Experience India: The Ganga Aarti at Varanasi
Visiting India is an incredible experience all around - from the delicious food, to the incredible art and history, to the unique culture, there’s something for every kind of traveller across this beautiful country. Part of that culture, and a part that no trip would be complete without, lives in Varanasi, and today we’re heading there to take a closer look at it.
Every evening at dusk, something amazing happens in the three holy cities (Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Varanasi). The ritual is called the Ganga Aarti, and it’s not to be missed! An aarti is a ritual which offers fire to the gods, and, in the case of the Ganga Aarti, diyas (handmade clay pots used for rituals such as this and on holy days like Diwali) float down the Ganges River in devotion to the Goddess Ganga.
With the belief that the beautiful lamps on the river take on the power of the Goddess Ganga, devotees cup their hands over the flame and bring their palms to their foreheads, in hope of receiving the Goddess’s blessing.
Every Ganga Aarti ceremony is a sight to behold, but the ceremony in Varanasi is something extra special. A carefully-choreographed routine, the Varanasi Ganga Aarti is performed on stage, by specially-trained young pandits.
It’s a truly special, spiritual thing to witness a Ganga Aarti, but being a part of the ceremony in Varanasi can be just that little bit more magical! If you know you need to see the ceremony in person, why not start planning a spiritual excursion to India for yourself? Head to TourRadar to see this tour’s itinerary, or one of hundreds of others.

Varanasi to Chunar | Action Hero1
Chunar, located in Mirzapur District of Uttar Pradesh state, India, is an ancient town. The railway tracks passing through Chunar railway station leads to major destinations of India, including Howrah, Delhi, Tatanagar, and Varanasi. National Highway number 7 also passes through Chunar. It is connected to Varanasi, the ancient and pilgrimage city also well known as Kashi or Benaras, by roads and rails. Chunar is well known for its pottery work, especially clay toys.
The Chunar Fort was established by Maharaja Vikramaditya, the King of Ujjain, in honour of the stay of his brother Raja Bharthari. It is believed that Raja Bharthari left his body and took Mahasamadhi at this fort, a servant disciple is still taking care of the place and offers deepam dhupam to the Raja every day (as of 8 November 2011).
As per Alha Khand in 1029 AD. King Sahadeo made this fort as his capital and established the statue of Naina Yogini in a cave of Vindhya hill and put the name as Nainagarh. King Sahadeo built a stone umbrella based on 52 pillars in the memory of the victory on 52 other kings, inside the fort which is still preserved. He had a brave daughter who got married with Alha the then King of Mahoba whose marriage place in still preserved with the name of Sonava Mandap. Beside this some other stories are also related with the fort as Magna- Deogarh, Ratan Deo’s Burj (tower) and King Pithaura who named it Patthargarh as well.
In mid-July 1537, Humayun left Agra and arrived at Chunar after 5 months and spent 3 months besieging the Chunar Fort. Humayun later offered Chunar and Jaunpur to Sher Shah Suri in exchange for Bengal
It has got much importance due to the stay of the founder of Mughal Dynasty Babar in 1525 AD. Later on Shershah Suri obtained the possession of the fort by marrying the widow wife of Taj Khan Sarang-Khani, the Governor of Ibrahim Lodi. In 1574 AD. Akbar the great captured this fort and since that very time it was in the Mughal regime up to 1772 AD. Once emperor Jahangir appointed one Iftikhar Khan as Nazim and in the regime of Aurangzeb one of his Governor’s Mirza Bairam built a mosque in 1663 AD. near the Bhairo-Burj.
In 1772 AD this fort was captured by East India Company who established in it a depot of Artillery and ammunition. Later it was taken by Maharaja Chet Singh of Benaras temporarily and after Chet Singh outbreak in 1781 AD. Warren Hastings retired for safety to Chunar where a force was collected by Major Phophan, which expelled Chet Singh from his stronghold in his neighborhood. Hastings liked the situation and climate, his residence is still standing. Near it, there is a sundial bearing the inscription.
Chunargarh of 'Chandrakanta', the famous classic novel by Babu Devakinandan Khatri, is only 40 km from the holy city of Varanasi. The Chunar Fort is situated on an extension of the Vindhyan range of mountains, with the river Ganges flowing near its base. Various exotic waterfalls and religious worship places attract thousands of tourists and locals.
Chunar is very well known for its pottery industries.

Varanasi Flower and Candle Ceremony on the Ganges
A Flower and candle ceremony on a boat on the River Ganges in Varanasi, India.
At 16:45 we meet Anuj in reception as he is going to take usdown to our boats. But Caroline is stuck in traffic and calls the hotel to say she will be late. The rest of us walk down to Assi Ghat along the waters edge and board our boat and wait for Caroline.
Once we leave the shore we float down the river taking photos and videos until it gets dark.
As soon as night falls we light many candles and float them down the Ganges making a wish with everyone. The scene is quite spectacular with a stream of sparking lights and illuminated Ghats in the distance.
We then pull up along side the ceremony we saw the previous night but this time we are viewing it from a different perspective.
I admit I don't know the history behind this but I feel that it is being done purely for the tourists. I know that it is being attended by a whole host of locals who come to prey, but it remind me of Asian villages that you go to when you are on an excursion and they come out to dance for you, this did at one time have some important significance but it is now purely done for tourists.
After the ceremony we disembark the boat and head into town and have some dinner, I go for a plain vegetable fried rice and coke as I am very paranoid about getting ill before our long train ride tomorrow evening to Agra and don't want to be sick as that is the last thing on earth I would want with the toilet facilities on the train.
