Vank Historical Church (Cathedral) PART ONE - Isfahan, Iran
Episode 14
This two part video is dedicated to one of the most beautiful and interesting historical monuments in Isfahan city, which is the Vank Historical Church or the Church of Saintly Sisters and its Museum.
In the first part, we visited the Vank Church and its courtyard, and the beauty of the painting on the inner walls of Church. The examples of the famous painting on the walls are The Last Supper, and The Floors of Heaven and Hell. This is without doubt, one of the must see places in Iran, and you should defiantly visit it. Vank historical church was built back during Safavid Dynasty in an Armenian district called Jolfa. I remember reading a piece of news a few years ago, in which this church was elected as the most beautiful church in Middle-East.

Vank Cathedral, Iran
Armenian Apostolic Church of the Saintly Sisters (known as Vank Cathedral) in Isfahan, in the middle of Iran. Video shot on March 8, 2017
Vank Cathedral, Isfahan, Iran.
At the beginning of the 17th century in 1606 during Safavid period, work on the cathedral began. However, in 1655, this Armenian church was rebuilt as the Christian community was rapidly growing in Isfahan.A tilework plaque inscribed in Armenian can be seen by the entrance to the cathedral. Inside is nicely decorated showing a mixture of Islamic and Christian style. Inside the courtyard, there is the belfry and can see the dome of the cathedral which the interior is painted in Persian style with very elegant blue and gold. The walls are painted of European inspirations showing scenes of martyrdom, notably of Saint Gregory. The museum of Armenian culture is the building next to the cathedral. The museum displays 700 handwritten books, the first book printed in Iran, a variety of objects related to Armenian community in Isfahan such as Safavid costumes, tapestries, European paintings brought back by Armenian merchants , embroidery, and other ethnological displays related to Armenian culture and religion. There are several carved stones showing scenes from the Bible outside the museum.

VANK CATHEDRAL ISFAHAN Holy Savior Cathedral (Kelisa-e-Vank) also known as Vank Cathedral and The Church of the Saintly Sisters, is an Armenian Cathedral in Isfahan, Iran. Vank means monastery or convent in the Armenian language. Vank Cathedral was one of the first churches to be established in Isfahan by Armenian deportees settled by Shah Abbas I after the Ottoman War of 1603-1605. Construction is believed to have begun in 1606, and completed with major alterations to design between 1655 and 1664 under the supervision of Archbishop David. The cathedral consists of a domed sanctuary, much like a Persian mosque. The interior is covered with fine paintings and gilded carvings. The courtyard contains a large freestanding belfry towering over the graves of both Orthodox and Protestant Christians. In one corner of the courtyard is a raised area with a memorial to the 1915 Armenian Genocide in Turkey. Across the courtyard and facing the cathedral is a building housing a library and museum.
