpose of sand and bricks, this place (now the tank situates) had been selected and the sand for the construction of the palace had been dug out from there.
While having done like that, a very huge statue of lord Vinayaga had been unearthed from there. That vinayaga had been consecrated as 'Mukurini vinayakar' in the Meenahshi amman temple, Madurai and hence the digging place became popular and got sanctity
This tank had been fed up with water from the river 'Vaigai', through the pipe lines of ingenious system on those days. Nowadays also this tank is filled up by pumping the water from the river Vaigai continuously for several days through special pipe lines.
On those days, the king Thirumalai Nayak, especially on his birth star of 'Poosam', in the Tamil month of 'Thai' (January-February), he celebrated that day as a grand festival called as 'Thepothsavam', which meant, he took the processional deities of 'Sri Meenakshi and Lord Sundareshwarar' from the temple to Mariamman thepakulam on golden palanquins surrounded by the royal elephants and horses and great mass of people.
After having reached there, the idols of the god and goddess had been taken out from the golden palanquins and had been placed in the mantapam nearby, for the dharshan (for worship) to the people. Then the idols of the gods and the goddess had been put on the decorated raft floated on the tank which had been pulled by two huge ropes, one rope at the center of the tank, in which lord Ganesha temple resided and the other rope at the hands of the people stood at the bank of the tank.
First the people stood on one of the bank began to pull the decorated raft along the water ways surrounded the central mantapam and made it round two or three times. Then the people who had been on the central mantapam began to pull the raft towards the mantapam and the decorated raft reached the central mantapam. Until the evening, the deities would have been there in the mantapam of the lord Vinayaka temple. The devotees in number of several thousands, on that day, plied to the central mantapam in boats till that evening.
As the dusk began to faint, the night grew darker. The central mantapam and the surrounded four mantapams had been lighted with oil lamps (made by sand) and the whole place looked like the heaven, which had been transferred to the earth. Then the idols of Sri Meenakshi and Lord Sundareshwarar had been again brought to the bank by the same decorated raft. After that, the idols were taken to the temple by the golden palanquins.
Nowadays also the same rituals have been taken place, instead for the sand- oil lamps, the whole place have been lighted up with electrical lamps and also fire works have been displayed during night. Now we can see some photo galleries related to Mariamman Thepakulam.
